WR Treylon Burks, WAS (1 Viewer)

Turron Davenport
#Titans Brian Callahan on Treylon Burks: He is going to play everything, inside/outside. I had him come up and break the group down today. Treylon ran 3,592 yds on Tuesday and hit a top speed of 22 mph in practice.
Callahan was bad at this coachspeak try. He's new. He's trying.
They're not tracking yards ran and nextgen wasn't at practice gauging his mph.
Whether it's to raise trade value or give him confidence to stick or both (as no one knows what the future holds) I imagine it was well intentioned.
Maybe even throw in that his dad and the GM triumvirate and the owner maybe discussed talking this way instead of that way?

We all thought it was super cool how the new coach, assistant coaches, and GM sat and talked for like an hour going over everything and answering every question a couple months ago. It was excellent how the new staff already broke down tons of film and knew strengths and weaknesses and....it was as good a meet n greet presser as there's ever been for a new staff.
No one is forgetting how he said Burks was playing outside. How he mentioned routes he was best at, his size blocking, and how much Callahan thinks the world of guys like Hopkins openly sharing their knowledge of their craft with a young WR. The latter, a direct result of the new coach learning that Burks and Hopkins had been working out this off-season.

No one is forgetting that he didn't say Burks is playing inside. That he was asked later if Burks would play inside and instead he listed most WRs except Burks.

Is it possible they had a change of heart? Absolutely.
Is the coach welcome to move anyone around without running the idea past the fans and press? Absolutely

For rookie mini camp, teams get a lot of players (that lean towards not making the team) onto the field. They do often have to play out of position because they simply don't have enough at this spot or that spot. That's totally regular. It's also mostly here's our plays and here's our techniques.
Established Veterans do NOT attend rookie mini camp and if they do, they don't do a darn thing to risk injury. "I wanna make the team, coach" veterans do attend rookie minicamp.

Further, the Titans can practice earlier as every team with a new coach does. I forget the rules but the NFLPA was all over this extra practice time as only being educational and also not risking injury.

Bottom-line-
I like that he's bad at coachspeak. Treylon attending is awful for trade value. I've said it many times- Treylon is an excellent practice player and we know he has elite bod/talent. It's good for him (sticking) to have shown that to the new staff. There doesn't seem to be injury concern w Treylon

There IS a good misquoted quote that idk what the original is because reporters argued and whose ear is correct? but the gist of it is- Treylon was told to stop running away from contact so much and run over CBs the way he did in college.
I like that.
Sometimes some players need to be told some variation of "toughen up" after overcoming an injury. Possibly got "be yourself" vibe to it too and...I like it

I hope that works as well as Derrick Henry getting a talkin to from Eddie George some years back... but I know it's not likely. I'm still holding and probably going down with the ship at this point.

Yeah me too. And the Titans instilled Henry's college fullback then too. It was obvious he was barking at Henry during games and jumping on him all happily too. Lewan said to Henry that the FB instilled a meanness and Henry laughed and said he was reminded of a skill. Not to minimize Eddie's advice...I like the anecdote and think removing the FB is one of the dumbest things in NFL history so I jump at the chance to mention one

Burks has been miscast by the Titans in my eyes. He's a big slot, its what he always was, but for whatever reason they kinda tried to use him as if he were a 1-1 for AJ Brown.

I'm kinda down on the Boyd signing. I think between Burks/Phillips they had more upside in the slot than Boyd offers. But I get that he's more consistent and developing Levis is priority #1.

It doesn't seem they'll trade him anymore. Probably just slow time guess.

Callahan sounds convincing about him having a somewhat significant role and if he succeeds then he'll get more.
I'd expect him to sub for Nuk and then hopefully by the end of camp he can sub at all three spots. The age and injury projections for the starters could make some decent time available.
I think the KR stuff is very real and he could be an intriguing returner.
Back with the age- if he does show out this year then yeah there's one eventual replacement for the three.

NWI will steal this from him if he doesn't have his usual very good camp.

The Titans have a good amount of spunky fiery get r done scrubs at WR. It's no prob to replace Treylon for a few plays. They've got two TEs they like that may be better in the slot than in line. Did I mention the scatbacks? It's totally easy to set Treylon up for success and move on if he doesn't reach it

Calvin Ridley called Burks a stud and a freak- a dude that big and that fast- then he said he's like Julio and AJB. He thinks it's a matter of time before Burks succeeds.

I didn't expect the positivity to be THAT strong but I did expect it and said so earlier. He's always been great in off-season/camp. It's rough for Treylon but nothing will matter til he does it and stays healthy in regular season games

Smells like a bust
Right now yes. No doubt he has had a tough start to the NFL. First year health issues (in camp - asthma etc.) he needed to sort out and then he was plagued by injuries over the past 2 years. It has not gone well.

He is unlikely to live up to his first round hype but if this guy can figure out his health and land on a team that could use him for his strengths I think he could produce as a WR2 or 3. Someone you could slot in as a flex play.

But he has to get his health and injury stuff sorted out first. Long road ahead. Hope he can figure it out - he's still young.

(I've been saying this for months btw)

He was a gunner yesterday and supposedly awesome at it. On the radio, they said he got yelled at for contact and pulled because ya can't do that in minicamp.
Good! That's what we want. Treylon fired up. Bring it out of him, coach!

It's not like we ever wanted to discuss it but yeah good luck blocking his freakish bod. I wanna read of him returning kicks next. Good luck stopping that too.

I don't care what they have him do; He had this rugged tough style like Deebo or TO in college and whatever stirs the pot here to get him fired up, I'm all for it.

People on X "You can't have a first round pick as a gunner."
I don't care if he punts! Whatever fires him up, I'm in favor of

He got a good sorta mad when the offense was struggling all day to beat press coverage. (Remember the Titans have top CBs now by free agency) Everyone getting frustrated on offense and he stood out as the one eventually fighting thru and getting free. Made a fine (overreactions were it was great, it was regular) TD catch in traffic.

Again- bringing out the rugged toughness in him that hasn't been there in the NFL
Again- he has always been a practice darling, rocks every summer.

I'll take the mindset play style adjustment as good news again. No pads so he'll have to get tough again when pads come.

One drill video was OMG. He was absolutely awful on a double move. Like dude this is the NFL what are you doing type bad. Others go, his turn again... absolutely beautiful footwork like Julio or some blessed athlete, humans don't turn that gracefully, OMG it was great. No one visibly talked to him all his own adjustments.

Idk if he's maturing and calling himself out? Gotta learn to go from tough to graceful and keep head under control? I just don't know.

Struggle then thrive, struggle then thrive...can't ask for more.

"Treylon Burks looked to be in really good shape... Burks looked smooth catching the football away from his body on Wednesday, using his big hands in open space. But Burks was upset with himself after he slipped on one rep, which ended a potential big play early."

#Titans HC Brian Callahan said he’s pleased with WR Treylon Burks training camp so far

“Nothing changes for him, there’s nothing more we need him to do than what he’s doing”

Hurt hammy
Waiting for more of an update but then again...ya know what we'll hear
Turron noted he could not put pressure on his left leg.
Practice ended and Callahan said no injuries of note. Burks just had cramps.

Possibly very lucky here.
Cramps can mimic anything. It wouldn't be surprising if any cramped players sat tomorrow but hoping that'll indicate some news here too.

Burks made two great catches today and looked good in drills according to everyone including Hawks reporters

Burks went down late in practice. Some thought he hurt his back. He got up stretching and walking it off but went inside anyway

He's got a drop each week and the coach has spoken about getting NWI and Jahquan more involved.
The WR coach said he grades out the best of any Titans WR when they review film and there couldn't be a more unbelievable statement.
The shared videos on X show him taking a lifetime to finish his route and often not before the pass is thrown to someone else he he wasn't an option because he took too long.

He has flashed elite deep speed but dropped two or three when doing so.

He needs a fresh start somewhere.

Callahan was asked of concern of losing players on the PS and he said that's part of the game and used (WR) Oliver as an example of someone they'd be upset to lose.

Ignoring the WR coach quote, I think they're setting up for his release.

Bottomline- he's got a ton of snaps in this three WE offense and almost zero production

Burks hurt his knee in practice yesterday and is expected to go on IR.

An injured player can not be traded so..he won't be traded for a pittance new start type.

Staff still says he is doing very well and every fan is like umm what?

Contract is 4 mil next year and fifth year option coming. I can't believe that. Can u imagine even discussing that?

I think Tennessee is partially at fault for not developing Burks to improve his skillset. I see a lot of clear out routes run using him as a traditional receiver, mostly like a decoy would do. I don't think they've ever trusted him. He's not fast and to say his route running is suspect is an understatement, but the Titans haven't figured out how to use his size of 6'2" 225 lbs. Maybe they should watch more of his tape at Arkansas. At the end of the day we can say Burks has warts, but I don't think the Titans have helped his development one bit.

This seems to be a general problem as of late for WRs and even TEs. A team drafts a player and then puts them in a different role than what they did well in college. Then they wonder why it isn't working. Did they miss on their main target and then just draft the next guy up but that guy isn't a good fit for their team?

A good example is QJ. The chargers used him in all sorts of wrong ways last year. Didn't put him in a position to win. This year the new coaches started using him in better situations and he scored 3 TDs early in the season. Unfortunately he got hurt but a change of how he was being used was very helpful.

Not saying Burks will be good in the NFL but you are correct in that they were using him in a lot of clear out and deep routes.
