Wu-Tang Clan Releases New Album -- Will Sell Only ONE Copy (1 Viewer)

when was the last time the Wu put out a good album though?

I had all their albums and subgroup albums at one point... but now I'd probably listen to about 30 seconds of each song and find 1 or 2 I'd like to hear again.

Are we counting solo projects? OB4CL 2 was awesome. Inspectah Deck & 7L & Esoteric was good but not sure that counts

Brilliant marketing plan being that they have a new album dropping this summer which you can buy via traditional outlets. Wu Tang still ain't nothin to f wit.

Strange but interesting. Biggest thing for me is I have no faith in Wu's ability to put together a good LP these days, much less a double LP.

If my favorite band gave me the option of paying millions for the single copy of their new album, or pay an admission fee to listen once on headphones, they wouldn't be my favorite band anymore.
Who says theyre doing the bolded?
the article

According to RZA and the album’s main producer Tarik “Cilvaringz” Azzougarh, a Morocco-based part of Wu-Tang’s extended family, the plan is to first take Once Upon A Time In Shaolin on a “tour” through museums, galleries, festivals and the like. Just like a high-profile exhibit at a major institution, there will be a cost to attend, likely in the $30-$50 range.
I'm not a Wu fan so I don't know, but is the average Wu fan going to be going to museums and art galleries? Even for a chance to hear a favorite band as an exhibit?

The average Wu fan is probably 35-40 so I definitely don't think it is out of the question.

I'd do it if it was a whole "experience". If it is just sit/stand there and listen to the album, then no I wouldn't.

Most wu-tang fans have probably out grown them. I loved them back when I was in college but I can't really listen to method man talking about sticking flaming coat hangers in guys asses with the kids in the car.

Sure. All adults have 'out-grown' pretty much all rap in your scenario. That doesn't mean they don't still love the music. I definitely wouldn't take my kids to this 'exhibit' but I'd get a sitter and go with friends.

ETA: Have you also 'out-grown' violent movies, movies/TV with bad language and porn?

 at people thinking its outlandish to pay $20 to listen to this album - if - you couldnt hear by other interwebbing means. How much do you pay to see a concert? A lot more than $20, and thats also the only time you can have that experience.

I remember having to pay $16.99 for a CD at NRM or Borders and Im younger than most of you old ####s

If that was my only chance, and it was good, yeah, Id say its worth $20

Is exclusivity versus mass replication really the 50 million dollar difference between a microphone and a paintbrush?

Umm....yes?

I appreciate that value of this as a marketing ploy, but the entire notion is rather silly.

Nothing wrong with that. Hell, what's the point of having a bunch of money and fame, if not for the ability to say silly things and have people take it seriously?

It shouldn't need to be said, but there's a difference between an item's worth as value as a collector or historical item and the value of the art for the sake of it's own enjoyment/consumption.

Artificially rendering a work of music "rare" is in no way similar to an original painting having a high value.

It's rather silly to question whether people place enough esteem on music as an art form because the collector value of the original recording isn't quite high enough.

The opposite is true really. People love music as an art form. They show it by wanting to listen to it over and over.

One person paying a lot of money for a collector piece demonstrates nothing about how highly the public reveres that form of art.

There is a collector market for music, but unlike other art forms, the collector market doesn't define the market. People generally prefer to consume music, not collect artifacts. That's high praise.

BTW, I'd pay a lot of money to see Wu-Tang sit down with Vincent Van Gogh and explain this concept.

Wu-Tang: Yo, Van Gogh, we're sick and tired of the way nobody appreciates fine music the way they do your fine paintin's. It's hard being a musician these days. We want to be more like you.....

VG: I know dying broke helps [hardy laughter]....but seriously, what's the problem?

WT: See, we hear you sold a painting for $50 million....

VG: Again, I was dead for almost a century you ####### #######.....

WT: Right, but see nobody ever wants to pay a bunch for our original recordings because we sell copies of it to millions and millions of people.....

VG: Wait, millions of people exchange currency for a copy of your album? And you guys are still alive?

WT: Right...but nobody seems to appreciate our art from...

VG: You guys are morons....pass me that vaporizer thingy and go #### yourselves.......
