WWYD - Parking Situation (1 Viewer)

How does anyone park across a driveway without knowing it?
You think that would be tough to do, right? That there were spots nearby and she was an older person it was dark out I get a mistake.

One night in my 20s, I drove in from Marin to visit a friend in SF. Spent over an hour driving around the neighborhood trying to find a spot.. bupkis. Until... Wala! Gold. Pulled in and hoofed it to my friends. Got back there a couple hours later and found a note glued to my windshield. I had parked in an obvious driveway that after that all time driving around in circles ultimately ended up looking just right. I wrote back on their note a profuse apology and stuck it in their mailbox.

So I can empathize with the "old" 55 year old woman.

Right that’s why I felt bad for the lady.

Because she was so elderly and decrepit, at 55?

How does anyone park across a driveway without knowing it?

I have a follow up question. It's super-popular in my area to do garage conversions. Take a garage, fill in the door, add hvac, and now you have another bedroom or living room or other livable floorspace and added square footage to your home.

The driveway is then sodded over but the city doesn't fill in the curb so there's still the divot dipping down where the driveway used to be. Sometimes, just the part of the driveway on the apron from the street to the sidewalk remains.

My follow up question is, is it still illegal to park blocking a non-existent or unused driveway? Doesn't seem like it should be, but, I never see people doing it. People still respect that cut-out in the curb.

Kind of hard to tell sometimes I guess or people see the curb stop and just respect it.

I'm 50. Played tennis last night with a guy who I have known for a few years. Thought for sure he was 65+. He mentioned last night that he is the oldest guy on his USTA league team. I was all like, "yea, you are old as ****, of course you are the oldest". Turns out he is "only" 54.

Ask him what he would expect if he parked in someone’s driveway by accident

So…I am getting ready to leave when this tow truck situation begins. I’m in the shower and the wife says there’s a tow truck here. Like a minute later she’s saying the driver is there now.

It’s a woman who owns the car and she is reacting how you would expect. Not looking too happy.

I don’t want this person to get towed so make the decision to go outside and see if I can smooth things out 😂

The woman immediately apologizes, I get the whole story, was dark, was distracted…I totally get it.

Then the waterworks start.
**** that. If you live in any type of urban setting which it sounds like you might in Seattle. You just don't do this. You can't block someone's driveway. she deserves everything she gets. No mercy. Having lived in bigger cities for most of my life. You drive around until you find a spot. That's the deal. If you can't navigate this then get the **** out of the city!!!!!

100% it’s that it was an accident and I got the firsthand witnessing of the person crying and the like. There was some guilt factor there.

I agree with this 100% but also agree that had I been there with the person crying and all, I'd probably be more understanding.

This was completely it. I mean the car needed to be moved. I have no idea how long it would be there for. Still blows my mind they got there this fast.

Honestly the person who got the short end of this stick is the tow truck driver.

Yeah that poor guy apparently got hosed from a tow fee because he did his job too well.

Laws vary depending on jurisdiction but I could still see a good reason for this to be illegal as emergency vehicles likely need a way to access the property.

i would guess that is correct i mean you have to have a way to get into a burning structure and fire planning usually involves ensuring that a building is accessible to fire department personnel and vehicle and that emergency evacuation routes are clear and includes setting access road widths and turning radius requirements which is one more reason people parking in front of driveways should be launched into the sun in bee filled rockets and mean bees like yellow jackets who just stink take that to the bank brochachos

Yeah I grew up in a house with a fire hydrant in front. We knew from an early age not to park there and were always happy when a nunbnut got a ticket for doing so.

We live in a populous city with a driveway and people park/block it. It is curbed with a see-through gate and a visible vehicle.

You'd think people wherever they are from would know that blocking a strangers driveway usually doesn't end up well for them so why risk getting your car towed and a ticket?

If we see that we are blocked, we usually open the gate, drive up partially through the gate onto the sidewalk, and then honk the horn a few times. We are pretty gracious and try to squeeze by but it is really annoying when we need to get out ASAP and we are blocked.
