xbox one vs ps4 (2 Viewers)

been reading a ton about both of these consoles and some people in this thread are spinning things to fit their narrative. Both consoles will not support DNLA or MP3. sony want people to use their music player app and MS wants people to use thier music player app.

For those stating Xbox optimization will improve, that is true but dont forget PS4 is also going to get better so its not like only 1 of the 2 will improve.

Its way to early to call one or the other a winner. I have more to say but work beckons I'll add more in a bit.
Link to Xbox One not supporting MP3 or DLNA?
Quickest most up to date link I could find

http://penny-arcade.com/report/article/yes-the-xbox-one-can-play-cds-and-will-support-dlna-streaming

http://www.polygon.com/2013/11/1/5056280/xbox-one-supports-dlna-compatibility-audio-cd-playback-microsoft

So its only half true today. no MP3's but it does stream DLNA. It is not a media extender like the 360 was off of your computer.

So it doesn't seem like there is going to be a way to simply import your music files, but you will be able to stream the content you already own,

----------------------------------------------------------

While Xbox One supports audio CD playback, it does not support CD ripping, a spokesperson said, a feature of the Xbox 360. It also doesn't support MP3 or AAC playback from devices like the iPod, iPhone, Zune or Windows Phone over USB.
Why does this matter when it fully supports Play To? I have streamed AVCHD via Play To so I don't get the need for an outdated feature.

I'm going from Xbox360 to PS4 because of one big reason, and that's backward compatability, or more specficially the lack thereof.

I have a ton of games that I bought on Live Arcade. These games will not port to XBox One.
Could you please provide a link confirming this?

I've spent hundreds of dollars on Live Arcade, and can't believe I won't be able to continue to play these games if I purchase an Xbox One.
not sure if they changed their minds or not, but here is one link.

Neither console features any kind of backwards compatibility, at least for now. This isn't anything nefarious on the part of either manufacturer. The Xbox One does not have the same architecture as the 360 did. Same for PS3 --> PS4. Current gen games would require a port to be able to run on next gen consoles.
I guess when I was thinking about backwards compatibility, I was thinking about game discs.

I wasn't thinking about games I purchased ONLINE and played ONLINE.

M$N can bite me. Do I have to repurchase Dig Dug now?
yes, which makes choosing the ps4 such an easy decision for me.

No.

The thing is, though many people at console launches scream from the hilltops that they want BC, very few actually use it. So few that both MS and Sony are IMO unlikely to offer it at all. Case in point - early launch PS3s were BC with some PS2 games. But Sony found that very few people used it. So they removed BC with subsequent PS3 builds. Sony owns Gakkai which is a game streaming service of some sort. Perhaps that could be leveraged for BC - but I don't know if they'd bother putting in the effort. Microsoft's Azure can do the same - as proven recently where they ran Halo 4 off of some smartphones. Which is cool, but when people move onto the next generation, not many are interested in running PS3 or 360 games.

This same redonkulous argument happened last time. If you want to play your old games play them on your old system!

I'm not buying either system because I can't play River Raid!!!!!! Waaaaaaa!!!!!!

I don't really get why there isn't BC this time. All the upgrades are just moare bigger cpu and ram and crap.

They said that a built in emulator hogs memory. I found this strange, but whatever.

I'm thinking more people would be interested in backward compatability this time because the leap between consoles as far as graphics just isn't that huge. But, this is the way that they are going, and that's fine. I'll just buy stuff I couldn't get before. I'll finally be able to get my daughter a copy of Little Big Planet. She's wanted that game for years, and it will be on the cheap, too!

The PS4 isn't backwards compatible either. You'll need a PS3 to play LBP. Either that or wait until the next installment comes out for the new console.

Yes that's true. But then I can buy content that I never had access to, and I figure Little Big Planet will be one that they "upgrade" pretty early. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Using Gaikai integration, older Playstation titles will be available for the PS4. It's not true backwards compatibility, but it's close enough.

I think people are underestimating this. These next systems are going to be photo realistic by year 3 or 4. You're comparing the highly tuned graphics of this generation to the vast untapped power of the new systems.

You want a comparison go play GUN, then put in Red Dead.

oh sure, I agree with that, but it's going to take a while to get there. in the meantime, people who sell their 360s to get more money for the xbones might miss their old arcade games, and lament the fact that they have to pay for it again.

I won't be selling or trading in mine. In fact I won't be buying any console on launch. I waited a while to get my 360 and was well served by doing so.

I'll pick a next gen system probably around this time next year. For now, I just picked up a PS3 dirt cheap and plan on enjoying all the PS3 exclusives I've missed out on.

First up: Last of Us.

Just finished it. Really good game.

Uncharted 2 is still better, IMO. I'd play all the Uncharted's if I were you.

Is sony sticking with that same controller design? I really prefer the microsoft controller.
Basically, yeah. They made a few tweaks, but it looks like essentially the same controller.
I've always hated the PS controllers. Every time I pick one up I feel like I'm part of some long term arthritis study. XB controllers just fit more naturally in the hands and the analog sticks especially are much more ergonomically placed.

Agreed. Especially for racers. The Sony triggers are atrocious.

They fixed those, right? Gave them more bounce and made them concave like the xbox controller? Thought I read the PS4 controller was a big upgrade.

heard the same about the trigger controls on the Dualshock4

Still too many QTE's for most serious gamers. It would have to be a truly beautiful, deep cinematic-type experience to be a good game given that. And I don't think it will live up to that level.

Expectations for this first wave of next gen games are too high. Especially launch titles.

Remember what Perfect Dark Zero looked like after all the hype last gen, as a launch title? And then a year or two later, Oblivion came out and pretty much changed graphical expectations? And then that was just the tip of the iceberg. It takes a couple years to truly harness the power of a new console, although apparently these are much easier to work with, so maybe it will happen faster.

I am reposting it in here to ask the PS4 authorities as to whether the PS4 has anything available like this? This is a potential system seller for me.
I don't want to come off as a XBOX fanboy which I admit to being for this last generation, but I just can't imagine Sony will be able to top that. I HOPE THEY DO, but given their history and xbox's lead in this area, I just cant fathom it.

they already did, you can play all their games in 1080p, the same isnt true for xbox. game over.

Yeah, because that's exactly the same issue. And since several million people have already pre-ordered both consoles, I'm thinking the game has just begun.

Oh, and you might want to check the native resolution on Battlefield 4 for PS4....(hint...it's not 1080p)

I'm pretty sure the PS4 won't be doing the seamless tv-to-games-and-back thing that the Xbox has going. I mentioned in the other thread that I'm not the target customer for that, but it is pretty slick.

I already have a PS4 ordered, but I know I will pick the Xbox up in time.

I guess I am really disappointed in the release titles for the PS4. I am really wondering what the game will be for my kids in this mess.

I am buying Disney Infinity for my 9 year old daughter for the Xbox, so I am hoping that will keep her interested in something.

Those of you lamenting the BC, just buy one of the HDMI switches and keep all your stuff hooked up.

I'm still holding out hope about backward compatibility for both. Gakkai and Azure can do it. It's just if Sony and MS want it to happen. At the very least, they both should allow BC for digital titles purchased on XBL and PSN. I don't have a lot by any means, but yeah I've spent some coin on both PS3 and 360 digital titles.

The business of consoles seems to be so huge. Having two monsters compete is important. If it wasn't for MS the ps4 I'm buying wouldn't be as good. How could any other company jump in now and compete. IF Sony or MS failed would the industry survive?

Minot trying to ignite the flame wars between conic and sony but find it funny that people bring up that Microsoft has lose money or broke even yet everything so have read about Sony is that they have had something like 7 years of billion dollar loses.

I'd like to see Valve get involved in hardware.

Wow. People have written Nintendo off way too quickly. It seems people have forgotten that they owned the market last gen and still dominate the market in handheld sales.

They made a lot of money and set gaming back 10 years. Nobody takes them seriously.

That and for as well as they did last generation monetarily, they BOMBED with the WiiU.

I don't really get why there isn't BC this time. All the upgrades are just moare bigger cpu and ram and crap.
But they're completely different architectures.

The only reason console games are able to look as good as they are with as underpowered as the systems are (try running Mass Effect 3 on a PC with 512mb ram and let me know how it goes) is because the games are coded specifically for the architecture of those consoles. It's a major advantage consoles have over PCs. When they develop a game they know exactly what system everyone is going to be playing it on. That's why they're able to do so much more with so much less.

Both Sony and MS switched to the x86 architecture this gen, so that eliminates that advantage on backwards compatible games. That means the only option for true BC (not cloud streamed) is to either put 360/PS3 hardware inside the new systems (which would raise the price of each by about $100, make them physically larger, and add additional heat) or try and emulate 360/PS3 games. Neither the PS4 or XB1 are nearly powerful enough to emulate 360/PS3 games. Even high end PCs can't do that yet.

Fixed your post. They brought gaming back to the forefront for the first time since the original NES. If you want to blame anyone for setting gaming back 10 years, blame smartphones.

That said, I agree with you to a point... The Wii U should've been a straight gaming system without the tablet gimmick. I have to admit that it was the only new system that really had me psyched to try it out. Unfortunately, when I got a hold of it, the controller was cheap plastic and the touch controls don't seem to work like we had hoped. Nintendo has a chance to still turn it around, but you do have to question whether they want to. They would need to package the Wii U pro controller with every unit.

Sadly, I do agree that Nintendo is a 4 trick pony and seem to be the only ones that know how to make quality games for their unit. And we've yet to see a true next-gen Nintendo game for the Wii U. New Super Mario Bros. U doesn't count as a new Mario game and an HD-remake to Wind Waker doesn't count as a new Zelda. And that leaves Pikmin 3 as the only true next-gen title from Nintendo, but many people aren't even aware of Pikmin, nor is it a system seller.

However, Nintendo isn't going away. The failure of the WiiU won't stop them. They aren't Sega.

Nintendo wasn't really in the same market as Sony or Microsoft last gen. They were going after a different set of consumers.

I've never successfully emulated a PS2 or original XBox yet. I'm surprised we aren't there yet. It's close, but it's not very good and still unplayable. However, I've been able to emulate a Playstation 1 since 2000. I can also emulate a Wii/Gamecube using Dolphin software very well. And there's also a decent Dreamcast emulator.

That doesn't take away that they successfully make video game consoles and have done so now for 5 generations. The early WiiU failure isn't the end by a longshot. If you think so, you haven't been paying attention to what Nintendo does.
