I want to like pit bulls... I really do. But just read the reports of the attacks you linked to involving german shepards and compare them to the pit bull attack in Ohio. There's no comparison. It seems like other breeds will bite but pits attack and just won't stop. There's a big difference there.

We were debating this very subject at work today. Someone brought up an attack that happened where a young child had wandered away from it's parent(s), crossed the street/road/bike path and an "invisible fence" into the neighbor's yard and was killed by one or more "pit bulls". I caught holy hell for suggested that the dog owners had a responsibility to have their potentially deadly pets in a proper enclosure.It is a fact that pit bulls, rotts, and similar dogs are involved in more fatal maulings than any of the other breeds. Why is it unreasonable to expect these animal's owners to properly control their pets? Granted the parent(s) of this child share a big part of the fault here but kids will get away from you quick. If the dogs had been properly secured this probably doesn't happen (in my opinion).

The dogs were properly secured, the child wasn't.

Is it standard to get permission to pump a couple shots into a dog that isn't being aggressive towards everyone in it's area (causing mass hysteria).

Should we kill all of that species as well because of a few million bad apples?

Your definition of "properly secured" appears to differ from mine. We aren't talking about a poodle here. Invisible fences fail from the dogs side sometimes, too. What if your neighbor had a mountain lion contained by an "invisible fence."

 
What is it about this subject that makes relatively smart people say really stupid things?! If anything, it's been an entertaining thread, but there's a lot of stupid going on in here.

 
With all of these recent postings portraying pit bulls as loving creatures, I've changed my mind and would like to adopt. Said no one ever.

About 19 people a year are killed by alleged pit bull attacks.

About 800 people are accidentally killed by guns (and thousands more due to gun violence) every year.

I point this out because I want to know from the "kill all pit bulls" crowd if their stance is on preventing potentially avoidable deaths and making society safer or merely based upon their own personal fears?

I for one have never stated that all pit bulls should be killed. My position has always been about wise choices as a dog owner. Of course not all pits will go off. Perhaps it's even a very small minority of all pits. But- unlike most other dogs- if a pit does attack for whatever reason, the results are far more severe. THAT part of a pit is apparently not always a result of bad "parenting."

I will never own a dog thaat I can't "take." And anyone leaving pit bulls in a yard restrained only by an invisible fence is playing roulette with their neighbors welfare.

IMHO of course...

Makes about as much sense as killing all pit bulls because of a few bad ones. Percentage of bad humans is likely higher, IMO.
