When do you guys listen to podcasts? I listen to music if I'm doing cardio. I guess if you commute as a passenger to work maybe?
I am constantly listening to something, music or podcast. I'll listen while doing chores around the house, while driving without the wife or kid, while I play a game like Madden, sometimes listen to a podcast instead of reading before bed, etc, etc....
I could do the chores thing or before bed. Couldn't play a video game and listen. At least not and understand it. I could do the drive thing but usually I am blasting music or else there are people in the car to converse with. My commute is like 10 minutes.

You could really get through a lot of stuff if you listened at work. Would need long periods of desk-time, right?

90 minutes with Amy Poehler? Very
Keep reading the list...
I sometimes think I have a mild form of Tourette's Syndrome because there are certain things that I must do in a very specific way or it eats into the back of my mind like maggots on 5 day old beef. In this case I absolutely must listen to the most recent one first and only if it captures my imagination will I explore the greater catalog. I also swear enough to make a teamster blush. Yeah, I know it's kinda weird. But don't worry, it's second in my queue and scheduled to be listened to on my Thursday walk home from the office.
As someone afflicted with mild OCD, I sympathize.
47 minutes in to the podcast and still waiting for the funny. So far it's just him and Poehler chatting about the past and referring to people who are apparently famous today but I don't know who they're talking about because they only use first names. If it's going to be an interview show I would like the interviewer to set up the audience a little better so we know what the hell the interview is about.Maybe I chose the wrong episode but so far this won't make my rotation.
Maybe it's about expectations? It's not always laugh out loud funny, but I expect the show to be smart - and it always delivers.
:goodposting: If you are listening to WTF and expect to be laughing the whole time, you are going to be disappointed. WTF is more about exploring the behind-the-scenes world of comedy and getting the subjects to open up about where they come from, how they got to where they are and why they do what they do. In fact, I think his best interview happened in the second half of the Todd Hanson interview and there was absolutely nothing funny about it (quite the contrary, actually).Greg Fitzsimmons' podcast is good for some laughs if that's what you are looking for.

That wasn't my expectation at all. I was hoping for good interviews but in the one episode I have listened to it felt like I walked into the middle of a private conversation and I had no idea where it started. Maron and Poehler (the one I listened to) used nothing but first names in reference to any person they were speaking about which is fine but it doesn't do much good when the interviewer doesn't at least let the audience know who is being spoken about. It's fine and dandy when they are referring to "Lorne" but when they are talking about how "Jim" was such a big influence for such-and-such it removes the audience from the equation.I was looking for the Louis CK interview (episodes 111 & 112) per jdoggs recommendation but they require the premium membership (or something). Maybe I'll try the Dimitri Martin one.

Yes. Exactly. And I feel like WTF's window into the human condition endlessly fascinating.

:hifive:The wife and I just paid a measly $8 for access to all the early episodes. Looking forward to listening. Unfortunately, they aren't MP3s and can only be listened to with an iPhone app or on-line. Still, $8 for all that content is cheap.

Try the Jimmy Fallon or Conan O'Brien ones. Still not a lot of LOL moments but they are still good.
i really liked the bobcat goldthwait one. listening to some of his stories had me nearly in tears from laughing so hard.
The weirdest one so far was Gallagher. On one hand, he's a low-self monitoring jerk with no clue. On the other hand, he seems intelligent.
Yeah, he is a smart guy. He just seems to have filled his head with the wrong ideas.

Yep, that was a good one. I'll add Garry Shandling, Adam Carolla, Dave Foley and Andy **** to the list of possible ones for Chaka to check out.
shandling was good. foley was weirdly gripping. dude's life is pretty much in the ####ter.

I agree that he's a crazy, condescending racist but you can be all that and be smart too.

i'm a tremendous KiTH fan (kevin is probably my favorite) and it was just awful to listen to him. i felt so much for his situation. he seemed like he was making peace with it somehow though, which i found interesting.

You know, the more I learn about high-functioning autism and asberger's syndrome from Mrs. Dogg, the more I can spot it. Gallagher isn't dumb, he's socially inept. Like, he mentions Letterman and Leno and says that he should have a show like that. The guy is completely clueless, but I wouldn't say he's dumb. And the racist part? I don't think so. Good, sane comedians like Louis CK or Chris Rock interject race into their humor, but it's always treated with a nice, smart touch. But Gallagher doesn't seem to understand the difference between a stupid joke and a smart joke.

I agree about the asbergers socially inept. He probably is smart and just awkward. The racist part is based of the stories I hear however on O&A from other comics, Patrice O Neil most recently and other white comics is he's a racist. Has nothing to do with his act more behind the scenes. But their running joke is of course WTF you think he uses a watermelon.Of course this is based off of only what I've heard recently. I have no proof other than it's alleged by others on the radio, that he also coined the phrase niglet that Patrice uses all the time.

Just applies to playing Madden. Never have the sound on for that anyway, so I am able to listen to a podcast. Don't do it while I play Fallout or anything like that.

The wife tutors people with physical and mental disabilities. One of her students is very bright, and he also has asberger's. He said something like, "I can say, 'I don't like black people.' It's a free country." Well, there's an example of someone understanding free speech without any ability to put that in the context of social interaction. Gallagher uses a watermelon in his act - perhaps because he thinks he's lampooning stereotypes. But it's just so dumb and obvious, it just comes across as racism.

I'll preface this by saying I haven't seen Gallagher's act since I was a kid, but is it not possible that he uses a watermelon simply because of the mess it makes when you smash it with a sledgehammer?

one doesn't go a gallagher show for the sly wit, subtle exploration of life's little ironies, and observational humor.

Check out Episode 144 - Patton Oswalt.
Listened to the first 45 minutes on my walk to work this morning. Much better stuff. I can't see listening to this for three hours/week but I can see digging into some interviews with people I find interesting. I might go with the David Foley one next.

listening to WTF/Maron a lot right now. i finished his interview with laura kightlinger, who i always thought of as a little under-rated as a comic. starting on demetri martin now. meh, so far. i had to cut off the richard lewis one because it was just plan awful.

Below is the list from my Listen folder (use Google Listen on Android to manage, I really should look at some of the alternatives.) I get about 20-30 min in the car 2-3 times a day to listen to podcasts, so there is no way I stay current with all of the below. Some I often skip almost immediately if I don't care for the topic. Good thing about having more podcasts than time is that there is always something interesting to listen to on my phone. The list needs a bit of a pruning, but for the most part, I listen to whatever comes on from the list below. My podcasts lean heavily towards Tech/web development and Startup/Success/Marketing. I've been looking for a few good podcasts relating to personal development, but nothing that has really stuck lately.

With all the guys on here that go to WWTDD I was wondering if anyone has checked out the sister site Filmdrunk. The have a pretty good podcast. Its pretty much 4 guys sitting around drinking and discussing films and other news of the world plus they will have guests sometimes. Its NSFW (language) but has had me in tears a few times.

Granted, I'm a pretty big fan of Maron's style so maybe I like episodes you wouldn't, but one of the things I like most about his podcast is that I end up liking quite a few of the interviews with people I've never heard of or I enjoy others more than I thought I would. Some episodes don't do it for me but I give every interview at least 10 minutes to see what's there.

added some good stuff to my podcast rotation from this thread.

Thanks to guys who said Filmdrunk and Mohr Stories.

Slates Hang Up and Listen is a once a week podcast about the biggest sports stories and is pretty informative and smart to listen to.

For guys who like Reality TV, Rob Cesternino has a podcast is a great listen to hear all about Big Brother, Survivor and TV shows like Curb once in a while.

A feed i just started listening to is the Lavender Hour with comedians Natasha Leggero and some dude which is pretty funny talk about all random things.

Firewall and Ice is a good listen to for TV show reviews as possibly the best reviewer alive Alan Sepinwall gives his take on all the recent shows.

I'm not saying that every episode is riveting. But even when I'm not laughing, I am interested in the conversations.

:goodposting: This is pretty good stuff so far. Also giving Karma's suggestion on Freedomain a shot too.

Love him or hate him, Kevin Smith is putting out the most solid podcast network this side of Leo Laporte.

Mohr Stories is really strong.

Hollywood Babble-On is solid with good stories.

Having Sex with Katie Morgan is entertaining at times as well. Not sure it can go daily, but the first few episodes are good.

The ABCs of SNL is really good so far, but just two episodes.

None of this stuff is going to be confused with NPR, but for what it does, it does it really well. Smith has really moved out of just telling Jay and Silent Bob stories and gotten some really interesting people surrounding him.
