The government didn't mandate that. Your employer saw the rising costs of healthcare that have been going on for years and made the change. If you want your employer should pay for the "much more beneficial" plan, maybe you and your colleagues should form a union and bargain collectively for it.

I am not so opposed to the plan, itself, as it is still a good plan. But the company is reacting to the government telling them what to do/setting new "guidelines"/ laws to operate under. Regardless the company is reacting to the government. The company has built this cost into its business model. Failure of an industry is not necessarily bad. Maybe they had a business model (including negotiated benefits) that wasn't sustainable or maybe the product wasn't acceptable any longer? Each company needs to evaluate what costs it can incur to be successful.
