I'm interested in who you would consider the best or most underrated coaches other then these very proven coaches and why.

I choose **** Vermeil. Granted his winning % isn't great, but I attribute most of that due to the fact that he worked with less then steller franchises, and started from rock bottom as far as talent. All the teams he left behind were far better then when he was brought in. I give him as much credit for Marshall Faulk and Preist Holmes numbers as I do them for having talent. He might be corny, but all of his teams appeared to be high character guys.

One of my favorite and most underrated coaches imo.

Pretty open-ended question here. Since we're apparently allowed to choose dead coaches, gotta go with Bill Walsh.

Neither Philadelphia nor KC was better when Vermeil left than when he took over. Philly was 3-6 in Vermeil's last year, and didn't have a winning season until 6 years later. Does KC look better now than it was under Schottenheimer? And Vermeil had exactly one good year in St. Louis.Walsh is such an obvious choice that he has to be considered an omission from the original list.

Madden.

Tom Flores. It's amazing how little respect a guy who won two Super Bowls gets.

Holmgren. Took two different teams to the Superbowl. Got robbed in Seattle. Winner

Sure it's open ended. The question is who you would want to coach your fictional NFL team? **** Vermeil is possibly my favorite/most underrated coach. I think he can turn a franchise around and keep it full of high character players and install a deadly offense.I would want a great defensive coordinator as he didn't exactly have great defenses except the overachieving 99 team.

I don't see how you can't answer Bill Walsh here, though I understand the Paul Brown contingent too (which, incidentally, Walsh was a former Brown disciple). I'm actually surprised that Walsh wasn't on the original list.

K, just some pretty glaring exceptions to that list, IMO, kinda wondering how/why you drew that particular line.

Probably not the best coach but I bet it would have been fun to play for Bum Phillips.

Exactly what i was going to say...no questions here... he should have been on the first list.BAM

I'll take an interesting choice... Just to really "challenge" myself if I were a GM.

Jack Pardee - His worst record was 4-10 with the Chicago Bears in 1975 but he went 87-77 overall as a head coach in the late 70's and early 90's. He was insanely good with Houston (42-22 prior to 1994 where he went 1-9 but lost 5 games by 3 points) but basically got screwed due to the lack of playoff success and because his teams used the Run & Shoot offense.

Of note: Jeff Fischer went 7-9, 8-8, 8-8, 8-8 in the 4 seasons after Pardee left Houston. Missed the playoffs all 4 seasons.

His Houston teams were really, really good on both sides of the ball in terms of yards

1990: 1st Offense, 11th Defense

1991: 2nd Offense, 9th Defense

1992: 3rd Offense, 3rd Defense

1993: 3rd Offense, 14th Defense

Bill Walsh seems pretty obvious to me.

Personally if given the choice of any coach of all-time, I'd rank Walsh 3rd behind Noll and Lombardi.

If we are talking a guy who is underrated historically and hasn't been mentioned yet I'll throw in Mike Shanahan and Hank Stram.

ETA: I missed Stram being mentioned.

Can someone explain to me how in the Nine Hells Bill Walsh is "underrated?"

Thanks in advance.

This would be my order as well. Walsh is, by far, the best coach I've seen. The respect Walsh gave Brown, despite Brown's initial recommendations against Walsh ever becoming a head coach, sells me on putting Brown as 1 over Walsh.

When Walsh went to Cincinnati to coach under Paul Brown, he took his passing offense with him that he had learned from Sid Gillman in Oakland. I would say that Gillman was a bigger influence on Walsh than Brown was -- at least w/r/t the passing offense.

Probably should be added to list of guys to exclude

Paul Brown

Bill Walsh

John Madden

Jimmy Johnson

George Halas

Current Underrated

Jeff Fisher

John Fox

Tony Dungy

1. Paul Brown

2. Jimmy Johnson

3. Bill Walsh

4. Bud Grant

Id put George Halas, Paul Brown and Bill Walsh against any three coaches you listed in the original post.
