I mentioned the stud player on my sons team before. Well... he just went to state with our school and finished 2nd. As a 6th grader in the 7th grade slot.

He is about the tallest in the grade, easily the strongest as well. Kid is a beast. He is focused on making weight next season so it will be fun as heck to watch him with the ball in his hand.

Went to state, as in running track?

Yup. 2nd place in Illinois for 100M as a 6th grader running against 7th graders (no 6th grade category). Kid is a beast.

woah. that's amazing. What was his time?

I remember the 2nd game I ever played as a freshman in HS football (JV team). I was DE and had outside contain. First play of the game, toss sweep comes my side. I totally misjudged the speed of the RB. He smoked me and my entire team for a 70 yard score. Was so fast that he did the last 5 yards into the end zone backwards looking at us trying to catch up.

I can't recall an Armenian not also speaking English when they started talking to me in Armenian during that time. It went pretty much like "something in Armenian" and then me "I am sorry, I do not speak Armenian" and then instantly changing to "Oh, well, I need to open a checking account." and then we were off and running 100% of the time.

For Spanish, there were plenty of times that that was their only language and I quickly went to grab someone to translate or assist them. A few times that no one was available so I did my best with my limited Spanish and they did their best with their limited English and more times than not, we figured it out together. However, there were plenty of times that they also spoke English as well. However, I also distinctly remember two occasions in Van Nuys. In both the response to me telling them I did not speak Spanish well was along the lines of "why not?" The first time the reply in perfect, no accent English and was "Why don't you speak Spanish?" I was kind of stunned and confused, unsure how to answer that question... I kind of stammered out a "uh... because... I never learned?" It later occurred to me that they assumed I was Latino. When I was in Spain, I was told by a Spaniard that I could pass for Spanish and this was So Cal in my early 20's so I had a good solid tan skin tone so I can understand it. If they only speak Spanish then it is what it is. If they spoke English then obviously they assumed for some reason that I spoke Spanish. I guess again cause I could somewhat look like a Latino. I had a buddy of mine who was half Polish and half Mexican and was fluent in Spanish but he looked more 'white' than I did and caught people talking about him in Spanish in front of him numerous times. Just funny how people make assumptions on whether or not you speak a language or not.

Also, my closest friend here in Chicago area for a long time assumed I was Mexican. After several years of being friends one day something came up and it was brought up. He said he just assumed since I was from So Cal. I could not stop laughing. I have a super white surname and normally people do not think I am Latino though as I said before a Spaniard told me I could pass for one (I also was told I could pass for Russian when I was Russia) But I guess I could be the Miklo from Blood In Blood Out.

For the Armenian... I don't get at all, I do not look Armenian at all, other than the few times that I happened to be sitting at one of my co-workers desk with her name plate I had no idea why they would assume I spoke Armenian.... but even when at that desk clearly I wasn't an Angela Harutyunyan.

My son (current sophomore) has a Mega-camp tomorrow in the Chicago area, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Purdue will be the big boys in the house along with a number of Ivy league schools, MAC schools and FCS schools. Saturday we are likely heading to a camp in St. Louis area where a number of Big 10, Mountain West, SEC, ACC, Big 12, MAC and FCS schools will be attending.

Attending these camps at the end of your sophomore year are key, coaches can start talking to you as well as gets the ball rolling on the recruiting process for those that are not top players in the country. We visited a few of the colleges that will be attending these camps, hopefully more opportunities develop out of these camps.

Unfortunately, my son got into a car accident a few weeks ago, totaled his car. Had to get 15 stitches in his knee and also had some superficial scrapes on his knee/leg. He was looking at being down for 3 weeks, which ended Monday. He did some o-line training on Saturday and did so without a problem. We were originally looking at scrapping the camps, but he was able to get healthy and is ready to attend.

Wisconsin high school passed a rule where the new sports season starts June 1, so tonight is my sons first practice for next season. We have a transfer into our program who put up 1300 all purpose yards last year, we were already pretty well set at the RB position.

Well, got my fingers crossed for my son for tomorrow and this weekend, hoping something develops out of these camps.

Oregon, Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, BYU, Purdue, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Air Force, Stanford, UNLV, just to name a few will be at this camp.

He should be good to go. Grew some since the end of the season, now 6'4" 275, hoping he can put on another 5-10 prior to the season.

Curious about the camps- I have seen some sports recruiting gurus say the camps are not worth it speaking in terms of all sports but I feel like football is the exception to this. Have you been to these camps before? Were you told to go by someone who knows stuff? Did you find it on your own? Etc...

I have kind of avoided it with my daughter (at least not doing any this year as she enters 9th) with vball but starting to figure this stuff out for my older son as HS is now on the horizon (entering 7th this year). I am projecting him to be recruitable in football and swim right now- at what level? Who knows, way too early.

In my opinion it depends on the age of the player. College coaches really can't speak to players in their freshman year. I took my son to a camp last year at a Big Ten school, all the freshman worked in a certain area that the coaches really paid little attention. The coaches were all focused on Juniors and Sophomores, because they pay quicker dividends. Usually coaches speak to players after the camps, but NCAA rules limit them speaking to freshman, so the boys were pretty much left alone. If they did try to speak with a coach they were told wait until next year then I can speak with you.

My son has done a prep redzone camp, this was extremely helpful. He was able to talk to the writer for the site and he did a write-up on my son. Additionally, my son did drills and one on ones with other players in the area and was able to measure his talents against theirs. I believe there is a volleyball version of prep redzone.

This year the camps could pay dividends because Rivals will be there which is a major recruiting site. They put together commentary on the highlighted players. He probably should be doing camps at the respective colleges. This allows the college to see the player live but it is on your dime (travel and hotel if necessary). My son has a teammate, fellow sophomore who is traveling to camps all over driving upwards of 10 hours to college camps. the college camps are good because coaches can see you in person as opposed to Mega camps where you have to stand out among a few hundred players. But Mega camps allow you to be seen by upwards of 50 schools as opposed to a college camp where you are seen by one school.

My recommendation for the easiest and fastest way to get your kids name out there is they have a twitter page to post highlights. They can also "friend" college coaches which then lead to opportunities in the future.

I think I read that the restriction to sophomores is only for D1. I think D2, D3 and NAIA do not have the same restrictions so I wonder if it would make sense to do one or more of the mega camps that has a lot of D2 and D3 schools. I think the redzone would make sense too early on as they seem to do like a combine so the stats would be available. It is really hard to say what potential level of play my son will be recruitable for so maybe taking advantage of trying to build some options in D2. I am thinking D2 mostly as if he didn't get a scholarship, my thinking would be to have him go the JUCO route with the new rule that JUCO time does not count to eligibility and on top of that being the youngest in his grade may help him develop more... but that is all a few years off.

Both my sons are doing the ND camp this summer (the only thing that kind of sucks about that is that they are different days because of different age groups, so I have to make two round trips in the same week of a 2 hour drive). I am not really doing it for recruiting purposes so no expectation there. It is more of a fun experience thing that also is fun for me as a fan. Also hoping to selfishly solidify their fandom for ND.

Other than that, they are doing skill development camps for football and basketball. For football, mostly HS camps. A couple of Catholic schools and then the local public school and then two weeks of a Bo Jackson camp that they have been going to each year for several years and it is their favorite camp each summer.

For my daughter, I really kind of want her to get back on things. She broke her arm this year and missed all of basketball and half of the volleyball season. She got the rust off but missed out on development time for sure and I think still not in as good of shape as she was before breaking her arm. She is about to though.... she started basketball camp for her school today but then next week she is busy bee.... basically starting at 8am and ending at 8:30pm on a couple of days on Mon and Wed.... basketball camps, then flag football camp, then summer league basketball games and then beach volleyball practice. The rest of the week the same except for the basketball games and beach volleyball practice. Next summer, I will look more for university camps and ID camps etc for her to really get her recruiting going.

I mentioned the stud player on my sons team before. Well... he just went to state with our school and finished 2nd. As a 6th grader in the 7th grade slot.

He is about the tallest in the grade, easily the strongest as well. Kid is a beast. He is focused on making weight next season so it will be fun as heck to watch him with the ball in his hand.

Yup. 2nd place in Illinois for 100M as a 6th grader running against 7th graders (no 6th grade category). Kid is a beast.

I remember the 2nd game I ever played as a freshman in HS football (JV team). I was DE and had outside contain. First play of the game, toss sweep comes my side. I totally misjudged the speed of the RB. He smoked me and my entire team for a 70 yard score. Was so fast that he did the last 5 yards into the end zone backwards looking at us trying to catch up.

I know the "we ran away from him" comment was meaning they would take plays opposite of the field he was on but it reminded me of last season where there was a kid is who actually did run away from my son on kickoff.

It was not am uncommon thing that my son would launch a kid during kickoffs. The.second kickoff of the game this kid who had been a victim in the first clearly was like "nope" and ran away from me son.

Took my youngest to Notre Dame youth camp yesterday. It was a great experience and he loved it. I got a video of him hitting the Play Like a Champion Sign, pictures on the field, got a mini helmet for Coach Freeman and some players to sign for him, and more. He didn't want to leave- lol. I told him he has to have very good grades if he wants to go to ND. We didn't know it but one of his friends from school went too so I hooked up with his father and we hung out.

Going back tomorrow with my older son for the Jr High camp. His buddy from his school will be there. Considering his buddy won the 'fastest camper' award last year, good chance he will win it again.

And the oldest at Notre Dame camp. I am exhausted but it was well worth it. He loved it too. It is pretty cool to get coaching straight from Irish coaches. Freeman was around all camp long interacting with the boys, coaching and watching. During "Irish Ball" my son went up for a contested reception, they hit pretty hard mid air and my son came down with it. Freeman got a excited and signaled it was a catch. Pretty cool moment for me, I am not sure my son even knew Freeman was watching at that point.

They had a fastest camper contest which my son knew he would not win as the star player from our team who is faster than him was there but he was hoping to make the finals. He ended up third in his group, considering this is all of Jr High that is pretty solid accomplishment. Our star player won his group in the preliminaries so he ran in the final. He ended 4th which is dang good... the top two tied the first run so they ran again and both were 8th graders (I didn't really get a good look at the guy who was in third).

Both sons really enjoyed it, they want to go back next year and they want to go to ND so I am a happy Dad.

For our football team, I just found out that they started practicing on Wednesday's for those who want to play a skill position. I did not know about it, the mother of the star player told me, so I will get my boy there. The notification did not go through the normal school but it sounds like the Varsity coach asked one of the Moms to spread the word. Since my wife has been basically MIA fighting cancer she isn't in the "Mom Groups" and apparently none of the Mom's thought to reach out to me.

The big news though is for the 3/4 team. I have had anxiety since the end of last season about whether they would have enough for a team. We only had 4 (including my son) 3rd graders last year and this years entire boy class for 3rd grade has 8 boys. I have been recruiting the boys who did not play last year since then with some success. We needed 14 per league rules (and just to have a functioning team) and we were at 11 from the last point I checked in. One student that I think I could have got to sign up but gave up because unfortunately he was transferring out of the school since they moved. I saw him and his mother checking in to the local HS camp this week and talked to her. We talked a while and at different points him missing the boys in the school and him wanting to play football - it dawned on my that if he signed up for CCD, he could still play. I pitched it to his Mom, talked about why he should play and how it would keep him in touch with his friends. She was open to it. I told the AD and then he gave me the good news that a few more boys from some of our feeder schools had signed up and we were at 15! So officially my son has football this year. He is super excited.

I saw my nephew today as we celebrated Fathers Day. He plays football at the local high school that my sons attended this week other than the days they missed going to ND. My son had told me that they were calling him "Little Bitt" (Bitt being a play on my nephews last name) and thought he was his younger brother. I mentioned something to him about it and he mentioned in reply that they all couldn't believe how good he was. Which is cool to hear as almost all (with one exception) the boys in his grade play with the local club team.

Since then he has received 2 offers from Ivy league, 2 offers from military academies and a couple others sniffing around. So a lot can happen for my son with the upcoming season. Have the coaches talked about that being where they would want to see him at the college level too or is there any talk about something else?

My son is on a trajectory to have a decent chance to be recruited for football at some level. One option I am thinking is a good possibility for him would be to do JUCO largely because he is the very young end of his school year, thus more development time at JUCO that does not count against his eligibility might be a good option if he isn't getting the interest he wants when the time comes. So, I am extra interested in your journey here as it can inform my son's. My daughter is more along in the recruiting timeline considering she is going into her freshman year but I wonder if she is really committed to working at Volleyball to the level she will need in order to really play college level sports.

Yea, from what I have gathered, it may not be far off from saying the hardest offer to get is the first one. It seems a lot of other schools ears perk up when someone gets an offer and then it tends to move up the food chain of schools.

My son is on a trajectory to have a decent chance to be recruited for football at some level. One option I am thinking is a good possibility for him would be to do JUCO largely because he is the very young end of his school year, thus more development time at JUCO that does not count against his eligibility might be a good option if he isn't getting the interest he wants when the time comes. So, I am extra interested in your journey here as it can inform my son's. My daughter is more along in the recruiting timeline considering she is going into her freshman year but I wonder if she is really committed to working at Volleyball to the level she will need in order to really play college level sports.

I should correct myself. The school this FCS coach was from we visited last year, but we were unable to speak much with the coaches, they were more focused on the Seniors and Juniors. This year he will get more attention, especially if we make a visit. At the camp, the coach followed my son around a little bit to watch his drills and one on ones. So he probably got a list ahead of time and highlighted who he wanted to watch. The coach stated they will be in contact with my son, probably end up having to make another visit.

Last summer a teammate of my sons was at a camp and the head coach of the MAC school was talking to my sons teammate, asked him where my son was at. We didn't go because this whole process was too new. Anyways, the coach showed my son's teammate his white board in his office and he had his top 5 recruits by graduation year and my son and his teammate were listed for 2027 graduates. Now I don't know how much of that is coach speak and how much is real, I'll take it with a grain of salt, but they are following through by sending notification that he is a top recruit.

As far as reading up on books on recruiting in all honesty I have done none of that. Pretty much speak to people at these camps or speak to the dad of a teammate who is going through the process now.

I think the biggest trick in all this is Twitter. It is amazing the number of connections these kids make through twitter. They can use twitter to post highlights and tag coaches who can see them play. From there the coaches and recruiters follow and your name gets out there. The thing that sucks is the parents are entirely out of the loop. For example, last season my son says dad "where's Purdue?" So I tell him its location and about the school. Then about two hours later he says, "can we visit Purdue? I just got an invite to attend a game." I was thoroughly confused on how the whole thing developed so we went, then in April he was invited to attend a Spring Practice. The whole time I was not involved until my son asked me to bring him to these events. Not complaining just felt a little strange in how the process works.

My son (12, finishing up 6th grade) just wrapped up his 5th (maybe 4th?) season of flag. He improved SO much this past season. The coaches usually give the kids a certificate or something, with a fun nickname or moniker that describes their play and what they mean to to the team. I would bet that he gets "most improved" or something to that effect.

We've been on the same team ever since we started, and they play 2 of the 3 "seasons" per year. They won't start up again until Fall for this league, so we signed my boy up for a different local league to give him something to do over summer. He's really enjoying it, asking me to go toss the ball around at least 4-5 days a week.

I'm somewhat nervous about him starting in a new league on a new team with new coaches, but it might be good for him.

Had our first practice on the new team in the new league. Definitely a drop-down in talent with this league, at least on the team he's on. It's a 7th/8th coed league and he'll be one of the younger kids, but he's the biggest kid on his team and even with his moderate athletic talent, one of the better athletes. So there's a chance he'll shine on defense and actually make some plays on offense. I think I'm gonna owe this kid a lot of money this season! (we have an agreement where he gets $1/tackle, $5 for a pick, etc.)

My daughter is more along in the recruiting timeline considering she is going into her freshman year but I wonder if she is really committed to working at Volleyball to the level she will need in order to really play college level sports.

Have you picked up any books or followed anyone etc to learn about recruiting?

College football in Wisconsin is "strange" in that we have the Badgers, but no Division 2 teams (primarily in Minnesota), but the Division 3 program in Wisconsin is strong, in fact I read an article last year I think it was in Athletic that called the Wisconsin Division 3 league the SEC of Division 3. A lot of players if they cant get a D1 (FCS or FBS) usually attend the state schools in Division 3. As far as Division 2 my son is definitely open to the idea, in fact his team is heading to Minnesota State on Sunday for an 18 team three day camp. Most of the high schools are from Minnesota, so it will be good experience to scrimmage against other schools he would never see. Additionally this gets him in front of the D2 school that can see him live.

My son plays right tackle because that is his natural position. He grew up playing hockey and lacrosse, sports which require footwork, which helped in his offensive line work.
