For the $20 "credit", users must apply it themselves. Not an automatic credit. With as much trouble as they're causing customers, you'd think they wouldn't make the customer do more work to get it. But that's also the smart way to make sure most of the "credits" are never redeemed.
Not that hard. Takes a minute or two?

I don’t blame YouTube for this. I blame disney for trying to extort people over to Hulu, which they own. I’m not falling for that.

I'm not privy to the inside details of the negotiation. So I don't have a clear sense on who to "blame".

Others must have more inside information.
I think The Athletic has had some pretty good reporting on it. The general points I've read, IIRC, are:

1) ESPN is doubling the cost of the fees negotiated 3 years ago. Must be the tarriffs, lol. That seems steep to me. So I'd lean YT here.

2) YT hired away the top ESPN exec recently so now he is negoiating against ESPN with great knowledge of their process/costs. So, YT could be exploiting that and/or ESPN could be acting aggreived out of anger. Slight lean to ESPN here.

3) ESPN is trying to drum up ESPN Unlimited to consumers and also recently purchased the Hulu Live/FUBO business. Given that they are the biggest likely gainer of anyone switching, I think ESPN is trying very hard to gain business for their new services. I'd lean YT strongly here because I don't love that tactic.

Given the above, both companies are trying to make more money, but ESPN is being "less reasonable" to me and has more to gain. So, I support YT.
My wife only watches ESPN or sports a little bit and my daughters don't really watch them at all. We all love the YT interface and it's best we've used, even better than the old PSVue that we loved.

For us, it makes sense to stay with YT and watch less ESPN. I'm fine clicking a button for a small credit, although I agree that it should be automatic.

I'm pretty sure clicking a button in an email is not much work.
The point is, why force the paying customer, who is not getting what they paid for due to no fault of their own, to do any work at all. A simple credit applied to everyone’s account is incredibly easy. To require work, for the obvious reason of knowing not everyone will do it, only reinforces the greed angle. It’s an incredibly poor look at a time where they could do right by their customers.
How will I ever get that 5 seconds of my time back?

I went to YTTV website and was able to get $20 credit, and I checked the upcoming Dec 2025 charges, and it says $72.99, so it looks like the $10 off for 6 months is still valid too.
Yep still paying 45.99.... my antenna will be just fine for mnf for now. I don't watch that often anymore anyway unless I think it will be a good game or my team

My wife is an eagles fan so she's on board with the antenna

Win win

I do think that it's funny that for most of our adult lives, lots of us men have been trying to get to the sports bar to watch football yet justify that to our wives. Yet here we are with a perfect excuse and we're just complaining about it and changing our provider so we can stay home.
Alanis Morrissette should add that verse to her song.
It's cold out there.

What does YTTV provide if you don't want to watch sports? I think most of the other channels can be found using a one-time $25 over the air antenna.

I prefer $20 you have to take 30 seconds to claim vs, say, $10 given to everyone automatically. I know that's not the only possible alternative, but realistically the likely one.

Grrr this credit is too much work, think I'll switch platforms instead. Much less work!

:lmao:
It's a BS credit if they aren't applying it automatically. They are hoping most of their customers don't know about it so they don't have to hand it out.

My gut feeling is Disney is trying to extort money to have a monopoly with Hulu and ESPN unlimited. And YT probably isn't much less greedy but at the end of the day, sports watchers want sports and if YTTV doesn't have them then they are going to lose out.

I hope the end result of all this ends up being true a la carte TV packages. Just give me my sports bundle and I'll use an antenna for the rest. I don't want to pay for Crime shows, garden shows, house shows, and cartoon shows with my sports.

Becuz YTTV has other customers who don't watch ESPN, and any of those people don't even know that ESPN is gone, why offer the credit to them?

People who want it, and can use the money, will claim it.

The money still counts.

I get that people think Google is getting over here, but by simply claiming the money, it's a valid credit.

I get the point that they could have made it automatic, but.... whatever. They didn't. And so?

People gonna ditch YTTV because the credit wasn't automatic??

This is about as far from a monopoly situation as you can get. Moreover, you need the monopoly before you can begin "extorting" money. You've got it backwards.

YTTV is/was trying to be able to offer a sports and local station only package for a lower price. The problem is that it's not a popular idea for Disney, Paramount, Fox, Comcast, who want most of their other stations included in a package deal.

We can get TNT/TBS, the Weather Channel, Food Network, CNN and HGTV using an antenna?
I can't even get NBC, and most of the other OTA options had crappy signals last time I checked. One of the downsides of living in a hilly area not exactly close to the "local" channels.

Multi-View. But I am sure that's mostly sports.

Even if one never uses the multi-view, which I am sure a lot of people don't, they have unlimited DVR. Pick a show, and it just records it whenever it airs, for you to play whenever you like.

Being able to delete channels is great as well. Channel guide is customizable, so if you only watch a few channels, which I assume is all of us, you don't need to scroll past channels you never watch. All YOUR channels sit at the top of the channel guide.

No, I ditched them because they don't provide the channels I want to watch anymore.

You can get weather yes but not sure about the actual Weather channel. I can get the weather on a phone app in 10 seconds though. I don't watch that other stuff but if that's important to you then I see why you want them. Are those channels worth $70/month? I pay for those channels to get my sports but shouldn't have to. You pay for sports to get those channels but shouldn't have to. I like the ESPN/Fox bundle for sports and can get NBC and CBS over an antenna. I'm on a free Peacock deal through February and can live without that when it expires.

The only thing I think I'm missing is those stupid channels CBS farms the NCAA tournament off to but I'll just hit a free trial of something for a week to watch that. It's probably only a matter of time before CBS makes us pay for a service to watch that tournament.

Monday night football was an event at college and after college. Social outing and it’s sad to think that’s gone for young people.

Chi Chi's hotdog bar......

You guys should at least do the DIRECTV free trial. I'm paying less than I was with YTTV (although YMMV since I had to shell out $19/month for my regional sports channel; DTV carries it so that cost is gone) and getting significantly more.

The package I chose (Choice) also gives me ESPN with all the fixin's (i.e., NHL, NBA, College football & basketball, soccer, field hockey ... everything), Disney+ and ABC/ESPN on the main service.

Hell, it even has the Red Zone channel (in Choice, not sure of other packages).
Another question. I did get the free trial for directv streaming. I use a Roku stick on the TV, and thus have a roku remote. Appears that the roku remote will not go back to previous channel on directv. Is there a remote that will enable that for directv streaming?? Roku remote can swith back to previous channel for YTTV and I do like that.
Hey, thanx again guys & gals.

But they don't carry MY locals..... This is what is dizzying in all this mess lol......maybe $300 cable is the way!!!!

So the point flew right over your head. Got it.

Yttv till I die
:gang2:
I have the ticket for this year because we got a deal. Not sure that was worth it at this point. But I do think it has the best in class interface.
Do you have to keep a YTTV subscription to access the Sunday Ticket content?
It used to be a stand-alone package where you didn't need any other subscription. I don't know if that's still the cases I don't actually have The Sunday ticket

I've tried "alternative";methods but I'm probably an old man yelling at clouds, With that I just can't seem to find anything on the high seas

People who want it, and can use the money, will claim it.
So the idea of only automatically crediting people who have purchased the programming missed is too complicated?

And, for the record, it’s not just ESPN. Accountanting for the cross section of people likely missing out on a channel they enjoyed but have lost its likely a very high percentage of subscribers.

People gonna ditch YTTV because the credit wasn't automatic??
Some maybe, but that wasn’t my point. It’s about customer service. This could have been an easy win for YTTV from that perspective. Instead now they have people like me with no real options on who’s at fault now looking at them for appearing greedy. It’s an absolute misstep that could have very easily been avoided.

I will take my credit and be happy about it. Still not going to go seek out espn somewhere else.
Really? You're happy about this?

All of this kind of stuff is just eroding my desire to watch tv. A good thing as far as I am concerned.
You know you can simply cancel any and all streaming services to make it an even better thing.

I don’t blame YouTube for this. I blame disney for trying to extort people over to Hulu, which they own. I’m not falling for that.
I'm not choosing sides on this. What's the point? Disney and Google Alphabet are for profit companies looking to maximize revenue. I don't blame Disney for trying to do the same thing YTTV is trying to do. Disney just happens to be pushing their point (unlike whichever content provider was in YTTV's last slap fight; seemed like whoever that was caved pretty quickly, likely to avoid losing even more money).

Is it a PITA to switch providers a hell of a lot more frequently than back in the "bad old days" of cable? Sure, but I'd rather optimize and get what I want for the lowest possible price. YMMV

Thanks to the YTTV v Disney standoff I've found a better content provider at a lower cost. I hope I don't have to change it anytime soon.
Anomalies happen all the time.

Hey, thanx again guys & gals.
This is true for me as well with the Amazon Firestick. I've found that if I hit the up button it shows the most recent channels and I can get there with that. It's actually more convenient since I can go back 2, 3 or more channels.

There is a remote that enables DTV, it's there produce (Gemini) and it is $10 bucks more a month. I'll make do.

Thank You, thank you. I did not know how to do that. Perfecto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep in mind that YTTV is also saving about the equivalent of what Disney is losing every week ($30 million), because they don't have to pay Disney. That savings makes their $20 opt in credit ring a bit hollow, especially if this thing keeps dragging on.

The consumer is really the one getting the short end in this deal.

No, I got your "point" completely. Your opinion is Google is being greedy and has totally crapped the customer service bed by having you spend 5 seconds to claim a credit that they in no way have to offer.

Filing that in the crazy things people complain about folder.
