Disney Vacation (3 Viewers)

Headed to AK Father's day weekend, and staying at Orange Lake.  My wife's aunt gave us some old tickets that never expired, that I am having a problem with.  One is from 2002 and the other is 2008.  I have to call Disney again tonight to have them help me.  I can't get the one, that I could add to show in the mde app.  I'm worried we are going to be stuck with crappy fast passes.  Has anyone done the avatar stuff yet?

Wasn't part of the hang up the requirement Disney was putting on what's her nuts to give up control of how Harry Potter World would be implemented in Disney?
I could see that, unfortunately. And I guess another way to look at it is that if they had Harry Potter, maybe they would not have been as motivated to do Star Wars world.

way to go "Flight of Passage"

I've read that the harness system for FoP is unique whereas it locks you in from a seat back and leg bars from behind. So you hop on this motorcycle looking seat, press your chest against the front and then get locked in from behind.

the major issue that it is facing right now is that there is no test seat at the entrance and unfortunately some of the much larger guests are not finding out they cannot fit on the ride and have to be escorted out only when they are at the end of the line and loading.

While I can see this as a major embarrassment, Disney agrees and is willing to offer a token of consolation to these guests......in the form a free snack credit. :oldunsure:

you cant make this #### up.

LOL, hopefully that plays into my favor and keeps the wait times down for next Sunday.

Heard nothing but fantastic reviews from the people that have actually ridden it.

AK stays open until 11pm the night we go so we're hoping to arrive early afternoon and stay late.  I want to see AK at night, but don't see how that would be possible if we got there when the park opens at 8am.  Our 4 park ticket package doesn't allow us to leave and come back.

Because I'm not only here to help plan, I'm also here to help medically

Doctor Discovers A Particular Roller Coaster Helps People Pass Kidney Stones

A Michigan State University professor emeritus discovered recently that riding a roller coaster helps patients pass kidney stones with nearly a 70 percent success rate.

That coaster is Walt Disney World’s Big Thunder Mountain.

“Basically, I had patients telling me that after riding a particular roller coaster at Walt Disney World, they were able to pass their kidney stone,” Michigan State University professor emeritus David Wartinger says. “I even had one patient say he passed three different stones after riding multiple times.”

Wartinger is in MSU’s Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties. He led both a pilot study and an expanded study to assess whether the stories he was hearing from patients were true, according to a MSU press release.

Do you think insurance would cover the trip? I mean it is a medical procedure.

Its becoming clear to me on the next trip to Orlando we need to plan a full day at Hollywood studios.
is your next trip in 2019? Studios will be under major construction till then while they add Toy Story and Star Wars lands. There are still great rides there, but its not full day worthy yet.

Or did you mean Animal Kingdom. Thats where the new Avitarland is.

Its becoming clear to me on the next trip to Orlando we need to plan a full day at Hollywood studios.
Most disagree with me, but we did a full day at HS last time we were there.  We got three 10ish and stayed til close.  We practically everything.  All the shows, big late lunch at Sci Fi, met all the characters, rode everything at least twice (except Toy Story).

It is a grind.  We'll be there next Friday and we'll probably arrive late again and stay til close.  4 yo daughter wants her shot at Vader like her brother did last time.  Not sure we'll get there early enough though.

@glvsav37 It will be my wifes bday while we're at HS.  Anything special you can have done?  Nothing major...

cool...always fun to have a special celebration there.
1st, be sure and tell every phone operator you talk to from now on that it is her birthday. Also, be sure she gets a birthday button. Neither one of these will ensure you get any special magic...but its better then not saying it. You never know, you might find a nice piece of chocolate in your room or some extra 'birthday fastpasses' while in the park. Again, not guaranteed, but its worth a shot.

As for scheduling something for her, an easy way is—if you having dining reservations that day—to call Disney Catering and have them create a custom cake. Check out this ongoing thread on the DisBoards where people post pictures of their cakes and prices. Some pretty creative stuff. All the info for ordering in on the 1st page. Their number is 407-827-2253.

For a simpler version, they have begum making these simple Happy Birthday mouse ear cakes. They are only $35 and an easy way to add a little "thinking of you' to the meal.

If you wanted to so something for the room, Disney floral has some nice bouquets and other gifts you can order. A bit on the pricey side vs doing something at home, but thats just it, you're in disney.

If you want to step it up, you can hire Disney's Fine Art Photography to do a mini-portrait session with your family. These are different then your normal photopass photographers and they will get some cool shots.

If you are at Studios that day, you are right by the Yacht and Beach club. You can charter a pontoon boat for a private Illuminations cruise and watch the show from under the bridge b/t France and Canada. You wouldn't need an admission tix b/c you are never actually entering the park.

Likewise, they have just released a new mid-day cruise. For $150 you get a captained boat to take you around the lakes in front of the Y&B/Boardwalk as well as around the world showcase lagoon inside Epcot. On the boat is snacks and soft drinks but you can have Disney cater a nice lunch and some wine on it and make it a special lunch cruise.

I've noted in the past that I did a special private scavenger hunt for my wife's B-day. I can get you that info if you want.

And then of course there is the pampered in VIP treatment if you book a VIP Tour. They have begun offering a wider variety of these with varied itineraries but it might be fun to have her treated like royalty and get front line access and reserved seating to everything for the day.

Hope that helps!

I'm seriously considering a DW trip for a long weekend either MLK day or President's Day weekend in 2018.  The wife and I would be taking our 6 YO grand-daughter (princesses ,yada, yada, yada).  GD's parents won't consider missing school, sooo leaving Cleveland Thursday evening and returning on Monday, would get us 3 days of Disney overload.  Would this be doable?, when should I make reservations and any other considerations I should take would be helpful.  I'll hang up and listen, TIA

Edit to Add; my last trip to DW almost 30 years ago, GD never been, if this info helps

3 days would be tight but doable. Maybe you can get an evening flight and spend time in a park Monday.

Plus, if it is just the granddaughter, she will want to spend most of the time in magic kingdom. And probably epcot.

Your granddaughters parents are lame. She is 6. She won't be missing anything from school. Tell them acer from the Internet said so

A couple days out of school for the 6-year-old will give the other kids a chance to catch up to her.  Granddaughter gets extra days at Disney, self-esteem of her classmates isn't ruined.  Everybody wins.

@hockeymedic

If it's me, I would prob do MK on Friday. Sign up for bibidi bobbidi boutique. Get Cinderellas castle as a lunch. Enjoy park.

Saturday I would hit up Epcot. Do Anna and Elsa, Frozen ride and lunch with princesses

Sunday, would prob go AK over Hollywood right now unless she wants to see live Mermaid and Beauty and Beast shows.

Eta: or go back to MK

@hockeymedic Above are all good suggestions.

If it truly has been 30 years since you've been there...sit down and buckle up...we gotta talk...lol.

Question 1: Are you planning staying on or off property?
Question 2: flying or driving?

There are lots of options for staying on site and $$ aside, you will get the most out of the short trip if you stay on site. There are 3 levels of resorts—deluxe, moderate and value—and priced accordingly of course. Deluxe tend to be closer to the main parks, some within walking distance to at least 1. Values further away. However, everything is connected by some form of transportation option—Bus, boat or monorail.

if flying (and staying on site) you don't need to rent a car b/c there is a free bus service that will take you and your luggage (you don't even need to pick it up from baggage claim) straight to your resort.

Plus, since you will be going at a fairly busy time, staying on site will give you an earlier chance to book fast passes. FP's are basically 3 attraction reservations per day that you can make to avoid waiting in line. As an on-site guest you can book them 60 days from your trip vs 30 day for off site guests. FPs for each ride are somewhat limited and the more popular attractions will sell out.

There is also the available to use the Dining plan add-on which will lore-pay your meals and snacks. I won't get too deep into it, its pretty plainly put on the WDW web site. Its not available to off site guests. You will need to make your dining reservations 1st, at the 180 day mark which I believe you may be inside already.

With a little princess I would:
• focus on the Magic Kingdom. There you will get the most Princesses per square foot as well as the most classic Disney attractions. I would say that MK is at the least a 1.5 day park if not 2 full to do it all with parades and fireworks.
• Then its a toss up between Epcot or Animal kingdom.
—Epcot is great, but slim on kid-friendly attractions, except for the Frozen attraction, but I wonder if it is worth spending the day there just for that. World showcase is really amazing to stroll, but based on your limited time there, IDK if it is the best use of your time. You can meet a lot of characters there, etc the international ones like Anna and Else, Mulan, etc—But thats really it for the kids.
—Animal kingdom will be princess-less, but a good change up from the fairlytail MK. Kids love animals and so there is lots there to impress. Plus if she likes Nemo or Lion king, there are both great shows there for her.
• Studios is prob last on the list being that it is under pretty large re-construction and 6-year old girl focus attractions are scare.

For Dining:

There is a wonderful princess dining location right inside the castel called Cinderella's Royal table. It is pricey but a wonderful experience. In there you will meet all the main princesses. As @AcerFC said, handcuff that with a trip to the Bippity Boppioty and you have a princess-in-training's master class. There is also Be Our Guest which is a Beauty and the Beast themed restaurant, quick service for breakfast and lunch and full service for dinner (The beast is the only character there and only at dinner). Just outside the park, a short monorail ride away are 2 other kid-focused locations—Chef Mickeys at the contemporary and 1900 Park fare at grand floridian. CM has MM, Money and the rest of the main group. 1900 is has other outliers like Mary Poppins, Alice (Breakfast) or Cindy, Prince and stepsisters (dinner).

At Epcot, you will meet the same princess for a lot less at Norway. Or right outside on the Boardwalk (walking distance from the Epcot back gate) there is a Breakfast with princess and their princes. Also there is Cape May with Minney Mouse and other Fab-5.

Animal Kingdom will have Tusker house which will be the same Fab-5 as chef mickey's, just dressed in Safari gear. Also a Rain forest cafe.

there are a lot of others, but those are the ones that are the most kid-friendly IMO.

Let us know if you have any other questions....

and off topic...interested in the meaning behind your username....details?

@glvsav37 @AcerFC I've been perusing this thread for a while, so thank you guys and all the others, for all the advice given over the years.

We would be definitely flying in and staying on property.  I'm looking at the resorts and pricing and the ones that hit the beds and price range are the Port Orleans Riverside or Caribbean Beach (under renovation).   How long is the ride to the parks from the resorts.  If we do the BBB, does the princess wear that dress the whole day? Seems to me that would be a PITA, but if princess wants....  Is it possible to schedule BBB and character dining back to back?  I think that's all the ? for now

@glvsav37 and @AcerFC will definitely have more info than I do on this but we just got back from our trip and I can provide a bit of insight.

If you are looking at Port Orleans Riverside you might also want to look at Port Orleans French Quarter. We were told that it is the smallest Disney resort on property. That resulted in us getting on the first bus to/from parks every morning and evening. We were in the farthest building from the lobby and it was still only a 2-3 minute walk to/from bus stops. It isn't "Disneyfied" over the top but it's a nice little resort. It has a decent sized pool with a small water slide (that even my 6 year old who can't swim went on). Restaurant had a nice selection of foods to choose from. Rides to the parks took ~20-25 minutes depending on the park (from French Quarter). They are doing a LOT of construction on the roads and traffic slowed things down quite a bit at times.

We did BBB at Disney Springs one morning and then did parks in the afternoon. We brought along a change of clothes in case our princess wanted to change out of her costume, but she wouldn't even entertain the idea. We did make her change her shoes so that she wasn't wearing her plastic heels all day. BBB took ~1 hour for the "makeover" portion but then they took her to a photopass place and took a BUNCH of pictures of her all dressed up. She loved it. I'd say that if you wanted to do BBB and character dining you'd just need to make sure that you gave yourself plenty of time between the two in case BBB took a little longer than expected. If you are doing BBB you might want to look into getting Memory Maker so that you'll get all of the photos that they take. Our 6 year old princess was an autograph seeking hound on the trip (I think she ended up with 30 or more) and they took pictures at almost all of them (Mary Poppins didn't for some reason) and since we had Memory Maker we got all of them as well. All total for our 9 day trip we ended up with over 600 photos from Disney photographers.

@skinrod876  I remember when we last went, my now 29 YO daughter was a 8 YO.  So I guess it was only 20 years ago, not 30. But, I was totally surprised at the attraction of character autographs.  That was before the special area for autographs, we ended up with 4 of us in different lines to get Chip, Dale, and 2 other characters and then chasing autographs around the park whenever a character was sighted.  I would expect my GD to take after her aunt in that regard.  thanks for the BBB advice.

So I'm inside the 180 day window to book meals.

Is there a way to see early rope drop and late hours to coordinate?

I'll circle back for the listing of restaurants, but what are people's we gotta go here restaurant. Not necessarily due to a memory, but overall great experience and good food (for reference kids are 2 girls, age 10, 6).

TIA

Do you mean EMH (Extra Magic Hours)?  If so, I know Touring Plans has them not sure about where to get them on the Disney site.  If you PM me I'll look it up for you.

Favorite Table Service:

- Le Cellier (2 credits)

- Tusker House

Quick Service

Ride time will vary based on time of day, distance to park and other issues like road construction and traffic as someone else said. But for example, via google maps right now, from PO Riverside to:

MK = 10 Min
Epcot = 11/15 min
Studios = 8 min
AK = 15 min

There are pretty accurate time tables at the bus shelters and I've heard they have integrated them into the Disney mobile app as well. Disney will recommend budgeting 1/2 to 45 mins to go anywhere.

I'm also a fan of taxis and Uber car server. these can be ordered right from the resort (Taxi via the bell desk and Uber via your mobile phone) and cost on average $15 anywhere you go. They save a bunch of time. Taxis are a bit quicker then uber b/c they are always right there.

Not sure if your princess would use a stroller or not, but if you bring one, remember you need to fold it up on the buses—so be careful what you load in it (besides the kid), best advice is to have everything stored in a carry bag that can easily be taken out of the stroller. Nothing worse then watching people try and jam a days worth of crap from their stroller into shopping bags at the bus stop. On the flip side, you do not need to fold it when traveling by boat or monorail.

As for BBB...the princesses tend to wear the costume all day....kids are crazy like that. I suggest buying the costume at home first and bringing it with you—disney store, eBay, etc. You'll save a ton of money vs buying it there. As @skinrod876 said, bring the comfortable shoes though. Another tip id to book the BBB for one of the last appointment slots (I think around 3pm) and then this way she is not dressed all day. Also, try and talk her into a character with a light dress. My daughter did Jasmine which is pretty much has the least amount of material of them all, so she was cool all day.

You mention autographs, well they have really changed it since you've been there. I remember as a kid, the characters would be walking around the park...now they have most of them housed in certain buildings around the park and its a wait (or FastPass) just like a regular attraction. Thats one of the reason i'm a big fan of the character meals b/c it kills 2 birds with one stone—food and autographs. If you see them while you are eating, thats more time for other attractions. If you are on the hunt for a particular character, check out Kenny the Pirate's site, he has all of the character times and locations. Plus, you an stop in at any park's guest services and get a schedule.

Many kids bring a blank autograph book to sign, but with a little googling, you can see some other ideas that may be more fun. i.e A blank pillowcase or tee shirt and a fabric marker (just bring a clipboard or something hard for them to write on), some white frame matting to sign and then you place a photo from the trip in there, a character encyclopedia, she can keep it for years and try and fill it up.  My daughter is artistic and likes to fill a sketch book of the characters for them to sign their drawing.

One character you should try and get is the talking Mickey Mouse on Main St. His wait times fluctuate, but if you can find him with a low, 10-15 minutes wait, be sure and hit it. It will blow your GDaughter's mind.

speaking of characters....they are pulling out a classic set starting today—Chip and Dale have retired from meeting in Fronteerland and in their place are characters from the Country Bear Jamboree.

@odin33 Here are my picks:

Resorts:
Chef Mickey—contemporary  (breakfast)
1900 Park fare — Grand florida in (B or D)
Ohana...ohana...ohana — Polly (Dinner)
Sanaa —AK lodge Kidani (dinner) Its a unique menu and really out of the way, but man its good.

MK:
Be Our Guest (Dinner)
Crystal Palace (Breakfast)

Epcot:
Teppen Edo (Japan)
Norway (Breakfast) Princess dining
Via Napoli (Italy)
Rose and Crown (UK)

Studios:
Sci Fi dine in —set up like a drive in theater, you sit in table made out of old cars. the Experience is very unique
Hollywood and Vine (if the kids like Disney Jr shows—Doc Stuffins, Jake and the Pirates, etc, they may be too old now though)
Brown Derby is really good, but not kid-focused. Kids welcome, but its not a fun type location.

AK:
Tusker house
Yak and Yeti
Rain forest—foods not great but unique atmosphere

Disney Springs (I can only go by very strong recommendations, have not earlier there yet)
Boathouse
Art Smiths Homecomin
T-Rex, I have eaten here and its a dinosaur version of Rain Forest. Cool thing here is they have their own official 'build a bear' workshop but instead of stuffed bears they do stuffed dinosaurs.

Quick Service:
MK: Pecos Bills, Columbia Harbor house, Be Our Guest (Breakfast of lunch), and if you like big ### hot dogs Casey Jr's
Epcot: Sunshine Seasons (The Land Pavilion), Yorkshire Fish Market (UK), Lotus Blossom Cafe (China). Also, make me proud and get a Grey goose slushie from France.
Studios: Not a whole lot special here
AK: Yak and Yeti counter service or Flame Tree BBQ. If you need a basic burger joint, Restaurantasaurus is the best of them there.

Pro Tip #1: if you are on the dining plan, When it comes to Quick serve credits, there is no difference in a childs quick service credit or adult credit—a credit is a credit. So if one kid wants to order of the adult menu, they can at no additional charge.
Pro Tip #2: Want a quick breakfast but not waste a QS credit, places like starbucks, some counter service and your resort will have bagels and muffins that are cost a snack credit. Use this for an on-the-go breakfast.
Pro Tip #3: All credits can be broken down to smaller credits. i'm not sure of the actual conversion, but for example, a dining credit is worth 3 QS credits. A QS credit is worth 2 snack credits. Again, i forget the actual conversion, but know that if you find yourself with unused credits, you can have the front desk at the resort convert them into something else all the way down to snacks. This way, you can go 'buy' packaged candy or a butt load of mickey rice crispy bars to bring home. Don't leave credits unused.

Sticking my hand into the rumors and musings bag, I'll pull out this one I heard over the weekend.

Seems the Paint the night parade from DL has been neatly boxed up and waiting for a shipping label....but to where?

If you don't know, WDW's MK has been without a night time parade since October when the Main St Electrical parade got shipped off to the west coast. IMO, no night time parade at WDW MK is a downright crime. So could this DL parade be coming to Orlando? Maybe....who knows? But....

Today it was announced that the MK daytime parade Festival of Fantasy running daily at 3pm has been moved to 2pm starting in August. Hmmmmm...could this move be happening b/c of another parade later that day?

We will see.

@Bruce Dickinson whats your take on Paint the night?

speaking of characters....they are pulling out a classic set starting today—Chip and Dale have retired from meeting in Fronteerland and in their place are characters from the Country Bear Jamboree.
Are they still at the Garden Grille in Epcot?

It's great. Did they stop running it at DL?
Brought back the Main Street Electrical Parade to DL.

There's rumors that Paint The Night is getting packed and shipping to Orlando to be the new nighttime parade at MK.

My favorite "I'm still a Disney Ninja" moment during my current DLR Annual Pass came on a night where we watched World Of Color from our favorite spot (front row of the Blue section in the Splash Zone), then after DCA closed went across the hall to DL, got routed through a cast hallway to the right of Main Street, popped out right be the corndog cart by Plaza Inn, grabbed a round of corndogs/chips/drinks, then found seating up by Alice for Paint The Night.  The wife got skeptical during the DCA exit but we've learned to trust the process.

The Guardians of the Galaxy ride opens on Friday.  I'll admit a three-day, two-night, midweek jaunt in July or August has crossed my mind more than once.

In a RARE event, DL hit capacity last Saturday and had to turn away guests at the gate for a few hours.  It was a weird storm of events: last weekend for some special half-year passes offered to SoCal residents, Grad Night (an after-hours event for graduates of nearby high schools that is believed to be the biggest cast member nightmare of the year) tickets were honored at DL all day, not just right at park close before the event, and one level of Annual Passes are on the verge of getting blacked out on weekends for a few months.

Can't imagine the lines at the gates with their 1975 way of admitting people.

They moved the west side security station to the other side of Downtown Disney by the Disneyland Hotel, so that has opened up traffic at the entry plaza a bit.

But the process of stopping guests at the turnstiles to take their photos when activating an Annual Pass is flat-out maddening.  Even the CedarFair park on the other side of the city from us figured out to construct a dedicated Season Ticket shack to handle all that stuff.  (And yes, I am currently at DLR Annual Passholder AND a CedarFair Season Passholder right now.  That sort of thing happens to me.  A lot.)

Nice job! Our family generally skips parades, but we all thought Paint The Night was pretty awesome.

:towelwave:  need to get back and get some corndogs. Wife won't understand why we don't have any dinner reservations.
Forgot if I shared our divide-and-conquer strategy for our favorite DL dinner.  Send one team to Bengal Barbeque to order a pile of skewers.  I like everything on that menu, recommend two skewers per person.  They will work with you on transporting them, like wrap in foil and give you extra plates.  Send the other team to the Mint Julep Bar window to order a sack of Mickey beignets and beverages.  (if you have an odd number of team numbers, send the extra person to Mint Julep - you will want the extra arms for transporting drinks)  Meet up at the open seating tables in New Orleans Square.  You've got skewers, beignets, drinks, outdoor seating, and have spent less than Blue Bayou for more food in less time.

Awesome. Shame MK doesn't have food like this.

We are going for a 3-day trip this weekend. Ohana, cape may and a trip around whatever festival that Epcot has at the moment all on the schedule. Also doing the new show dessert party at MK, which I contend is a miserable waste of money, but at least I don't have to be in the hoard of people.
