2024 Detroit Lions: Getting ready for the draft in Motown. (19 Viewers)

Ansah played 30 snaps last week. He rushed the passer on 21 of those. So basically, a sack every 6 times Sanchez dropped back.

99 had 2 yesterday, so now second in the NFL in Sacks. Not bad for a guy who has been playing the game for six years and didn't start until his Senior year.

 
Stafford won't win any championships, but the Lions aren't realistically winning any championships in the next couple of years. They need to draft a QB they think they can groom for the future and ride out the end of Stafford's contract imo.

Tough to judge much on Detroit's performance last week. Tampa trounced the Eagles too and then laid an egg against Indy. I'm starting Stafford and Lacy, though, so here's to a good old fashioned shootout. :cheers:

That was desperation at that point. The way they started the game they should have had a 30 point lead at half time but instead got wayyyyyyyyy to conservative

Felt GGRREEAATT seeing Caldwell's stupid expression after the game losing touchdown. Stafford should have thrown for 5 touchdowns this night if Coach Caldfail hadn't curled up into the fetal position and turned conservative. This guy does not belong in a head coaching position. Didnt they do a physical before hiring him? If they had they would have discovered the mustard seeds where his balls are supposed to be. Lol at that idiot. Continue to lose Lions. Stupid of me to play Stafford tonight. I feel like George Bush. Fool me once....

 
Maybe we could start a 12 step program on how to de-Lionize ourselves?

Legendary stuff last night. Right up there with Tom Dempsey, Monte praying, Favre-to-Sharpe, Lomas' guarantee, Cowboys PI, Seahawks batted ball. Hell, maybe worse than of them. ####### #SameOldLions

They actually did a lot right last night, but the coaches blew it. Unreal.

 
QUARTERBACKS: B+

Matthew Stafford has been better, but it was another efficient outing for the Lions quarterback. He finished with a passer rating north of 100 after completing 23 of his 35 throws for 220 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

His biggest throw came in crunch time. When Detroit desperately needed a completion, he fired a laser to TJ Jones to pick up a first down that should have sealed the win.

Stafford also made a couple more big plays with his feet, picking up 10 and 12 yards on his two carries.

RUNNING BACKS: B

Ameer Abdullah continues to flash, bursting up the middle for his longest run of the season, a 36-yarder during a touchdown drive. He finished with a healthy 67 yards on 13 carries.

Joique Bell was less effective, especially when the Lions looked to him to help run out the clock. At least he didn't fumble, but five yards on eight carries is rough.

Theo Riddick had a quiet game, by his recent standards. He finished the night with five grabs for 27 yards.

WIDE RECEIVERS: B

Calvin Johnson dropped a pass early in the game that would have given the Lions a first-and-goal well inside the red zone. But he made up for it with an incredible one-handed, toe-dragging scoring reception near the sideline.

Golden Tate had some communication issues with Stafford, but straightened them out in the second half and finished with a team-high eight receptions.

And we already noted the Jones' grab late in the game, but it was impressive the young receiver was able to pull in the rocket away from his body.

TIGHT ENDS: C

A quiet night from the tight ends, with Eric Ebron catching the only two passes for the group, totaling nine yards. The good news is one went for a touchdown. Brandon Pettigrew was not targeted.

OFFENSIVE LINE: C-

Throughout the first half, the line was stellar, opening some nice holes for the backs while giving Stafford a nice pocket and plenty of time to work with on his drop backs. Things came undone in the third quarter when Riley Reiff badly whiffed while blocking Julius Peppers, leading to Stafford being strip sacked, which the Packers recovered.

When right tackle Michael Ola went down, things turned sharper south. Backup LaAdrian Waddle got called for two penalties in his limited snaps.

DEFENSIVE LINE: B+

Devin Taylor's face mask penalty that allowed the Hail Mary ending, marred an impressive night for the third-year defensive end, who recorded two sacks in the first half. The call, which was controversial, was the correct one. Taylor's thumb got inside Rodger's mask and caused the helmet to twist.

Ezekiel Ansah also continued to rack up the sacks, adding another one to his NFC-leading total.

As a group, the unit also shut down the Packers ground game, holding the backs to 41 yards on 19 carries. Ansah did lose contain though on a 17-yard Aaron Rodgers scramble for a touchdown in the final quarter.

LINEBACKERS: B

Stephen Tulloch had a strong night in run support and Tahir Whitehead added two tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Josh Bynes was in coverage on Rodgers' first touchdown pass, but his decent positioning was trumped by the quarterback's perfect throw.

The Packers did have some success with screen passes, one of which was wiped out by a face mask penalty.

DEFENSIVE BACKS: C+

Isa Abdul-Quddus delivered a complete game. He racked up 11 tackles, two behind the line of scrimmage, a pass breakup and two hits on Rodgers. The safety did get hit with a lengthy pass interference call when he ran into the receiver on an underthrown ball.

Glover Quin came into the contest with a banged-up ankle, but managed to intercept an errant pass. Cornerback Darius Slay didn't give up much of anything on the outside.

Nevin Lawson and Quandre Diggs weren't perfect, but largely held their own.

The whole group does get docked, a full letter grade, for not being able to knock down the Hail Mary pass at the end.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A-

Matt Prater was still battling a serious sinus infection, but managed to knock down all three of his field-goal attempts including a long of 51. Punter Sam Martin was also solid, with a net of 45.7 yards on his boots.

The coverage units were effective, but the Lions return game didn't do much of anything.

COACHING: D

The Lions' game plan was solid, on both sides of the ball. But the offense turtled up late in the game, handing it off to Bell three straight times and giving the Packers one last shot with the ball.

On the Hail Mary throw, Caldwell and Austin put out a defense more worried about the hook-and-ladder instead of the bomb. That's why Calvin Johnson remained on the sideline, which proved to be the wrong decision with no one big enough to contend with tight end Richard Rodgers at the goal line.

To answer [icon]. it's because dumb#### expected them to run the jailbreak lateral play for the second time in a row. Calvin plays on the Hail Mary, they have a personnel package for jailbreak.

@BroncoFreak_2K3 - exactly, right? Two guys on the 40 doing nothing made it 11 on 9. Six guys in the end zone all 4-7 yards beyond the GL, NONE of them over 6'2". Tallest guy on that end of the field uncovered has no one within 40 feet as he's tracking back while lining up the punt height pass.

1) We could have had 8 guys back instead of 6, 2) Calvin practices the Hail Mary every week. If you have the wrong package in and they do jailbreak, WGAF? You've got eight guys coming out the end zone to make the tackle.

So stupid on so many levels.

 
Gotcha. I didn't know the scoop. Just watching it live I was thinking two things:
1) Why are all the detroit guys behind the GB guys... gave them position on the ball and got boxed out.
2) Where the hell is megatron.... dude can elevate to 14' if needed to catch/swat that ####?!

 
This was such a typical Caldwell/SOL loss. We always seem to end up with coaches who get the deer in the headlight look at the most pivotal moments.

This team has/had talent and yet, the coaches still do not. It will cost them all their jobs as Marth Vader cleans house and the carousel continues to spin. Cue the music :dootdootdoodadadadadootdoota:

"Hindsight is 20/20," said every bad coach ever.

The game reminded me of the Packers/Seahawks NFC championship game. Just like Caldwell, McCarthy blew that one by not stepping on the throat of the Hawks when he had the chance. But even with the benefit of hindsight, some of these coaches just keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. They just can't help themselves. McCarthy and Caldwell were both horrible in this game. Rodgers bailed out one and sunk the other.

Ironically, all four of the NFL Championship Games the Lions played in 1952-57 were against the Cleveland Browns. Those two teams won six of the eight Championships between 1950 and 1957. Since, then, only the Browns 1964 title.

Caldwell is turning into a first class doosh. Before his weekly presser he announced that he would take no comments about Thursday game and only take question about things moving forward. Then he pulled a Marshawn Lynch when asked about the Packer game. Repeating over and over "Will only take question about things moving forward" "Will only take questions about things moving forward"

Can`t wait until they fire this clown.

The Lions website didn't post his opening remarks where he said he doesn't want to talk about Fail Mary. The "I'll answer any questions except not going back" segment is around 5:00.

My favorite part was his 3rd Quarter Report. The Lions just finished Q3 at 3-1 and they're looking forward to a strong Q4.

  • Great leader of individuals throughout the week
  • Able to construct/help construct an effective game plan
  • When the bullets start flying, radip decision making with time management, quick decision play calls, adjustments - he flounders, and that's his biggest weakness
  • In 29 games as HC of the Lions, his strategic blunders in game have cost them 4-5 games
The good news takeaway from Fail Mary is I think that's the nail in the coffin. It wipes out all the good will of winning three straight, and negates anything that happens over the last 25% of the season.
