BACK IN THE FOLD

Receiver Josh Gordon was reinstated to the NFL on Friday afternoon, and Pettine saw him Saturday at Browns headquarters.

Gordon, whose suspension was reduced from at least a season to 10 games, is allowed to train and lift weights in the facility and attend meetings. He can’t go to practice or games.

“I talked with him briefly, wasn’t really a formal meeting,” Pettine said. “He’s had more of those with Ray (Farmer, general manager). I did have a good visit with him. We’ll get a plan in place for him and be ready to move forward.”

Gordon is serving his second suspension in two seasons for violating the substance abuse policy. He’s scheduled to be eligible to return to action Nov. 23 against Atlanta.

“To have a guy who was out for the year all of a sudden you get a chance to get him back at the end, it’s a big plus for us, a player of his ability,” Pettine said. “But at the same time, I think it’s important we’re just not talking about Josh as a player. We’re talking about the person and making sure that we’re well aware of the human element here.

“It’s not just, hey, we have a good player back for six games. We talk about building long-term, sustained success here, and making sure that we’re getting him everything he needs is just as big a part of it as what he can do on the field for us.”

Kind of surprised that no one discussed the news from earlier today that Gordon will be allowed to train at the facility. Maybe that's a recap of what was said before, but he will be in meetings and in the locker room. And HC is giving out good vibes.

Can someone reach out to Soulfly? I’m more worried about him than I Gordon.

Kind of ironic isn't it? NFL tells Gordon to lay off the weed and he can't. Owner of this website tells you to lay off your hot takes and you can't.

You've never seen my wife reach for the last pizza slice.

ESPN Magazine interview with Gordon

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/page/hotread141001/cleveland-browns-wide-receiver-josh-gordon-opens-suspension-drug-tests

Tidbits I found interesting: claims he has had 180 drug tests since 2012, his older brother's twitter handle is @rastagordon713, those around him think he may be loyal to bad influences to a fault (may be old news), sounds like he was never completely aware of what stage of the testing program he was in, thinks he was singled out during the pre-employment testing, and he is still claiming the most recent test was second hand smoke.

Also of note from the article:

The new substance abuse policy's threshold for a positive marijuana test is 35 nanograms, which should eliminate the possibility that secondhand smoke would trigger a positive test. And according to a person familiar with the negotiations, players in Stage 3 will be eligible for review by clinicians and can possibly be discharged after 24 months. Under the old rules, Gordon faced Stage 3 status for the rest of his career.

Not sure if that's old news, but the claim is that guys can now get out of stage 3, although it doesn't say what stage they'd go back to.

he's pretty much just been jobbed over and over and over again

i see no reason he should accept any responsibility...honestly...i'll wager most of us would test positive for second hand weed right now, it is literally everywhere

i just wish the ncaa, the nfl, and the law would leave this kid alone, he's a good guy

Then you don't know enough about second hand smoke.

I'm hoping your sarcasm meter is off.

I love seeing this thread. haha. If he goes to stage 2, he could be reinstated and play for us! *the dream*

how are owners feeling now? I'm not panicking, but I am feeling this dead roster spot as I maneuver around.

I have him in 3 leagues. Two I'm 2-2 but one I'm 1-3. So far it's only rough in the 1-3 league but if I go 1-4 it's gonna be real tough to hold on. Will he play week 10 or week 12?

I am the 3rd highest scorer in league, Gordon is scheduled to play the final 5 games of the season for me, 3 of those are inter-div games which are about twice as important as non div games and the final 2 are playoff games, so yeah I am looking forward to getting him back as my WRs are kinda weak aside from A.J Green (Start3WR).

Never thought this would be an issue with me. But it is. Not because of bye-weeks but because of injuries to others on the roster. Keeping the faith....hasn't cost me a win yet but that will change everything. What is the breaking point?

If he doesn't play until week 12, I think he's pretty droppable unless you are 4-0... you have to see how he plays day one and he's basically only good for weeks 13-16 which are the most crucial.

High risk/high reward. If he comes back week 10, I would probably hold though... gives you more time to feel things out. I ended up dropping him to pick up J Cutler a few weeks ago.

I think there's too many variables in leagues to suggest when and where he's droppable. He has the potential to be a PPG monster when PPG matters the most.

I know alot of leagues are different, but what is the standard bench for most?

In our standard ESPN league, we have 7 bench spots. Having Josh being one of them definitely hurts a little bit, but its not the end of the world.

6 bench spots in Yahoo standard, but mine's a 14-teamer so it doesn't hurt as much keeping him around.

Im just curious, if you would cry more w/ Josh on the wire or another Team?

There is no guarantees on production, colder weather could make for an awesome run-game..

Ive learned to limit attempts to cover for TE injurys (sooner a drop happens, possibly the better)

I do not carry more than three QB's. I believe it was Jeff who covered having a player who may only play one game, should probably not be rostered. Four QB's, while even playing Two is too much (imho)

Its not a rule or anything, but I try to limit my Team too having two homerun hitters. I know its tough to drop a possible TD guy, but if ya got a shot at a full time guy? I will lean towards the homerun..

Most all of us have to determine where we want to have strength and/or weakness's. For example I started out the Season w a few key IDP loss's before the Draft. I dunno if its odds related, but I have no backups for IDP rostered, meaning every player is playing (or I need to use the Wire) On the bright side this has allowed me to roster eight extra players on Offense..

Im hoping to compete, and possibly have RB's ready to propel my Team in the Playoffs..

Personally I believe Josh should and will be starting for my Team this Season, which means hes not eligible for cutting loose/trading etc. But the cost could be a bit excessive depending upon how other players on my Team perform, or even WW players. Id like to have HAHA rostered!

Basically the costs could involve dropping say Taliaferro or perhaps Beckham..

So while I do understand your "pain", Im not really hearing it..

Another roster spot would be nice but I'm doing alright so far. Sitting at 2-2, second in the division.

Gotta make it to the playoffs to have this worth it.

This is true but it isn't an "all or nothing" proposition. With each passing week 1/11th of his suspension is being "amortized" and he is becoming more valuable - if not to put you over the top, then someone else.

For rostering him to be "worth it," you don't have to be winning your games or even make the playoffs. Nothing is guaranteed. Gordon just has to be worth more than anyone you can get on the waiver wire. As long as he deserves the spot it's a decent gamble, whether it pays off or not.

In one league (14 teams) there's nobody of consequence on the waiver wire. Teams do a good job of sniffing out value, so I feel comfortable keeping him over the slim pickings out there.

In another (12 teams) somebody dropped Ellington. I have no idea why, but they did. Had no problem dropping Gordon for him. I had a definite need for RB depth. That kind of boost today was worth sacrificing a potential boost tomorrow.

So it depends on your league. I agree it gets easier with each passing week. But I would consider trading him to a stacked 4-0 team who might be thinking ahead. Always keep your options open.

Love this part:

Gordon owners won't have to have this looming over their heads his entire career.

I'm the only one in here posting anything of relevance

You should post more

the more you post, the relevancey factor decreases.

Free advise: Be lucky your posting in here. If ya posted too much at all in "Free For All", I would expect a tenfold loss of intelligence per post.

Lets don't forget what might be ones mans Treasure is another mans junk << A post like that in the free for all, would have ya surrounded by "junk lovers"

So yeah, If ya guys don't mind being too judgmental, its kinda appreciated. It often happens, that I think I truly have a grasp on a situation, and something from left field hits..

I personally havnt posted much, because there is a cost for some of us to Own Gordon. Im not sure any "good Info" can be found that really balances the negativism.

But Hey If ya do have something to share, theres a good chance some of us may enjoy the experience.

Please note: We probably still have non-Gordon Owner managers relishing the non-playing Time.

So people are resting their FF seasons on some pothead used-car-salesman?

lol. He's occupying a spot that 5 other guys on my bench are sitting on. Only 3 of those guys will play bye weeks. 1 is for streaming. and the other 2 are upside stash. But I do like your assumption that everyone is dependent on Gordon to make or break their team. Gordon, to me and many other owners, is not the foundation of our team, he is merely the cherry on top.

Can't wait for week 12. Hoyer is looking really good.

Gotta hope they stay in the playoff hunt though. if they have a losing streak, by the time Gordon is available, Manzier may have already neutralized him.

I don't know, didn't Johnny Football pretty much make his college career on throwing up bombs to Mike Evans?

No way I'd let go of Gordon, though in that league we have larger benches than most.

Surprisingly, with Andre Johnson, Keenan Allen, and Percy Harvin, my WRs are holding my team back.

Week 12 can't get here soon enough. I'll start him in his 1st game without thinking twice.

He did but the NFL is a different ballgame. A chuck it deep to Evans in college has a way better chance of success that in the NFL.

Not to take this in a negative direction but as someone who might be acquiring Gordon in an auction keeper league, are we aware of what his punishment would be under the new rules if he were to have another issue with drugs?

I'm also interested in this. Does anyone know the new details of the substance abuse program? How do suspensions increase? What's the new testing threshold? Anything?
