Jack Doyle needs a thread (1 Viewer)

Actually this in a sense hurts Ebron a little... a lot of that the Colts have been able to do is due to Doyle blocking. They are without a blocking TE now and unless they sign one, Ebron is going to have to block a lot more. Now they could just go FB or slide more protection, but that's going to open up Andrew Luck to more pressure
He wasn't used in that fashion when Doyle was out for 5 weeks in the middle of the season. I don't see why that would change for this stretch of Doyle's absence.

Arguably, the best stretch Ebron had all year was when Doyle was injured.

I don't see how you could expect this to hurt Ebron at all. More targets from a QB who loves throwing to TEs.

This is the Doyle thread , so I don't want to get technical about it... but what I'm saying is his usage back then can somewhat be attributed to a) having another competent TE around to block (Erik Swoopes was around those 5 weeks) b) a weaker WR core. Now the WRs thing can be marginal, but a lot of the Colts mismatches work on having multiple TEs. With Ebron as the only TE that changes the scheme a good deal. Now I would assume they get a guy off the practice squad/sign one,  but if they don't Ebron's gonna have to block some.

What I was referring to where it hurts a little is schemes where he may be out on routes he has to block. The quality of those targets will differ also (how many wide open TDs has he had on situations where they covered the wrong TE?). In my opinion his floor stabilizes but his ceiling drops a little.

They had Erik Swoopes and a decimated WR core? Also, he's the only healthy TE left on the roster... so yeah, he's going to have to block a bit.

I'm not saying Ebron will tank; getting more snaps is never bad. But don't expect him to be targeted as heavily as he was before, that's not possible.
Last I read, Alie-Cox is expected to return next week.  Not sure about what’s up with Swoope.

But I can’t see any way it “hurts Ebron a little,” like you suggested.  Ebron was getting between 22%-45% of the snaps when Doyle played, and was getting between 50%-88% of the snaps when he didn’t.  Ebron was averaging 3 targets/game when Doyle played and he averaged 8 targets/game with him out.  Unless you expect him to get less than 3 targets and play less than 22% of the snaps, the “hurts Ebron a little” comment is just wrong.

ETA-just read your most recent post; that clears it up.  Not sure I agree 100%, but I understand what you are getting at.

Ebron with a shot at being the TE1 when all is said and done this year.
Ebron could have been TE1 ROS without Doyle going on IR, problem with Ebron isn’t the total production it’s the consistency.

This could help Ebrons floor a bit but not a ton.  No way he’s the best blocking TE left on that roster.

Jack Doyle (hip) has begun "cutting."

Doyle, who is recovering from hip and kidney injuries, has been cleared for running and is starting to incorporate more "position-specific movements" into his rehab. Per Fox 59's Mike Chappell, Doyle could resume practicing by mid-June and should be a full go for training camp in two months. Doyle lost significant weight (20 pounds) during his recovery but has since gained most of it back. The seventh-year tight end has long been a favorite target of Andrew Luck, though Eric Ebron's emergence clouds his fantasy status heading into 2019.

The Indy Star's Zak Keefer reports Jack Doyle (hip) was running routes at full speed after practice Thursday.

Doyle did not participate in the offseason program as he recovered from hip surgery and a kidney injury, but it looks like he is fully on track for training camp. Doyle will likely struggle to return consistent fantasy value, but he will put a dent in Eric Ebron's usage if he is able to stay on the field.

Jack Doyle (hip, kidney) is "not rushing" his recovery.

Able to run routes at full speed during minicamp, Doyle has completely recovered from his hip injury, but he is still working back from a kidney issue which required surgery and caused him to drop 25 pounds. Training camp has been the goal for his return, but he does not want to push himself too early. "I’m happy with where I’m at and happy with the progress I’ve made," Doyle said. "It’s definitely going in the right direction, and when it’s time to get back out there, I’ll be excited to be back out there." Assuming he is able to return healthy, Doyle should put a dent in Eric Ebron's target share.

Jack Doyle (hip, kidney) returned to practice Thursday.

Doyle did not participate in the team's offseason program as he recovered from hip surgery and a kidney injury, the latter which caused him to drop 25 pounds this summer. The 29-year-old miraculously opened Colts camp with the starters on Thursday, a terrific sign for his seasonal outlook. Doyle was Indy's de facto No. 1 tight end when healthy, limiting teammate Eric Ebron to 45, 26, 21, 38 and 40 percent of the team's offensive snaps in the five games he played behind Doyle. He remains a valuable mid-round option in all formats.

Late round value pick, better line so won't block as much and Brissett loves to target TEs. Lower ceiling but floor should be like 4-5 points in non-PPR.

Jack Doyle caught 3-of-4 targets for 44 yards and a touchdown in the Colts’ Week 10 loss to the Dolphins.

Doyle got loose for a couple chunk plays on short designed passes off of play action in the first half and scored on a short one-yard touchdown after not being covered later in the second half. Still, it’ll be tough to expect consistent production here considering multiple WRs, RBs and TEs are involved in the passing game of this run-first offense. Doyle is a touchdown dependent TE2 next week regardless of if Jacoby Brissett (knee) manages to return.

Jack Doyle caught 3-of-4 targets for 28 yards in the Colts' Week 12 loss to the Texans.

With Eric Ebron fighting through an ankle issue, Doyle out-snapped his TE compatriot 46-29. Ebron still managed to win the catch and yardage battles, though, pathetically, Doyle's 28 yards were second on the team. Especially with bye weeks coming to an end, Doyle will be a barely-there TE2 for Week 13.

Colts signed Jack Doyle to a three-year contract extension.

The deal is worth $21 million in new money and can reach $24 million with incentives. It's significant money for Doyle who will be playing in his age-30 season next year. With Eric Ebron hitting free agency, Doyle should be in the top-12 tight end conversation in 2020. This week, Doyle is a locked-in TE1 with T.Y. Hilton (calf) sidelined.

Jack Doyle caught 2-of-6 targets for 27 yards in the Colts’ Week 14 loss to the Buccaneers.

Doyle had a key drop on the last drive of the game that would’ve resulted in a first down. His two catches were surprising considering he’s dominated usage with Eric Ebron (knee, IR) sidelined. Better days will be ahead for the Colts’ starting TE. Continue to treat Doyle as a TE1 in Week 15 against the Saints.

Jack Doyle believes the Colts' system is "great" for tight ends.

Doyle elaborated, "They put a lot of trust in us, a lot of responsibility and ask you to do a lot of different things." With Philip Rivers now calling the shots, there's some expectation of Doyle being slightly more involved as a pass-catcher. That's especially true following Eric Ebron's departure to Pittsburgh. Doyle finished with 488 yards on 72 targets last season, production that lands him in the middle of the TE2 mix. His ceiling is capped by his average athleticism, but he offers a higher floor than others being drafted at similar average draft positions.

Colts head coach Frank Reich said tight end would be a "really, really important dynamic" for the team's offense this year.

The history of productive tight ends in Reich's offenses bodes well for Jack Doyle, who this week returned to practice after struggling through a neck injury. No team has recorded more tight end touchdowns than the Colts over the past two seasons. And new QB Philip Rivers targeted his tight ends an NFL-high 36.3 percent of the time from 2014-2019. The team has talked up Trey Burton as a more athletic tight end who could take the place of Eric Ebron. Burton, who played under Reich in Philadelphia, will be worth monitoring in deeper leagues. He could become a fantasy starter if Doyle misses time in 2020. Doyle is going in the 13th round of fantasy drafts. He could be boring but effective for fantasy players.

Jack Doyle caught 3-of-4 targets for 49 yards in the Colts' Week 1 loss to Jacksonville.

Normally a safety blanket with minimal explosion, Doyle was oddly used as a second-level target over the middle, seeing just two more targets than Mo Alie-Cox (2/20). Philip Rivers instead depended on Parris Campbell (6/71) underneath while featuring T.Y. Hilton in his usual role down the field. Rivers targeted Indy's backfield at a whopping 44% rate in Week 1, but Doyle is still a capable red zone threat assured usage while Trey Burton remains on IR. Doyle will file in as a low-end TE2 against the Vikings next week.

Going to have to watch the game but it seemed like they wanted Doyle/Cox to clear space for the underneath guys. Really odd.

Jack Doyle (ankle, knee) did not practice Wednesday.

Doyle turned four targets into a 3-49-0 receiving line in the opening loss to the Jaguars. Parris Campbell and Nyheim Hines are really going to eat into his middle-field targets. Doyle is well off the fantasy radar outside of TE-premium formats. If he sits, Mo Alie-Cox should see more reps against the Vikings.

Sep 16, 2020, 3:48 PM ET

I think this is lazy analysis by whoever that is.  Doyle had one that was just over his hands in the first quarter that would have made his stats 4-60-1.  He will be a main redzone threat for the colts if they dont just pound it in with the running game.

Colts TE Jack Doyle (ankle) didn't practice Thursday.

That marks Doyle's second straight missed practice. Doyle caught 3-of-4 targets for 49 yards in the Colts' Week 1 loss to Jacksonville. If he misses this week's game against the Vikings, TE Mo Alie-Cox would likely play starter's snaps for Indy. Cox played 39 percent of the team's Week 1 snaps and drew two targets, catching both for 20 yards.

Colts TE Jack Doyle (ankle) remained sidelined for Friday's practice.

It's not looking good for Doyle ahead of Sunday's prime matchup against the Vikings' giving secondary. With Trey Burton still on injured reserve, the Colts would have no choice but to turn to Mo Alie-Cox and, to a lesser extent, UDFA Noah Togiai if Doyle isn't cleared. Alie-Cox isn 't the worst streamer for those desperate to fill his position late into the week.

Jack Doyle (groin) remained sidelined at Wednesday's practice.

Doyle missed Week 2, allowing Mo Alie-Cox to step in as the starter and paste the Vikings for a 5-111-0 receiving line. Alie-Cox should be on fantasy radars ahead of this week's date with the lowly Jets.

Sep 23, 2020, 4:44 PM ET

Jack Doyle (ankled) returned to Colts practice Thursday.

Doyle will undoubtedly be listed as "limited," but he now has a chance at suiting up vs. the laughingstock Jets. Doyle's biggest fantasy impact would be curbing Mo Alie-Cox's upside after MAC had a 100-yard Week 2. Doyle's status will be updated Friday.

Doyle is active
Rotoworld:

Jack Doyle (ankle) will play in Week 3 against the Jets.

Doyle will likely slide back in ahead of Mo Alie-Cox, who racked up 5/111 receiving on a 24% target share in his first career start in Week 2. Zach Pascal and Michael Pittman are also available to replace Parris Campbell (knee) for the foreseeable future.

Sep 27, 2020, 3:01 PM ET

And can they really limit Mo's work as well as he is doing?

Says desperate guy in need of TE help after injuries hit again this week.

Active ...but does anyone know if he even saw the field yesterday?
Rotoworld:

Jack Doyle wasn't targeted in Indianapolis' Week 3 win over the Jets.

Doyle actually ran 16 routes to Mo Alie-Cox's 8 but didn't record a single target in his first game back from an ankle injury. It doesn't help that Alie-Cox was able to spike production (3/50/1) with his usage. Doyle is the team's co-starter for the time being, but Alie-Cox is clearly lurking over his shoulder with impressive back-to-back performances. Fantasy players would be wise to pivot to the latter if holding Doyle in advance.

Sep 28, 2020, 1:59 PM ET

Colts TE Jack Doyle entered the league's concussion protocol.

"It's probably going to be tough for [Doyle] to be cleared," coach Frank Reich said. With a short turnaround scheduled for Thursday against the Titans, Doyle is not expected to suit up. Mo Alie-Cox out-snapped Trey Burton 35-29 on Sunday and would (surprisingly) be the pivot without Doyle given the duo's recent shakeup in usage. Note that Tennessee has allowed the 12th-most fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends this year.

Colts TE Jack Doyle (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 10 against the Titans.

Doyle will miss at least one game in the concussion protocol. He was always a longshot with the Colts playing on Thursday night. Mo Alie-Cox and Trey Burton will pick up Doyle's snaps.

Nov 11, 2020, 3:38 PM ET

Jack Doyle (concussion) is questionable for Week 11 against the Packers.

Doyle was a full participant for both Thursday and Friday's practices and will presumably get cleared from the league's protocol before kick-off. Mo Alie-Cox out-snapped and out-targeted Trey Burton against the Titans but all three tight ends will be involved (and ultimately cannibalize one another for fantasy) if Doyle is in fact available.

Jack Doyle (concussion) will play Week 11 against the Packers.

Doyle cleared concussion protocol on Saturday. When he's been healthy, the Colts have opted for the rare three-way tight end committee approach with Trey Burton, Mo Alie-Cox, and Doyle splitting routes relatively evenly. That of course makes all three forgettable TE2 plays.

Jack Doyle caught 7-of-9 targets for 70 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' Wild Card Weekend loss to the Bills.

He also caught a two-point conversion. Doyle emerged in the season's final weeks as the primary pass-catching tight end in the Colts' three-man tight end rotation. Philip Rivers ripped Buffalo's defense via the tight end on Saturday, completing 14 passes to Doyle, Mo Alie-Cox, and Trey Burton. Doyle, the ultimate dad runner, led all Indy tight ends in offensive snaps this season but was out-targeted by Trey Burton, 38 to 33. Colts tight ends were mostly unusable in fantasy this season. Doyle, 30, is signed with the Colts through 2022.

- Rotoworld

The Athletic’s Zak Keefer believes Colts TE Jack Doyle may have to be used “more in the run game.”

The Colts, who lost LT Anthony Castonzo to retirement, could have Doyle run fewer routes, with Mo Alie-Cox and rookie Kylen Granson playing larger pass game roles. Doyle’s targets were already in decline, dropping from 72 in 2019 to 33 last season. Blocking gives Doyle an edge in snaps, but the Colts' tight end rotation is likely to remain a timeshare in 2021.

He had a decent week 2. Wentz likes Tight Ends. Should he be left on the ww or could he be a surprise top 10 TE this season in PPR?

Jack Doyle caught 6-of-7 targets for 81 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' Week 12 loss to the Bucs.

With at least five targets in each of his past three games, Doyle has separated himself as the Colts' primary pass-catching tight end. Helped by a back-and-forth game script against Tampa's weak coverage unit, Doyle was second behind Michael Pittman with seven targets from Carson Wentz. He once again led Indianapolis tight ends in pass routes. Barring some unforeseen role change, Doyle has streaming appeal in 12-team leagues this week against Houston.

Nov 29, 2021, 9:43 AM ET

Jack Doyle announced his retirement from the NFL after nine seasons.

Doyle was signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2013. Tennessee released Doyle as part of final roster cuts in order to add him to their practice squad. However, Doyle was instead claimed off waivers by the Colts, and Doyle would go on to spend his entire nine-year career in Indianapolis. Doyle served primarily as quality depth and a rotational blocker for his first three seasons, before emerging as a co-starter in 2016 with tight end Dwayne Allen. Following Allen's departure in the 2016 offseason, Doyle emerged as the Colts' starting tight end and set career highs in receptions (80) and receiving yards (690). His 2017 campaign earned him a Pro Bowl selection as an injury replacement for Rob Gronkowski. Over 131 career games, Doyle finished with 295 receptions for 2,729 yards and 24 TDs. With Mo Alie-Cox a free agent, second-year tight end Kylen Granson currently sits atop the Colts' depth chart.

I knew that was coming.  Granson should take a step forward in 2022, but with a run team offense and questions at QB, that doesn't mean a whole lot.
