Packers 'back to square one' with their WRs unless ... Antonio Brown, anyone?

Allen Lazard (career stats: 36 catches, 484 yards, three touchdowns)

The Packers signed him off the Jaguars' practice squad in December 2018, and he caught one pass for 7 yards in the finale. He didn’t even make the final cut in 2019 but was added to the roster in time for the season opener. Still, he didn’t see any significant reps until the sixth game of the season -- and after Adams went down with turf toe. By the time Adams returned, the 6-foot-5 Lazard had a firm grasp on the No. 2 spot.

“Obviously he’s not Davante,” said the AFC scout, who specializes in evaluating college players for his team. “As a starting outside receiver in the NFL, I’d say he’s below that line of what you would want as a starter. Ideally, he’s a third, and on a really deep team he might be a fourth receiver... Aaron makes him better. He’s shown he’s a guy you want in your lineup, but he’s not like the guy that you want as the 1 or the 2. Those guys have to have more tools.”

Said the NFC scout, who evaluates both pro and college players for his team: “He’s a big, possession receiver. But there’s no dynamic there. I thought they made a huge mistake when they didn’t sign Anderson. That would’ve freed up Davante Adams. Davante would’ve had a bigger year, and it would’ve given Aaron that vertical threat guy. Then you could’ve worked all those other receivers in. Now you’re saying those same guys have to be your No. 2, and they’re not No. 2s. But Aaron’s going to make them quality No. 3s.”

I thought he passed the much cliched "eyeball test"as someone with potential, but I've seen that before, only to be let down eventually.

Allen Lazard is the "overwhelming favorite to be the No. 2 receiver opposite Davante Adams," according to Sports Illustrated's Bill Huber. 

With the Packers' mind boggling decision not to upgrade its wide receiver group this offseason, Lazard is in line for decent volume in the Green Bay offense. Lazard is going in the 13th round of 12-team drafts. Probably he won't be startable outside 14-and-16-team leagues, with his upside likely linked to an extended Adams absence. The Aaron Rodgers-Lazard combo was productive in 2019, as Rodgers posted his highest adjusted yards per attempt (10.39) when throwing to Lazard.

Some may disagree, or didn't see what I saw, but didn't he look very good last year?   I know his overall stats are pedestrian, but he looked good doing it IMO.

 
The Athletic's Matt Schneidman reports Allen Lazard has "solidified" the Packers’ belief that he can be the primary receiving threat behind Davante Adams.

“Everybody’s talked about Allen,” Aaron Rodgers told media on Tuesday. “And it’s pretty easy because the guy is a professional. He has worked on his game. I think for him to separate himself, he needs to continue to improve on the things he did last year.” The rave reviews occurred after Lazard hauled in a 33-yard reception and 77-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass from Rodgers at Tuesday's practice. Packers media is forbidden from speculating on first-team usage, so these tea leaves are the most we'll hear on the team's ongoing battle behind Adams. Lazard remains the favorite to produce as a WR3/FLEX option in the 13th round of fantasy drafts.

Lazard was just dropped in my 16-team leadue for one of the Jacksonville RBs. I'm considering picking him up, because of potential upside with Rodgers, but MVS has also looked good in camp. Injuries affected MVS' performance late last year, supposedly. Will Lazard remain the clear #2?

PPR or no?

My guess is MVS is still mostly the speed guy...Lazard with that big frame more of the slants and outs and some deep shots from time to time.  More likely to have more targets and receptions.

 
Allen Lazard caught 3-of-5 targets for 45 yards in the Packers' Week 2 win over the Lions.

Lazard couldn't take advantage of Davante Adams' (hamstring) second-half absence but remains an every-down player in a pass-heavy offense. Lazard finished third in targets with Aaron Jones leading the way as a receiver (68 yards) and rusher (168 yards). If Adams' injury proves more serious than it looked, Lazard would be a flex candidate in Week 3. If Adams is healthy, Lazard is nothing more than a boom-bust WR5. Green Bay heads to New Orleans for next week's contest.

Allen Lazard caught 6-of-8 targets for 146 yards and a touchdown in Week 3 against the Saints.

Lazard got behind the Saints defense for a 40-plus yard catch in the second quarter. His touchdown came later that drive on a play-action pass from Aaron Rodgers. The Saints left him wide open again for a 72-yard catch in the second half, but he was tackled at the three-yard line. Lazard’s expanded role came with Davante Adams out, but he had fewer targets than Marques Valdes-Scantling going into Sunday night. Lazard has a streamable matchup with the Falcons in Week 4 if Adams misses another game.

Regardless of the number of the targets, he did sensational and I really like his game as the No 2 with Adams out there, could easily pass 1,000 yds receiving this season, he looks smooth running around out there. 

 
Allen Lazard was absent from the portion of Packers practice open to the media on Thursday. 

Lazard's injury is unclear after he erupted for 6/146/1 vs. the Saints on Sunday evening. It is possible the Packers are simply giving him an extra day of rest ahead of Monday's showdown with the Falcons. As Lazard sits, Davante Adams (hamstring) returns, curbing Lazard's WR3 appeal for Week 4. His status will be updated no later than Friday afternoon.

ugh...guy was starting to look very nice too.

I may be picking up MVS anyway but this makes it more possible (as my insurance to Ridley missing practice today)

 
ESPN's Rob Demovsky reports Allen Lazard (core muscle) is consulting a specialist. 

Brutal. Per Demovsky, the options will be "surgery or recovery." Coming off the best outing of his career, Lazard is averaging 85 yards per game this season. One of the league's thinnest receiver corps can't afford any losses behind Davante Adams, who himself is working his way back from a hamstring issue. Even in a best-case scenario, it does not sound like Lazard will be available for Monday's game against the Falcons.

That's a bummer...guy in my league has JuJu out and was going to roll with Lazard and looked like a good move...

MVS isn't all that good, What else do they have in Green Bay?

I am a big fan of Lazard, just disappointed for him, seems to have such a positive attitude.

Well that escalated quickly. Lazard will undoubtedly be stashed on injured reserve, and is probably looking at something in the 4-6 week range for his recovery. 6-8 weeks is also possible. It's a big blow for a Packers offense still direly lacking for weapons behind Davante Adams in the passing game. The pressure is once again upped on Marquez Valdes-Scantling, while the Pack's tight end group is going to have to provide more receptions. Lazard is worth keeping around if you can spare the injured reserve spot, but he can be dropped in leagues without I.R. designations. We simply don't know how long it will be, while Lazard's effectiveness upon his return will be in question.

So one of these says he is consulting a specialist and then next we are told he ALREADY HAD SURGERY earlier in the week...WTH?!

Packers placed WR Allen Lazard (core muscle surgery) on injured reserve.

Lazard is expected to miss somewhere between 4-8 weeks after suffering a core muscle injury Sunday night and undergoing surgery Thursday afternoon. With Davante Adams (hamstring) considered questionable for Monday, all available work will presumably trickle down to Marquez Valdes-Scantling and TE Robert Tonyan. Lazard is worth keeping around on fantasy rosters with IR spots, but he can be cut loose if league rules force him to be stashed on the end of active benches.

Allen Lazard (core muscle surgery) began rehab work on Thursday. 

Lazard was slapped with a 4-8 week timeline after going under the knife in late September. A Sunday return against the Texans isn't going to happen, but Week 8 vs. the Vikings is at least now theoretically possible. Week 9 in San Francisco is probably the best bet, though that is a short-week Thursday tilt.

Allen Lazard (core muscle surgery) practiced for the second consecutive day on Thursday. 

The Packers don't have to list Lazard's status since he is still on injured reserve, but his 21-day window to return has been activated. Sunday's game against the Vikings is at least a possibility, but the Packers' ever-conservative medical staff could just be getting Lazard ready with an eye toward suiting up in Week 9. If Lazard gets the go-ahead, he will be a low-floor WR4 for Week 8.

Allen Lazard posted on social media that he is on the team's flight to Thursday's Week 9 game against the 49ers.

Lazard is still in his window to be activated off injured reserve, so no practice status has been announced. We do know he participated last Thursday but have not seen updates since, so do not take this report as fact. There is a chance he is activated prior to kickoff on Thursday and could immediately be considered a FLEX option, as the Packers are heavy favorites facing off against an injury-riddled 49ers team.

What's the prognosis this week?

He's floating on my waiver wire and I like him plenty but he would also have to leap frog Tee Higgins for me to ever start him so it's not urgent, but what do folks see here?

Health, I think he steps in behind Adams as the WR2. Given how much Rodgers is chucking it these days, I think he's a guy to have rostered.
