When I was a kid we had a house that had a bunch of fruit trees, including a huge avocado tree, which is where my love of them comes from. We had a German shepherd that used to eat the over ripe ones that would fall from the tree, leaving nothing but empty skins and pits. Not in San Diego. I have seasonal access to fresh grown Zutano, Fuerte, Bacon, Gwen, Pinkerton, Reed and haas so pretty much year round fresh avocado access. All the supermarkets, farmers markets, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, etc. near where I live sell avocados, some multiple kinds of avocados. I think they're from Mexico or CA.I'd like to know what kind of avocados folks are getting fresh and where from? My experience was when we lived in Panama, and I've never seen trees in the US though I understand there are some Southwest. Started to plant a couple fruit trees this spring since our weather patterns now have us in zone 8--but from what I read that's still too prone to frost to suit either limes or oranges. I'm all over it if someone can point me to cooler weather choices. Right now all I've got in the way of trees are cherries, grapes, one young plum, and a couple figs.
My local stores have Hass and ones that are usually labled "Florida avocado". Not sure what type the Florida ones are, but theyre like 3-4 times the size of Hass and have smooth green skin versus the rough, dark skin of the Hass. I tried a Florida variety once, but I dont think it was ripe. It was way firmer than any Id ever had and didnt have as much flavor. West Palm Beach FL. Next time your at a home depot or Lowes check out the outdoor section. Chances are if they sell them they will grow in your area.where do you live? I can taste even a pinch of the stuff and it ruins a dish. Most recipes don't settle for a pinch though, they use bunches of the crap. I have gotten entire meals free at nice restaurants when the chef insists on putting in cilantro after I've told the waitperson that if I can't get it without cilantro I'll order something else. I've read parsley or chervil can be substituted for cilantro. Never had chervil but parsley is good.I wonder what percentage of the population tastes it differently. I'm in for that! Been grilling a lot of our vegetables lately as they come in out of the gardens. Leftover grilled corn w/lunch today. Rohn--I know the Supermarkets and some are good it's just hit or miss like everything else. Straight off the tree is the ultimate though. I'm with you on the Florida versions; had better luck with the Hass. Dunno any others and no idea of that we got in Panama since I was young. To weigh in on the cilantro debate--that's a taste that's acquired imo, and needs to be used sparingly if at all. Good when it doesn't stand out.I love to grill them. Cut them half, remove the seed, coat with olive oil and lime, grill. Squeeze more lime when done grilling than I like to fill in the middle with something like sour cream or salsa. Easy and delicious.
