Coach Frank Reich (1 Viewer)

Bench Version 3 of Let's Bring in a random quarterback. Check.
Wait one week. Fire offensive coordinator. Check.
Wait one week. Fire head coach. Check.

Tune in next week for the announcement of the Munich Colts.

What a tool.

Overreaction? I think not since he's in his 5th season and has 1 playoff win to show for it.

Pretty sure that's more than enough time to do much better. Team is also regressing, especially offensively. Changes needed to be made, and firing the OC was not the only fix.
Then they should have fired him in the offseason. What is to be gained by doing it now?

Ultimately the problem is ownership. I've never been a huge Reich fan, I've always thought he was grossly overrated and got WAY too much credit for the Eagles Super Bowl win. But in a season where they've been missing their best offensive player, some OL starters, and their best defensive player for almost the entire year, it just seems a little pointless to fire Reich to me.
They looked strong at times last year and were supposed to be a QB away (Matt Ryan). But a lot of players got hurt, the OL is a mess, and the guys they have filling in don't appear to be NFL level. Not sure it's the coaches fault some key pieces got injured and their high priced, previously gold standard of OL play no longer resembles that now. But that's why they didn't fire him last season . . . they were banking on being serious contenders for the AFC South this year.

This is going to be the greatest train wreck in recent sports history.

I think that is the intention...they are tanking.
Suck for more luck?

Or whatever rhymes with Young, Stroud or whoever else they would want…they did a year with Curtis Painter…they know how to tank.
Dung for Young
Not proud for Stroud
Levis may go before Young. What rhyme for him?

Not sure if this is just the Colts thread now but Saturday said Ehlinger is still the starter. I'm sure that's coming from Irsay.

Upset us for Levis.

Not bad. All I got is "crevice for Levis".

The only thing I can find to explain this from Saturday's perspective is hubris. So much potential to tarnish his "brand" and very little real opportunity to improve it. Even if he has no delusions about turning things around or taking the job long term, there is still plenty of season left to make this a really bad idea.

Obviously hiring Saturday is out of left field, but did people witness that disaster this weekend? They gave up more sacks than they had first downs and didn't convert a single 3rd or 4th down.

Reich should have been fired last offseason, but I don't see the point in keeping him on any longer. At least this shows the players that they're trying something different, the status quo certainly wasn't going to get it done.

When you think about it, Saturday might be better as a college coach.
Watch the story about Jeff Saturday giving a pep talk before the AFC Championship game in 2006 against the Patriots, which the Colts went on to win the Super Bowl against the Bears. He borrowed the Herb Brooks speech "This is our time" from the 1980 Miracle on Ice against the Russians. Only NE jumped out to a big lead at halftime and Saturday reflects his thoughts during that game. It's actually pretty funny.

From the press conference:

“I’ll be frank, I asked Mr. Irsay, ‘Tell me why I’m a candidate you would consider in any role to do this,'” Saturday said. ” … He specifically said your leadership. I don’t have to be and I don’t pretend to be the smartest guy in the room, right? I’m here to make the guys who are really smart even better.”

Said Irsay: “We don’t build rockets to go to Mars. We’re not nuclear scientists. That is none of our jobs here. It’s very simple jobs that we do here. We cultivate winning cultures.”

If you thought, like me, that Jeff Saturday has no coaching experience, you owe him an apology. Three seasons at Hebron Christian Academy (a high school) in Georgia, where he went 20-16 from 2017-19.

BIG fan of this move.

wait what? sarcasm?

It begs the question since media are now being hired away from studios and into the role of Head Football Coach...

Is Adam Schefter a good coaching candidate?

Please tell me that Adam Schefter is not a Head Coaching candidate because I never thought he would be on the halftime show of my Monday Night Football game. They present him like he's Jimmy Johnson on FOX. Why not throw his name in the hat for potential mid season replacements? It could help teams tank for the next season. Imagine even a 1-2 week gig for him at the end of year.

I think most of you know I have strong disdain for the amount of privileges this turkey gets for breaking news on his social media, news that would filter into regular places, he just jumps it a few minutes but he himself is not the news or creating it for that matter, he's simply a reporter and knows NOTHING about Xs and Os. When he chimes in or adds input on these pregame and halftime shows it is truly insulting to NFL fans that crave good analysis. I'm not interested in what he thinks the team is planning in the war rooms, it's usually way off base or a 180 from things that Bill Belichick is likely thinking about.
I can't stand Schefter either but I don't see how he is germane to the discussion at hand in this thread.

I dislike the Colts, Senior and Junior Irsay, the cult of Chris Ballard. Big fan of this move, I actively root against the Colts.

That entire Athletic piece is worth reading, it's just Irsay demonstrating the hubris of the inherited wealthy.

They pulled Jeff Satruday out of the studio and he has as much NFL coaching experience as Schefter

-I'm trying to make a point that the hiring of Saturday is a circus and if we are going to have a circus, let's get serious and hire some real clowns
-The other point is Adam Schefter has no business sitting in studio and anyone who watches him is complicit in supporting his platform and advancing him further into the NFL. Before that happens, i wanted to clear the air and pose the question because as ridiculous as it sounds, I never thought I would be looking at a Twitter/Social Media figurehead in my living room on the leadup to kickoffs. These guys get enough air time on Sportscenter and the other shows. For whatever reason, Schefter usually is the 1st to break news and then the other big talking heads are seconds behind him. I don't need it on my TV screen and him sitting there while he is looking at his phone takes the cake for me. And then he wants to tell people what the front office plans are or what the Miami Dolphins should do like he sits in on the Board Meetings. These 32 owners and many GMs hate his guts, not sure why NFL fans seem to gobble him up.

Not often you see a hiring press conference in which the owner, GM, and HC bring adjectives like “fully capable”.

Think it's the 1st one up top, Irsay sounds pretty incoherent, his thoughts don't line up well.

The fans can see the writing on the wall and understand, they know it's about tanking at this point.
-"Interview process at the end of season" sounds like everyone knows this is just temporary and to try and have a party while they are losing

"Drinking from a fire hydrant"
Jeff Saturday

This is the money quote, this is the one that should make Colts fans nervous. His response to questions about the reasoning is to point to his trophy case (from this arbitrary timeline he selected).
I thought you were going to say "because he clearly doesn't know what quartile means" or he's bad at math.

Panthers hired ex-Colts coach Frank Reich as head coach.

Probably the safest of this year's retread candidates, Reich arrives as the opposite of Matt Rhule. Whereas Rhule was brash and seemed to make up his "plan" as he went along, Reich was methodical in Indianapolis until owner Jim Irsay forced him to be anything but in 2022. Reich's Colts tenure had been largely successful until he finally bit off more than he could chew as a "quarterback whisperer" with first Carson Wentz then Matt Ryan. Quarterback, of course, is a crater-sized problem in Charlotte, though Reich and company will undoubtedly be tempted to take another ride on the veteran stopgap carousel with possibilities like Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr out there. They also possess the No. 9 overall pick. They could be tempted to make the move to No. 1 overall via Chicago. Reich will not bring electricity, but he will bring competence.

Interested to hear Panther fans thoughts on the hire. I always felt his Indy tenure was filled with constant reminders of Reich being a "high character" person - but none labeling him a great head coach. Doesn't feel like a difference making hire for Carolina. So . . . congrats I guess. I mean, at least it isn't Jeff Saturday.

I thought he was a terrible coach. One of the worst game preparation coaches I’ve ever seen. He never won on opening week in Indy. Also horrible play caller. Seem to always either run it on first down or short pass at the line of scrimmage that goes for no gain. His time management stunk as well.

This is just stupid, and is a step back from Wilks.

Feel like Reich is a good coach, but just ALWAYS picks the wrong QB.

His first QB decision as a HC, he chooses Brisette to be his starting QB. Flop.

Then he brings in Phillip Rivers. Flop.

Then he brings in Wentz. Flop.

Then he brings in Matt Ryan. Flop.

Then he picks Young over Stroud. While it's early, this is also looking like a bad decision.

this is one way of looking at it.

You could also make the case he’s bad at picking bosses.

Philip only played one year for the Colts, and they went 11-5. They lost in the Wildcard Round in the playoffs, but I don't consider that season a flop.

Rivers was the best season Reich ever had. I think Reich might just be a bad HC and decent OC.
