What's the verdict on french cuff shirts and cufflinks? I can't get a handle on if I'm a fan or not.I guess where I'm at right now on it is that I think they are OK when wearing a tie (or a suit) but not OK otherwise. Cufflinks while wearing jeans just looks weird to me....if need to wear a french cuff shirt with jeans than just use the standard button that's attached to the shirt as the main closure. But, overall I'm on the fence about them.
I wear them with suits quite often or dress slacks. Some people mix and match with jeans but not really my :style:

When I wear cuff links, I do typically wear them with suits. However, they can be worn with jeans if they are the right link, and if everything else is put together properly. Something vintage would work here. Admittedly, it's not something that I would do regularly, but it certainly can be done.ETA - some links in my current collection.

You look stupid. Don't wear a fedora and a v-neck t-shirt. You look gay, it's fine if thats the look you are going for but in any other case, the look failed. Not a fan of the fedora since it's not 1960 but if you are going to wear one, at least wear it with a suit.

Details Magazine (highly recommended by the way) has a section in every issue where they have top designers give their "rules of style for men". Interesting read and viewpoints on a number of topics.

3. Too much pattern is a disaster. Tropical-print shirts are for the tropics. And flip-flops are for the beach.
AMEN!!!!
Unless you have a disfigured jacked up toe from past injuries. In that case wear Judas sandals.
When Tommy Hilfiger talks PEOPLE should listen.Flip-Flops are the worst.
I think it kind of depends on where you live, because everyone in Tampa wears flip-flops / sandals. I don't wear long pants from March until late October, and only wear sneakers to the gym. My normal going out attire is either khaki, or plaid shorts & a t-shirt. I usually wear either a Guy Harvey shirt, or some surfer brand that keeps me in with the 20yo chicks. I will put on a polo for special occasions, but I can't remember the last time. These don't leave my feet. Best sandals EVER.

I think looking fashionable for guys is pretty easy.

Just stick to the classics, don't try too hard to be stylish. Don't try to dress like Justin Timberlake because you're not him and he would look stupid if he was any other guy wearing exactly what he wears.

For jeans, bootcut, straight, relaxed etc are all fine, make sure they fit decently, not too baggy and you are in the clear. Don't buy skinny jeans, they look stupid and are for emo queers.

For pants, khahki pants without pleats are always good. Don't wear cargo pants unless you are doing a military mission, hiking or yardwork.

For shirts, polos are fine, just have nothing to in your design. Button ups are good, I usually keep any patterns or stripes minimal and like solid colors. Don't want to wear a white and red vertical striped shirt and look like a barbershop pole.

For t-shirts, usually the less complicated the better. Steer clear of Ed Hardy, Affliction or Tapout shirts, if you don't want to look like a tool. A simple polo t-shirt with the horse on it is usually pretty good. If you want designs, make sure they aren't obnoxious. Don't wear an American Eagle or Old Navy Graphic T that says Bronx, NY Intramural Boxing Champion or anything like that.

Finally shoes, for casual shoes, just have a pair of normal sneakers for athletic needs and comfortability and if I want to be casual without being dressy, I have a pair of Sperrys which go good with anything from jeans to khakis to shorts.

I am not the don of fashion or anything and don't try to be. I have worked in clothing stores so I have a decent understanding of style and think these are some of the ways to look pretty good without trying dress like one of the dudes of Project Runway or something.

this is all good advice for the average FBG

There really is no reason to where anything but flip flops.

Sweet hat... did you get it here??Seriously, you do see the difference between that floppy thing you're wearing and the other pictures that you linked to, right?

Pumas are a good shoe to wear with shorts. But if you have a shoe size bigger than 12. You look like you have clown feet.
I wear 11 so I don't know about that but I've always thought they made my feet look smaller.
There are different styles of Puma shoes. These types can definitely make your feet look like skis if you're pushing size 12+. They are also very narrow, so if you have wider feet stay away.

This style is more versatile with any size foot.

shrug: I've got one of each and they both look great with shorts.

The guys in the other pictures don't look like complete idiots?

So I may take on the duty of coaching a local little league baseball team. I want a good look. I'm thinking about taking it back rocking Bike shorts for every game. What do you guys think. May grow a mustache as well for kicks. This is purely for laughs but I'm sure all the hot soccer moms will love it.

Growing the moustache might be a little much.Tight Bike shorts and white tube socks with 2 stripes matching the color of the shorts (and pulled up to mid-calf). :coffee:

BTW, no more pics to Brad Pitt doing anything. That shows nothing.

Cover of Wired magazine this month says it best. Article on "rules". Cover shot has a pic of Brad Pitt wearing a Blue Tooth ear piece with the caption, "He can barely pull it off. And you are not him".

What about Beckham?http://towleroad.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c...43af1970c-800wi

Either way, both got paid to wear this thing in a photo shoot. Doubt that either would be caught dead with one of these in their ear in public, and if they did, they would look like just as big of tools as Joe Shmoe walking down the street with one on.

Not everyone can pull it off but it works sometimes. J
Ouch. :lmao: offdee, will you be discussing eyewear? I really like the glasses you're wearing in the pictures, but please tell me that you actually need the glasses and are not just wearing them for :style:.

Yep, I'm a contact wearer so they are legit :goggles:

I think I have 4 pictures of myself going back 2 or 3 years. Who is taking all these glamour shots of you offdizzle?
I have a small pocket sized digital camera that I basically take with me wherever I go to document life. Started doing it about 2 years ago. I have tons of pictures of me, others and daily ridiculousness of all things around me.

style is not about trying hard to look cool, trying hard to look casual/indifferent or following the latest Hollywood trends

which is a lot of what has been posted in here. it's about being confident, wearing what works for you and not trying follow every hot trend. skinny jeans, a scarf, fedora and chuck taylor's screams of trying way too hard.

I wore jeans and flip-flops to the Chicago cornhole, with a button-up shirt untucked. offdee's head would have exploded had he been there.

And while I entered the building alone, I got a goodnight kiss from one piece of quality tail, and I did NOT leave alone. :flexes:

Yes, yes he is. I read them the riot act for not inviting you. VERY disappointed. :winkwink: :nudgenudge:

Shorts question.

I'm more a fan of the court shoe style http://www.zappos.com/product/7206799/color/151 over the other style that seems more like a race car driving shoe.

Question though. For the guys that wear these with shorts, what kind of shorts and what kind of socks (if any) are you liking?

J
Khaki type shorts (no cargo pockets or very streamlined cargo pockets that don't bell out from the side of the leg). Length: mid knee cap. Size: a size bigger than you'd normally wear your pants (so a little more baggier and casual).Socks: either no socks or the very short ones that stay below the ankle joint bone (goal is to have as little sock showing as possible). Color: white.

I picked up these kicks this weekend. Should look great with both shorts and jeans.http://www.kicksonfire.com/2008/05/14/nike...ed-white-black/
Yes. Stan Smiths are nostalgic for me but pretty much the same thing. http://www.zappos.com/product/7529249/color/18837J

Picked up a new pair of APC raw selvage jeans this weekend.....my first pair of raw denim type of jeans.

http://images.andale.com/f2/110/104/635251...81_P1010029.JPG

Anyways, the guy that owns this boutique type clothing place was really passionate about denim so we sat and talked for a good 30 minutes and he gave me all kinds of great insight into the break in process to these types of jeans, how to order a size smaller than what you normally wear because they will stretch out, and was adament to hold off on washing these things until as long as possible as that will give them the most "character" down the line.

I asked about the times that I'd wear these out to places with cigarette smoke and would have to wash them and he gave me this little genius tidbit for all clothing...

wrap it up in a brown paper bag and put it in your freezer overnight. This will kill the bacteria that makes them smell and be fresh as new.

If they aren't covered in dirt and scuffs from all the past use you should be good to go with those.
