All right here it goes.  Bear in mind its probably been 4 years since I golfed down there.

Anyway - APril is a bit tough weather wise - could be cold and raining.  A sweet spot is mid - late May before Memorial day if possible.  Still could have bad weather but its a little warmer.

Pam's is a good place to start with booking packages.  As far as places to stay - there are tons.   We actually rent a house thats about 2 miles inland - yeah no bars near by or anything but its quiet and if you want to head to the strip its easy.

Depending on the route - one course worth playing on the way down is Heritage SHores.   Cheap and always in really good shape, nice course for a practice round on the drive

Baywood Greens (another to play on the way down, really really really nice course)

My ranking of courses while staying

Bayside - A tough tough really nice golf course (Jack Nicklaus course) - we get a house very close to here.

Lighthouse Sound - really really challenging and nice course.

River Run - nice course - pro shop were ##### last time we played there so be stopped going.

Rum Pointe -  pretty easy if its not windy.  Of the 10 or so time Ive played there it wasnt windy once (get there early for homemade Orange Crushes in the bar)

the rest of the courses I dont remember enough about or never played.

Eagles Landing - decent course from what I remember

War Admiral and Glenn Riddle (short and targety if I recall) - was in ok shape - Wasn't a fan in general but ok courses.

I hate Bear Trap fwiw.

I'm sure there are some newer courses I haven't played or some of these  aren't as nice as before but if I go I try to play one of Bayside, Lighthouse sound if possible (with Baywood another but only played there a couple times)

we definitely stayed here once

But it depends on what you are looking to do

Good Luck

Lighthouse Sound and Rum Pointe were two I remember on our list.  Not too worried about night life because we tend to be golfing the whole time.  And by the time the sun sets, everyone is ready to get some rest for the next early morning tee time.

I love Bayside.   It is tough

got to go to the Safeway Open for the final round yesterday. a few thoughts:

- great place to see a PGA event. course is relatively flat so walking around is easy. there weren't as many "big names" there besides Thomas, Scott, DeChambeau and a few others, so crowds weren't bad at all and it was easy to be right up against the ropes and get good views.

- speaking of DeChambeau: he's kinda yoked. i mean, guy's forearms are as big as his biceps. also, he's a complete redass which is kinda fun to watch. and he takes forevah to play. his group was at least a hole-and-a-half behind by the time they teed off on #17.

- due to the small(er) crowds, there wasn't as much shouting from the gallery besides a few "Ripper Magoo!" off the tee for Champ.

- speaking of Champ: helluva story on that guy. sorry about his Pops, and glad he got that win. the drive he hit on #18 was a monster into the wind.

- story: we're standing on the left of #16 green (182 with wind helping). bunker left, water right, and a pin up front on a deep green. Snedeker is on the tee - one of my favorite guys, plays really fast...no messing around - and he pulls one left behind where we were standing. ball is a little beyond pin-high, and in some grass that's been trampled by spectators. not the worst lie, but he's short-sided with the bunker between him and the green. it's probably a 25 yard shot, and he and his caddie are talking about a flop that lands on the collar of the green (thick grass) and then trickles on to get anywhere near the hole to save par. he takes about 5 seconds over the ball and flops it short into the bunker and it's a fried egg. "You gotta be ####### kidding me" he says with a smirk. hops into the bunker, blasts out to about 7' and then makes it for a bogey. just a grinder to get out of there +1.

- the lesson: i'm watching Sneds' caddie rake the bunker and it dawns on me what a crap job i must be doing while raking. this guy left it perfect, like his man wasn't even there.

I played Yocha Dehe Golf Club which is the cache creek casino golf course, HOLY #### the course is amazing. From leather seats in the golf carts to hot towels at the 18th green, the service is top class. The fairways were perfect and the greens stayed true all day, even with some wind and sun they never got stiff (hey oh). I can't wait to go back out there and play, for $80 it's a steal as I found it nicer than presidio even though the drive is a bit further. Pro tip, if it's your first time out there then stop in the casino after and get a players card. They load it up with $25 in food credits, slot credits or gasoline credit. Yep, they have their own gas station there and you can use your players card points for gas.

I also realized that it's time for a new driver so I'll be spending part of my Saturday finding my new club.

very up and down - i played 12 times... had 2 of the worsst rounds of my life...

lost a lot of desire to playe... still ended with a 7.5 hcp.

Need to get in better shape and play more to get my fire back.

Got the chance to play a couple of locations on the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama last weekend.  Gorgeous courses and settings, definitely recommend

I haven’t hit a ball in two years after playing pretty regularly since my freshman year of high school until I was 48.

im completely healed from shoulder issues and have chosen to exclusively focus disc golf for the past year, but I’m going to go out this spring and try to put my swing and game back together piece by piece.

With the virus, I just received word that my club is delayed three weeks from opening.

However, may as well update with probably the biggest high and one of my lowest lows from last weekend. Played in a member guest as, ironically, the guest at my old course (I moved last summer). Good buddy of mine that is my partner in a lot of tourneys. He's a 4 and I'm a 9 (tending up though with the new fitted sticks). Format is five 9-hole matches in flights with top two from each flight qualifying for a mega-horse race for champship an calcutta so a bunch of dough.

First day I played the most consistent round(s) of my life. Through 27 holes I was +3 gross. Worked out to 4 birdies, 5 bogeys, 1 double, and the remainder pars. I may have had less than 40 putts overall after working on a new putting stroke indoors the few weeks prior using this new putting mat.*  During the 27 I had an edible and copious amounts of whisky. Probably hit 5-iron of the tee 1/3 of the time and especially on stroke holes. It was euphoric. I tried to be as gracious as I could to my opponents (thankfully I had somes buddies swing by and they were making it known this was an incredible day for me so sandbagging allegations were at a minimum) but I was also dancing, smiling, etc. Oddly enough my best nine came against some really competitive but awesome guys (I played softball against the one so he knew me) and I was -2 gross and amazingly we only won one up. Nonetheless, such a fun day and we had a huge cushion going into day two.

Day two my partner and I regressed a bit to the mean and got smoked in our first match. Second match was against a team we were then down 1/2 a point to so it was basically the championship match for the flight. I played very well that nine (shot my number for the day so was still happy individually) and we were up two with two to play. Opponent, one of those classic 12 handicaps in his 60s with a killer short game and a refusal to lose to guys half his age, made a sick birdie on 8. We get to 9, which is about a 160 yard par 3 with water surrounding all but the back of the green. Bad guys both appear to hit their balls in the water. It's a back pin with wind at our backs so I go gap wedge and just pure it. For 1/2 the flight I thought I holed it. Nonetheless with the wind and the greens dried out a bit it flies just over the flag and doesn't, skipping to the back fringe. Reahardless I think I'm good. However, competitive-ish 60ish guy finds his balls just out of the water. Without hesitation off go his sock and he hits a beautiful shot to about 12 feet. I putt up but leave it about 5 feet short - still nonetheless thinking I'm all right because worst case scenario we halve. Of course, older guy drains it. My five footer lips out. Costs us ~$800.

With the wind about out of our sails and me somewhat dogging my partner (again, we're good friends - he'd do the same to me) we regroup - which for me means whisky. About an hour the horse race starts and there's a good crowd coming to watch. My partner and I play great golf and cruise through to hole 7. We make bogey and I go last in the chip off and hit it to about 2 feet. At this time I realize about half the gallery had bet on us and all the guys I had boatraced day one were hooting and hollering and offering me shots of whisky. With three groups left one group makes it easy on us and goes OB off the tee. So, to 18. I tee off first on a difficult up hill 400 yard par 4. I nut one though and put my partner to 105 - a shot he can hit in his sleep. Bad guys go bunker about 200 yards out. Walking to 18 box I felt like a pro with a crowd behind me. Tons of fist-bumps after the tee ball. Guys telling me I was making them a bunch of money. At this point I should note that the remaining opponent team was a lower handicapped team (I think a 12 and a 17) so they got .5 stroke on the hole. We roll up to the ball after the other team had hit up decently out of the bunker but still had just under 100 in and my partner, who is normally spot on with wedges, grabs his 56. Back pin and back to front green so we discuss just easily hitting to the front. My heart skips a beat as he thins one deep left over the green into heavy rough above the hole. Opponents, thankfully go long too. I'm first to play. Heart is racing but I'm still confident. I line up a slight openly 54 degree. Grass catches my club slightly and my ball stops on the upper fringe maybe 20 feet above the hole - not a great leave as its pretty downhill. Opponents get their ball just onto the green but have at least 15 feet. Still feeling fine up .5 strokes. My partner goes and my heart jumps up again as he knocks it five feet by leaving me an up hiller (discussions later from him was that he was trying to make it and wanted to at worst leave me something up hill). I stupidly wasn't standing past the hole as I assumed partner would leave me a knock in. Opponent hits it to about three feet. I'm up. At that point I could feel the tiredness, the alcohol, and the pressure. I decide to "not think" and essentially rush the putt. I  miss to the right and, naturally, bad guys drain it. $2k difference to my partner and me. I didn't know the exact number, but knew it was big. Gallery let down. Buddies giving me a bunch of ####. Played maybe the best weekend of golf in my life and putted my butt off but, ultimately, missed less than ten feet of putts for $2800.

I don't know how these pros do it without losing their minds. I'be had nightmares over missing putts for just a few grand.

Oh, I apparently didn't post about it. In late December after a work bonus I treated myself and got fitted for irons, a ball, and got my putter analyzed and adjusted at a professional club fitter. Amazing experience where top notch equipment is used to work with you in the swing bay and putting studio. Basically it's appointment only with two people scheduled at a time -- one person in the track man bay and the other at the putting studio. Incredible experience that has immediately improved my game. Basically, I can swing naturally knowing that the club is fit to that swing. Only oddity is that, apparently, my natural swing is a slight cut whereas I have tried to draw my irons the past few years. Slight initial mental hurdle.

Oh, the guy doing the fitting opposite of me?

Hale Irwin.

Our club closed up today (wasn't technically opening until the first anyway but people were still playing) due to the order by the governor. But the pro essentially told us we can come over and walk the course if we want. I'm bored out of my mind right now so there's no way I'm not taking advantage if the weather is decent.

Gotten off to a good start this year despite the range not being open (I'm someone who really needs a good warmup). Been under 90 in all but one round, even on days where my driver has been wild. I'm trying out a new grip on my short chips that seems to REALLY be helping.

I know the soft/slow greens are helping me on some of them, but they're also hurting me on others and the course isn't running at all right now, (so I'm struggling a little on the longer holes)so I'm pretty darn pleased with my game.

Just hope this thing calms down before the Summer. I really think I can turn a corner this year and get close to a 10 handicap if I can just keep the ball in the fairway every day. I added a 3 wood to the bag that I'm hitting really well and I think it will really help on days when the big stick isn't cooperating.

I did the same. Fantasy Football winnings. What did you end up getting? We are in different worlds, not in handicap but distance. 160 yard gap wedge? In my dreams

Irons I got fitted for the Taylor Made P790s with the KBS C-taper 125 S+. Wedges I fit for the Taylor Made Hi-Toe in those same shafts. Oddly, he took me away from the 52-56-60 lofts to 50-54-58 and I really like the change. I could sleep with the 54 degree. Currently swing the Titleist 917D3 and associated three wood with the Tour AD 7s shafts (literally same club Spieth hit a few years ago) and it was just too pricey to fit for woods. Likely that'll be next year's purchase.

Huge difference with the putter. I have the classic Scotty Newport 1.5 and he didn't suggest I buy anything new, but he cut an inch and a half off the length and adjusted the loft and lie quite a bit. Also basically gave me a free putting lesson and changed my setup for the better big time.

very cool, did you talk to him?

Unfortunately no. Seemed pretty clear they were keeping his privacy. He finished up in the putting studio a bit before I finished irons and waited in the private lounge area. He was still doing irons when I finished up.

When I went to look at the putting analysis the guy did use Irwin’s to compare with mine. He was so much closer to and over the top of the ball than me. Was pretty cool (or humbling) to see me and him side by side on the monitor.

Nice. I went to Club Champion after going to Cool Clubs for my 3 and 5 wood and club pro for my driver. Ended up with Taylor Made SIM max irons with Nippon 950 GH shafts. Also did Callaway 54 and 58 Jaws MD5 wedges as my  Volkey wedges had no grooves left. No excuses now.  Did the SAM machine for my putter. Very cool. Didn’t switch but he did fix loft. No Hale Irwin experience but did have one of the top local instructors in who works with several pros in the other bay so felt big time.

My 50th I'm doing the 4 hour fitting...

Although my swing is awful right now so not sure what I'll do. I still have a couple years to get back to normal

So the unofficial "You're ok to walk the course" lasted about a day. We've now been told that golf is "not allowed". Apparently some folks went out yesterday and some "very angry neighbors" called and made a stink about it. Can't say I TOTALLY blame them but I really dont see the harm in someone walking the course by themselves. Not sure how that's different than taking a walk down the street, which nobody seems to have a problem with.

Whatever. #### China.

Enjoy. It's an awesome experience. If you're doing the full 4 hr. be prepared and do what you can to avoid the fatigue. I was a touch hungover for my fitting (was the day after Christmas) and was glad I didn't have to hit dozens of full swing drivers or spend two hours trying to replicate the same swing (based on swing speed and high spin rates on my irons the fitter narrowed me down very quickly on the iron and we focused instead on the narrow differences with a couple of shafts regarding their launch angles).

My BIL, who is a 3 handicap and plays a lot of golf, did the full fitting and actually had to stop before he got to the wedges due to the fatigue. I wasn't there but he says he was basically swinging for like 4 hours and got so tired that his swing detriorated so much he was producing inaccurate data.

A lot of courses in AZ have banned carts, have removed all water stations and ball washers, and are requiring that flagsticks not be removed. But they are allowing play to members (probably because they have to to remain operational). I think some public courses are open to with the same or similar restrictions - probably because they have to remain open for financial reasons.

Why would the neighbors have any say?

What do you mean they have to?
I'm assuming for financial reasons. It's peak season for most parts of AZ (i.e. the time where greens fees double or triple) and I have to imagine that the courses rely heavily on the anticipated revenue generated from this time period.

Hell if I know. Guess they thought that having people on the course goes against the social distancing guidelines? Considering that I see entire families walking up and down the street and passing each other every day, I dont really buy that.

The email we got.....

Dear Members,

I thought I would send out an email to clarify some issues that have been brought up by members and some very upset neighbors.

According to all of our allied associations' (NJPGA, NJGCSA, NJCMA, NJSGA, and MGA) communications with the Governor's office, golf is not allowed.  Whether you agree or not, *** is closed for all play.  We ask for your cooperation in this matter.  Maintenance will continue in a very basic manner and if you are seen on the course, you will be asked to leave immediately.

It is certainly bad luck that this pandemic is happening when we finally have a nice spring, but it’s important to remember that historically we haven't been fully open until April. Due to the nice weather and current turf conditions, we remain optimistic for a great 2020 golf season and are looking forward to seeing everyone when we are cleared to open the facility.

Stay well (and wash your hands),

The wife and I are going to start golfing this year. I've hacked around in the past so no pro just want to have fun and have a couple beers. I hope to golf once a week and the wife maybe once a month.

I've been to a couple golf shops before the shutdown and swung some clubs so I have a couple iron sets that felt good. What I'm wondering is there any golf websites people recommend to buy some clubs?

I've had good luck on finding good clubs on eBay.  Lots of golf shops have store fronts on ebay as well so it takes away from being worried about buying a set from a random person. Though I've had good luck buying single clubs from individuals too.

2nd Swing Golf is another decent website to buy new and used clubs.  They have a nice array of clubs, including the Mizunos you mentioned.

Also Callaway pre-owned has some decent deals from time to time.

The Mizuno 919 is the set I’m looking for if that matters.
That's a forged club with not much cavity. In other words, the sweet spot will feel amazing when you hit it but but if you're contact isn't near perfect you're getting little forgiveness. If you're just hacking around this is probably not the club for you. Also, the shaft matters almost as much if not more than the clubhead.

If you're willing to spend a bit, it's absolutely worth getting fitted for clubs. Otherwise, buy pre-owned on like ebay or 2nd swing as mentioned above or something. Gold clubs are kind of like cars in that sense.

I strongly advise against buying something new that you haven't been fitted for.

I did swing the 919 along with a few other clubs at a golf club simulator.  It’s a small sample but that was the club the stats said I hit the best.  You are right though I would like a forgiving club.  I asked about getting fitted. They guy mentioned at my height 6’2” I am standard for most clubs anyways. Of course he was trying to sell my clubs that day.

Getting fitted isnt about club length (I mean it's part of it) but its about lie angle

More to it.

I got a fitting. Bought some Titelist CBs. I tried 4 different heads. 5 different shafts. And different length/lie combos.

I'm .5° upright and 1/2” longer than standard.

Sounds like I should get fitted.  Have to see if I can find any place open. I want to hit the range.
Thanks for the help everyone

So I love to walk when I play. Better rhythm more exercise. But even carrying a light bag kills my back. Pull carts tough on our course with terrain and rough. So what the heck. Bought this bad boy from Costco. Playing with it in the yard. What a beast of a machine. Will make walking fun starting this weekend

MGI All Terrain

Only problem with fitting is they have you at your mercy. You do the fitting. #’s don’t lie. Obvious what your choice is. Then they tell you the price as you’re pulling out your credit card. $2600 for irons? Uhhh, sure.

courses are starting to open back up in the bay area, I'm booked to play in napa on wednesday :towelwave:  but I never did upgrade my push cart. :wall:  I have a ####ty 20 dollar one that will have to work for now as it seems every push cart in the US is sold out except for ebay where they are all marked up. It's unbelievable that they every online retailer is sold out 😡
