My top 100 movies: #1: E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1 Viewer)

Who "named" ET?  I would think Elliot would be too young to name him the extra terrestrial and I can't imagine his alien family would call him that.

Well done, Andy!

Might not have agreed with every movie on this list, but it was a great ride watching such an idiosyncratic yet thoughtful list revealed.  I thought you did a great job explaining and defending some of your more unusual selections.

A Bug's Life?!? Are you kidding? That movie is horrible. They rushed the production of that movie so fast, it's a piece of junk. The mere fact that you include it in your top 20, much less top 100, proves that your selections are not very good. And I'm not being contrarian. Some of the animated movies are good, but in my top 20? GTFOH!
Great movie - fantastic score, and a lovable screwup with Flick - LOVE this movie.

I have literally no hate or disagreement with anyone that likes Miller's Crossing; really I don't it's all good.

Having said that it wouldn't be in my top 100.  Just didn't do a thing for me.  Sorry.
BOO!  Love Miller's Crossing too. Maybe my favorite Coen Bros film.

Nice top-10 list.  Definitely some of my favorites in there. I could echo others on the Godfather movies but I don't blame you for leaving them off if they aren't your favorite.  A couple of movies that I know others may not like but would be in my top 10 are Princess Bride and Usual Suspects.

1.       It’s a Wonderful Life – Yeah, its sappy, but “thanks for the Wings” and then the bell ringing chokes me up every time

2.       Field of Dreams – Big baseball fan as was my father who passed away when I was 12. “Hey, dad… wanna have a catch?” Really chokes me up. (Trivia – the “dad” was dubbed in after test audiences said they wanted Ray to acknowledge that “he” was his father.

3.       Jaws – Perfect amount of tension and the chemistry between Brody, Hooper, and Quint make the movie.

4.       The Godfather – much better than part 2

5.       Rocky – I’m from Philadelphia. Movie gets better each viewing

6.       Back to the Future – Love sci –fi, especially time travel. Plus, my 20 y/o daughter loves it and we watch together all of the time.

7.       Cool Hand Luke – he’s cool… what else can you say?

8.       Die Hard – All things being equal… I’d rather be in Philadelphia

9.       Star Trek II – The Wrath of Khan. I love Star Trek and this is the best of the series.

10.   Unforgiven – “We all have it coming, kid.”

Nice job overall.

Based on this thread, I decided to watch Neverending Story with the kids tonight.  I had actually never seen it before.

Wow what a horrible movie.

This was tough to get down to 100.  Keep in mind I really haven't seen any movies the last 10 years.

Nice job overall.

Based on this thread, I decided to watch Neverending Story with the kids tonight.  I had actually never seen it before.

Wow what a horrible movie.
Yeah, that one really doesn't hold up at all.  I like the core idea of it, but it really looks like ####.

However, if you want to see a REALLY bad movie, try Neverending Story 3 with the fantastic Jack Black in it.

I'll admit, the Neverending Story is pretty kitschy.

If today is the first time ever seeing it, I can imagine it's a WTH experience.

What type of movies do you like/what are some of your favorites?
As far as older movies I like creature/sci fi movies the most. The Incredible Shrinking Man, Them!, Forbidden Plant, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Blob, The Thing from Another World. Another one that I've been meaning to watch is Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I think I've seen most of the big ones but I'm very open to anything similar.

Other than that I've only seen the big name pre-70s movies. Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Wizard of Oz, It's a Wonderful Life, 12 Angry Men, The Sound of Music, Bicycle Thieves, etc

Cool, I was just wondering if you had a favorite genre of movies (gangster, comedy, etc). If you like scary films, I really like "Night of the Hunter" . Robert Mitchum is amazing as a traveling preacher with a dark side. It is more of a thriller than a pure horror film.  Freaks is another must see. It stars real life carnival "freaks" and is a classic horror film.

Outside of scary films, there are some classics on Netflix streaming that you could check out. Laura" one of the great noir films of all time. It's got the classic 40s detective dialogue. Also stars Gene Tierney, one of the most beautiful women in film history. "Sunset Boulevard" is another noir classic and really just an all time Hollywood classic. It's a bit of a horror film as it crawls inside the mind and mansion of a twisted former silent film star that refuses to let go of the past.

ETA: speaking of noir, "The Third Man" is on TCM at 2 today. Not many better movies than that. An American author investigates the death of his friend in postwar Vienna.

Really like this list, and it is similar to my tastes (besides #1).

I do find it interesting that Lost Highway is the highest Lynch on the list.  It has been forever since I have watched that one, and it might be time to revisit it.

Why do you hate Pulp Fiction so much :(

I finally got around to watching this again last night, partly because of this thread and the fact that I've meaning to for a long time.  I last saw it in the theater with my then-girlfriend now-wife and neither of us really liked it.  I always figured I'd like it much more if I ever saw it again, but it turns out I still just don't get it.

There are a couple good scenes, but there's just not much to the movie.  It just feels so empty to me (and not in a good way) and just plain boring.

There are great scenes, but a few things drag it down for me, mainly Bruce's ####in' annoying girlfriend and QT trying to act.

Still like it overall, but it's now at least below Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, and Basterds as far as his movies go.

Best Years of Our Lives, Asphalt Jungle, Maltese Falcon are some of my all time favorite films. Also would add The Apartment, The Killing, and White Heat as must see movies.

Not in my top 5 but Man Who Would Be King is a very good movie.
