The Rise and Fall of ESPN (2 Viewers)

I've thought it for a long time.

If I had the guts, talent, and know how, I'd create an old school sports show / channel that focuses on  sports and leaves all the political crap out.

I truly think there's a huge market for this, done reasonably competently.
Bring back George Michael's SPORTS MACHINE!!! (Well, minus GM as he's gone to the afterlife.)

Funny how so many of the "ESPN is too political!" guys are also the "Rush was right about McNabb!" guys.
I don't think this is true. By viewers weaned on late 80s Chris Berman and mid-90s "The Big Show", Limbaugh was never embraced as an integral part of their coverage. There was always a "what's he doing here?" feel with Limbaugh on the set.

That said, comfortably numb brings up a great point -- that Limbaugh's hiring was a harbinger of things to come.

Just curious, does anyone here actually watch ESPN?  Is there a relevant political topic they are covering right now, if so what is it?  The kneeling thing ended what? 2 years ago?  I forget the last time I heard about it.  What are these voluminous political topics that get this offensive amount of airtime?

Is it the metoo stuff? Baylor rapey stuff?  I'm curious.
I shifted to gameday and broadcasts only years ago and even some of their broadcasts are getting difficult to sit through. We cut the cord earlier this year and intend to adjust our streaming service after the championship game, rolling without ESPN.  I can't immediately think of a reason to work it back into our service again until September.

Are you being serious? What business didn’t make a change for 25 years and stayed competitive?
You're fighting the hypothetical. The question was simply would viewers in 2018 watch 1993 ESPN programming in similar numbers to 1993?

I think RUSF18 makes a great point about ease of information access, and that affected sports programming.

...

Maybe I can refine my question(s). I think (at the moment) what I am more interested in is this: Is ESPN its best possible self right now? Are they maximizing the concept of sports (information?) programming within the realities of 2018 society? Or are they leaving ratings/dollars untapped by (intentionally?) alienating (former) viewers? And I don't mean "former viewers" as a proxy for "older, conservative viewers"

Another way of looking at it: ESPN is unquestionably (right?) a lesser cultural touchstone today than it was 20-25 years. Did that reduction in stature HAVE to happen? Change had to happen, yes ... but was there a way to remain in essentially the same cultural niche as it maintained in the '90s? Were the paths followed since the 90s the right paths when 2018 ESPN looks back and sees how they got where they are?

Or maybe they are self-satisfied, and simply don't view any of this as an issue at all?

Look, the implication of your sentiment here is that I have to give up the dream that Van Earl Wright will be back on air any time now. I just can't accept that.

Witt said a few minutes ago, after a qb draw, that Cam Newton is really good after the catch. 🤦🏻‍♂️  Maybe he meant after catching the snap.

he deserves any grief that could possibly be given to him.

He's the black Mike Francesa.  It's hard to imagine that anyone could be any more of a sociopath than him ...but SAS is right there.

The issue is that he's more judgemental than Mike of others since Mike doesn't consider much of anything else but himself.

David Carr vs Screamin A and Kellerman

it’s because I blocked them both for talking trash about our team. Those 2 clowns don’t know anything about this game. Would love to actually sit and break down film with these two on tv just to show their viewers how incompetent (lacking qualification) they are about our game.

@ufc @danawhite hey how do I challenge a couple of these clowns on tv to a fight? I think we should start a business together. Where pro athletes can challenge some of these people to an octagon fight until they give us an answer.... You don’t know me... stop lying.

Yes..say what you want but don’t question somebodies character as a man if you don’t know them. Our job as NFL athletes is to try and leave the game better for the next generations. So let’s start an octagon business to give some accountability to these kinds of people.

Raiders’ QB @derekcarrqb has asked for a UFC fight with @stephenasmith. Bovada released odds on a potential Stephen A. Smith vs. Derek Carr fight. Stephen A. Smith -130 Derek Carr -110 So there’s that.....

I'd take Derek Carr at -110 in that fight and lay my entire life savings down.

Derek Carr, my new favorite nfl player. I would pay large sums of money to see him pummel Stephen A Jerkwad.

Even PTI, which was like the last good show on ESPN, has jumped the shark.  I DVR'd it last Friday to see what they were saying about the Super Bowl and it was the 4th topic, behind three NBA topics.  That is not a misprint.  They deemed three(!!!) NBA topics as being more news-worthy to talk about than the Super Bowl on the last Friday before the game.

They’re still the last good show left but ESPN budget cuts are so bad they don’t show half of the videos/clips they used to. It’s mostly still images.

Seems like a high risk/low reward scenario for him. Not only does he risk losing his job, but he risks getting totally blackballed throughout the industry. And for what? To get his show on the air a few more times a month?

Not sure how espn is even still on the air. They have 24 hour coverage of the worst league in the world, the NBA. Outside of people in maybe 2 or 3 cities, who actually watches that garbage league.

Nice job stereotyping by SAS.  Something other anchors might get canned over.
At some point it moves past shtick and one truly has to wonder how he keeps his job.  I guess you could make an argument about his connections within the NBA but nowadays everyone has connections as the NBA is trying to be the most aggressive sport and encouraging things to get out there.  But his combativeness style, constant race undertones and just general lack of knowledge in other sports should be enough for him to hit the road.

Perfectly said. SAS is an absolute joke and has no business having a job.  He doesn't even have racial undertones anymore,  it's blatant racism and he continues to get away with it.
