5. “Walking In Memphis”- Marc Cohn (1991)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PTVbf44HMkY

Tell me are you a Christian, child? I said, Ma’am I am tonight.

I get those lyrics. Cohn describes himself as a gospel loving Jewish boy, and as one myself I know exactly what he means. This is a beautiful song, one of the best works of the 90s. It’s one of those songs that make you happy every time you hear it. If I were making up a list simply comprised of my favorite songs of all time, this would still be pretty high up there.
While this may technically fit your arbitrary conditions, I would argue that not only is this not his most remembered song, it is not his best.  Anyone who was at a wedding in the 90s most likely remembers "True Companion" as Marc's one song to name if they had to (I am at that age where I haven't been to a wedding for a while, so I'm not sure if it is every other first dance song or not anymore).

In terms of YouTube Videos, the top two view calumets are WiM totaling over 20 Million views....in third place is a Cher cover of WiM at 7.7 Million views....then we get to True Companion at 2 Million in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th are all WiM.

in Spotify, it’s even worse 84.4 M to 2.7 M views

you may have heard it at a dozenish weddings, but in terms of most remembered, it’s not even close

I have two songs that qualify under Tim RulesTM left.
It's pretty clear where he's going to float for #4, so that leaves 3 spots. If he leaves out Brandy, @SWC will hunt him down with a vengeance, so that leaves 2 spots for you (assuming neither is Brandy or the #4 song). With Tim Rules, it's hard to tell: we could end up with Derek and the Dominos in one spot and Z & E in another.

Derek and the Dominoes is a legit pick.

I could see one of the final three going wild and funky

Up next: with music based on Bach, and lyrics which reference Chaucer, there is a reason this song is considered one of the greatest of all time.

87. Mickey (Toni Basil)

76. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) (Rupert Holmes)

74. The Safety Dance (Men Without Hats)

65. Kung Fu Fighting (Carl Douglas)

59.Thunder Island (Jay Ferguson)

57. Tainted Love (Soft Cell)

56. Take On Me (A-ha)

55. Sugar Sugar (The Archies)

54. The Lion Sleeps Tonight (The Tokens)

22. 867-5309/Jenny (Tommy Tutone)

21. My Sharona (The Knack)

17. Come On Eileen (Dexy’s Midnight Runners)

7. I Melt With You (Modern English)

3. Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) (Looking Glass)
These were all staples @ my favorite college bar.

Enjoying this thread, but this is going to be Night Ranger, Part II. They just sold better album-wise than single-wise.
It’s close for me, that had another song hit 16 that still gets regular air play, but is also considerably less popular...

Single-wise, I'd agree. For me, it comes down more to them having a Gold album that reached #5 in the country five years after that song was released.

9. “Turning Japanese” -The Vapors (1980)

The Vapors are, for my money, the most undeserving one hit wonder band of all time. This is because their album, New Clear Days, was outstanding: it has no weak songs; it is one of my very favorite albums ever. Here are some of the Vapors songs I most love:

Spring Collection:

News at Ten:

Jimmie Jones:

Waiting for the Weekend:

Prisoners

I could go on. It’s that good.

The Vapors broke up in 1983 but reunited last year and put out a concert I watched on YouTube. They played all the old songs, much to the delight of a New York crowd, and I realized there are at least a few other people who love them as much as I do. I swear I cried watching that video.
New Clear Days is in my top 10 favorite albums .  It was produced by The Jam’s producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven. I can definitely hear The Jam in the album. Bunkers is my favorite song from New CD.

I’m disappointed you also hold this in high regard. smh

for cripes sake Gary Numan @90 :hot:

3. “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)”- Looking Glass (1972)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DVx8L7a3MuE

I hope @SWC will forgive me and not hurt me too badly for ranking this at #3 rather than in the top spot. #3 is pretty damn high you know. I do love this song.
number three is two off of where it should be but the fact that you put this in the top three means i have so much more for respect for you than i did when i woke up today brohan take that to the bank

2. “A Whiter Shade of Pale”- Procol Harum (1967)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb3iPP-tHdA

I’m glad Don Quixote wrote that this is going to be another Night Ranger, because I messed that up; my one regret in making this list is that I was convinced to remove “Sister Christian.”

As I have pointed out several times, I refused when I started this to stick to the rigid rules for one hit wonders; to me the most important element was this: is the song the only one that most people think of when it comes to this artist? I have no doubts about Sister Christian. I have some doubts about My Sharona. I have no doubts whatsoever about this one. Yes diehard fans of the band and a few others will mention “Conquistador”; most people have no idea what that song is. Almost everyone has heard of this one. And so I think it’s fine.

Once I decided to take this song I knew it would have to be in one of the top 3 slots. How they’re ordered is simply due to personal preference.

To quote Rick Pitino when he was the Cs coach

”it sucks and it stinks”

booooo

I’d like to give you a Moe Howard double eye poke.

Should we start posting the obvious whiffs?  'Cause you know the #1 is going be some super group collaboration, like Blind Faith's Can't Fid My Way Home.
