but i'll never forget the first thing i looked up on Amazon. was talking w my father and he told me he was starting to get phone calls in the middle of the night from stoners singing his praises. he had invented the first growlight for Sylvania in the early 60s and was subsequently asked to write the first textbook on indoor gardening. apparently, when online bookstores like Alibris & Amazon first sprang up, demand for his Lighting for Plant Growth skyrocketed among pot growers, a few of whom had sought him out for advice. When i got on Amazon, i found that copies were being offered for from $75-200. me Da, who had made only a few thousand dollars for writing it (i remember his estimate was that he made $0.45 an hour for his work), was flabbergasted

makes me seethe.

my father was part of a Sylvania Lighting Division R&D dept that developed the Grow-Lux, the purple bugzapper light, a bulb that made nylon more run-resistant that they licensed to Burlington Industries and some therapeutic lamps. these successes were what enabled Sylvania to expand their consumer electronics division and merge w General Telephone & Electronics. The R&D Dept's reward? Closed because they'd invented too many products. Only my father and one other guy survived the purge, me Da only because he designed a Product Safety Division in order to keep getting a check

I remember that Amazon actually screwed up the order and sent me the wrong order first.  My name was on the shipping label but the contents in the box were wrong.  I called customer service and was allowed to keep the wrong order and then two boxes of my original order showed up at my house before Christmas.  I gave my sister the extra books for Christmas and kept the extra Pearl Jam CD for myself.

Ironically, even though I did one of my final college papers on Amazon in 2002/3, I never bought from them again until 2012. 

I bought a plastic trumpet in 2010 for my daughter... which, coincidentally, is on my desk right now as my son dug it out yesterday to serenade me with.
