⚽ OFFICIAL GOLD CUP THREAD: United States Beats Mexico. Again. ⚽ (1 Viewer)

None of these guys are starting for the US....I mean, come on.
I’d say Turner has a shot.  Man, I would never had said this before but I think Miles has an outside shot now at starting a WCQ.  Acosta absolutely could.  But honestly, don’t care about that.  Having some of those guys being 12-20 is solid.

I said it back in the June win, but it's even more obvious now.  We're seeing a changing of the guard here.  We just beat Mexico with a B team and just like Nation's league it was the youngest squad in the tournament.  This is just the start of US dominance IMO.  I'm SO excited for the next 10 years.

Correct.  Expectations have been raised when our B team wins the Gold Cup with a win over Qatar sprinkled in.

We could literally go undefeated in the ocho and it wouldn't suprise me.

I think Acosta is going to break the Half Spaces rating record tonight.

I also want to see how much Zardes ran tonight.  It was insane for a striker to run that much.

bwahahaha...whatever

@BrianSciaretta: Best player of the tournament went to Hector Herrera.. My vote was Miles Robinson.

He’s been better than McKenzie. As much as it pains me to say that.

My son and I were just talking about this. We were at the last Gold Cup final against Mexico in Chicago which was a huge disappointment. Two incredible trophies won and I’m so excited for September.
You’ve had quite the summer - CL win, NBA title, Nations League and Gold Cup.

What a great summer for the USMNT.  Did not think we'd be raising THIS trophy, but I'll take it.  Wonderful game by this gritty group.

Thoughts on this squad going forward.

Zardes should be our starting 9 in WCQ until someone proves otherwise.  He ran his ### off today and was a nuisance for CBs all tourney long when he played.

Acosta had the tourney of a lifetime.  No idea if he can replicate it, but he's easily our backup #6 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Gregg start him in WCQ.

Hoppe played himself into the WCQ team.  As a backup striker with the ability to play wing, his skills and versatility are exactly what we need in a backup attacker.

Miles Robinson did too.  He might even be pressing for a starting role opposite Brooks.

Turner is firmly on the WCQ team.  He also entered himself into starting conversation and right now, he'd be my choice.

Gioacchini, Williamson, Sands, and Moore all played themselves into consideration for the WCQ team IMO.  Busio maybe too, although I think he struggled too much against Qatar to really grab a spot.

Lletget, Dike, Arriola all played themselves out of the WCQ squad IMO.  Lletget probably still makes it because he's Gregg's son, but I thought he had a poor tourney.

No one else really changed their status in my mind.  The rest of them are sitting basically where they were before this tourney(and that means likely outside of the WCQ squad for all but Cannon and Zimmerman who might also now be out with the performances their replacements had this tourney)

Gregg... this was his best job as USMNT coach.  The last two games he really showed aggression with his subs and they were the difference in both games.  I hope he continues to improve because it can't be doubted that these kids are really playing their ### off for him.  If he can grow as a coach along with them as a team we could have something really special happening.

Never have I wanted August to speed by like I do now.

Love that they went toe to toe w Mexico…didn’t play cynically. I would’ve been happy with a cynical but close loss…but they tried to take it them. Just wow.

So it is interesting that most people would consider Steffen the #1 right now, but he has not has a chance to make his stamp on the team the way both Horvath and Turner grabbed their chances by the throat.

He's my starter.   But it's close.

Agreed

Consideration yes, but on the outside looking in.   Williamson would make my roster.  Busio bounced back and will likely be contributing at some point.

Agree on all 3.  I really wanted Dike to be a thing, but he wasn't really...hoping there was an undisclosed injury.

This is one time (and there’s others) where I totally agree with you on the Euro soccer snob attitude.  What has Steffen ever really done for the USMNT?  Not trying to crap on him but he has no signature moment at all that I can think of.

Steffen might actually be my #3 of this group.  I'd go...

1. Turner

2.  Whore Bath

3.  Steffen

Hoppe has been good, but that shot there is how you can tell he's a striker, not a winger.  Gio or Pulisic bring that to the baseline and find a cross or a pass back into the top of the box.  That wasn't a good time to attempt a shot.
Hoppes smirk and glare at Mexico players…even more deuce similarities, along with desire to make #### happen in front of goal.

but yeah…totally agree. Even his defense- fantastic pressing high, with great decisions covering space or pushing to man. But once the us settled back in a block, he was a bit lost.

but he has to be in the next us camp and could be a sub or spot starter for injuries or rotation.

Musah v Acosta next to McKennie has to be in Berhalter's mind too.  A midfield of Weston-Acosta-Adams would be hard to break down.  Acosta's not as progressive, but he can move the ball and he's good on set pieces too.  If this summer is who Acosta is, I don't see how you can keep him off the field.

Robinson would probably be my choice as the "other" CB right now too.  If he can complement Brooks.

Not sure how you even decide with Steffan and Turner, but if it was me I'd have a short leash with Steffan.  Turner's like a drunken martial artist sometimes, but when the fight ends you look around and he's still the last one standing.

Williamson helped his cause a lot too IMO.  He'll see minutes even if he's not in the first 23.

Sands is probably the 3rd #6 and the 6th CB.  So he's probably depth at this point and I wouldn't be surprised if he's not in Qatar.

I know this is deeply unpopular, but I could easily see the top two #9s being Sarge and Pefok right now.  Zardes gives you everything he's got and runs all day, but I think the others might just be better.  Where Hoppe fits in is TBD, but he'll see minutes for sure.  Dike may be fairly far down the pecking order right now.

Lletget, Arriola, Vines are pure depth plays.

Moore and Cannon are probably locks now unless Reynolds can force his way in.  Yedlin, may actually be on the outside right now.

What a summer.
