⚽ OFFICIAL GOLD CUP THREAD: United States Beats Mexico. Again. ⚽ (1 Viewer)

I've mentally prepared for a loss tonight but really hope we at least make a game out of it.
Yep. After sitting first hand through the outperforming B team getting blown out at the Meadowlands years ago and seeing the limitations of this current roster, I don't have high hopes for a win. They should be outperformed by a superior roster. Just getting to this game has to be considered a win for the US.

But if they can keep it competitive, even in a loss...far exceed all expectations and should drive some fear into Mex moving forward knowing how hard they have to work to beat the US B/C team. Hell yeah, I'll take that.

that is where I am too.  I hope we can stay with in a goal for a while to make it interesting.   But if Mexico gets 2, we are probably in big trouble.  We have not scored more than one goal against any team but the minnow in this tournament.

I would be fine with a loss, hypothetically, but then Mexico is probably going to be really chippy, etc., and then I'm going to lose my mind. And there's really no preparing for that.

Watching that behind the scenes video is always nice because they have replay angles we didn't see.

They never showed the reverse angle on that Turner save on the 1st minute turnover during the Jamaica broadcast, but you can see in the recap it's a beauty.  Turner had no idea that was offside.  He's had a monster tournament.

And they didn't show the PK push on Williamson, but at 7:31 of the vid there's a clear and obvious handball vs Qatar in the box.

welcome to Concacaf.

Wait until the away WC qualifiers when the bags of piss, batteries and wtf ref calls come thick as thieves.

I saw this too but for some reason I did not recall seeing that when watching the game.  I don't remember the US players protesting or raising their arms..

What I'd like to see tonight is for them to play like they have nothing to lose. This tournament has been a smashing success IMO, and even getting their doors blown off my MEX won't diminish that to me.  If I were in that locker room giving the pre-game talk, I'm saying something to the effect of:

Don't let them ever forget the names Arriola, Bello, Busio, Cannon, Dike, Gioacchini, Guzan, Hoppe, Johnson, Lewis, Lleget, Moore, Acosta, Pines, Robinson, Roldan, Sands, Turner, Vines, Williamson, Yueill, Zardes and Zimmerman! NOW CRY HAVOC AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR!!!

Whom ever scores the first goal tonight puts the other team in new territory, as neither team have trailed in any game so far.

This also sets up what, I assume is a very rare occurrence, that if this goes to pk's at 0-0, that the tournament would finish with two teams that never trailed.

Mexico moves the ball so well, and our midfield is limited enough in possession, that I expect we'll either be forced to bunker and counter or get overrun and blown out.

A close game, where we match them blow for blow, would be a terrible sign for them.  IMO they may not get many more chances to boss us.

The media guys are in the stadium and they are mentioning that the field looks narrow.  I am not sure who that favors more.  Probably the US if I had to guess.

Las Vegas is now the front-runner for the next round of MLS expansion, a source close to the league says. Another, though, says it's probably too early to say for sure whether LV becomes 30th club. Next MLS board of governors meeting: Aug. 25.

Does this have something to do with tonight's lineup?  Because that's the only reason I keep opening this thread right now.

Tonight’s USMNT Starting XI vs. Mexico: 1-Matt Turner, 2-Reggie Cannon, 7-Paul Arriola (capt.), 9-Gyasi Zardes, 12-Miles Robinson, 13-Matthew Hoppe, 16-James Sands, 17-Sebastian Lletget, 19-Eryk Williamson, 21-George Bello, 23-Kellyn Acosta

Good for GGG.

Not sure about Bello, hope Nips is in better shape, but otherwise I like it. Especially getting Williamson in there.

great to see Williamson get a HUGE chance here.  Had to start Zardes as Dike is just not right (whether injury or mental, I don't know).

Bello over Vines is interesting but Vines may just be spent and he needs fresh legs.  Both fullbacks are different.

Overall, I like it.

Assume Vines has a knock or something?  Don't have any idea what the tactical differences might be, but Vines has been pretty good.

Love it otherwise -- basically the best lineup we could put out there IMO.  Huge opportunity for Acosta and Williamson to show they can hold the midfield against top tier opponents.

Could argue Roldan over Nips, but if Nips is healthy, it's still good. His experience here matters.

Otherwise, I agree.

Had the exact same reaction.

Healthy Nips provides genuine width...Roldan has been solid in the absence of anybody else, but he's not a natural wide player.

What I like about what GGG has done is mixed and matched some to allow guys to get time without having to change tactics too much and he has options on the bench.

I haven’t been super impressed with Vines but he’s been fairly solid and Bello was meh in his appearance - interested to see how he does.

I would have gone with Roldan but get Nips is a veteran here and can do a job for us.  Roldan as a sub makes sense.

I guess Cannon is healthy now - feel a little bad for Moore as he’s been better than Vines, IMO but Cannon I think is better so I like it.

Question about the chant penalties. First one is players to center for a few minutes. Great. Next one is players to locker room for 10 minutes. Ok, also very harsh.

Final one is "match abandoned for the day". What does that mean? Mexico loses? Or match gets halted where it is? Or it's nullified and they start over?

If Mexico is losing 2-0, for example, wouldn't that actually ENCOURAGE the chant to get them to stop play for the day?

I've wondered same thing. Or if they're gassed late like they were against Canada, it was actually a smart move (if that's what it was) by fans to do it then and get them a timeout.

FIFA statute gives them massive latitude on what to do after abandonment because god forbid we actually have a clearly stated punishment.  Here is the exact wording of what happens after abandonment of a match.

“disciplinary measures such as the implementation of a prevention plan, a fine, a points deduction, playing one or more matches without spectators, a ban on playing in a particular stadium, the forfeiting of a match, expulsion from a competition or relegation to a lower division.”
