Chase's show. Chase's ending. It's not like DaVinci went and aske the local smallfolk how he should finish the Mona Lisa. It's Chase's story....not ours. You want to make a better mob show, go do it.

 
And by the way - did anyone notice the gas prices on Long Island? Is gas really that cheap out East? We are still paying around $3.30 a gallon here.

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Fans of "The Sopranos" are seizing on clues suggesting the controversial blackout which abruptly ended the TV mob drama meant that Tony Soprano was rubbed out, and HBO said Thursday they may be on to something.

One clue in particular, a flashback in the penultimate episode to a conversation between Tony and his brother-in-law about death, gained credence as an HBO spokesman called it a "legitimate" hint and confirmed that series creator David Chase had a definite ending in mind.

"While he won't say to me 100 percent what it all means, he says some people who've guessed have come closer than others," HBO spokesman Quentin Schaffer told Reuters after speaking to Chase.

"There are definitely things there that he intended for people to pick up on," Schaffer said. (Watch viewers try to make sense of the end Video)

Chase himself suggested as much in an interview Tuesday with The Star-Ledger newspaper of New Jersey when he said of his end to the HBO series, "Anyone who wants to watch it, it's all there."

In the final moments of Sunday's concluding episode, Tony, the conflicted mob boss who has just survived a round of gangland warfare, sits in a diner with his family munching on onion rings as the 1980s song by rock band Journey, "Don't Stop Believin'," blares from a juke box.

Tension builds as a suspicious man wearing a "Members Only" jacket eyes Tony from a nearby counter before slipping into a restroom. Then, as Tony looks toward the restaurant's entrance, the screen abruptly goes blank in mid-scene -- with no picture or sound for 10 seconds -- until the credits roll silently.

Stunned viewers, many initially believing something had gone wrong with their cable TV reception, were left wondering whether Tony ended up "whacked" or whether his sordid life went on as usual.

Even star James Gandolfini wasn't sure.

"You have to ask ('The Sopranos' creator) David Chase that. Smarter minds than mine know the answer to that," Gandolfini told the New York Daily News. "I thought it was a great ending. You decide."

The jarring, fill-in-the-blank finale, concluding a show widely hailed as America's greatest television drama, sparked a furious debate about whether Chase had conceived of an actual ending and whether he left the audience any clues.

The biggest hint, according to a consensus taking shape on the Web, is a scene from an earlier episode in which Tony and his brother-in-law, Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri, muse about what it feels like to die.

"At the end, you probably don't hear anything, everything just goes black," Bobby says while they sit fishing in a small boat on a lake.

That scene is recalled briefly in a flashback played at the end of the penultimate "Sopranos" episode, as Tony is lying in the darkened room of a safehouse clutching a machine gun to his chest in the midst of a mob war.

"I think that is one of the most legitimate things to look at," Schaffer said when asked about theories that the Bobby Bacala flashback was meant to foreshadow Tony's death.

Moreover, he said the man in the "Members Only" jacket could be interpreted as a symbolic reference to membership in the mob. "Members Only" also was the title of the episode in which Tony's demented Uncle Junior shoots him in the gut.

The "Members Only" guy was played by the owner of a real-life pizza parlor, Paolo Colandrea. Schaffer denied reports that Colandrea had appeared earlier in the series as the nephew of Tony's New York gang rival, or that there ever was such a character. He also dismissed reports that Chase had filmed more than one ending to the finale.

For those of you who still hate it, I'm not going to tell you you're wrong. Art is subjective. We like what we like, you know? But the one reason for hating it that I'm having a trouble abiding is this notion that David Chase screwed everyone over by leaving us hanging.Let's take the Holsten's scene out of the equation for a minute, okay? Now what's left hanging? The war's over, and Phil is dead. Paulie takes over the old Altieri/Aprile/Ciffaretto/Spatafore/Gervasi construction crew. Sil's in a coma, never to recover (though, shockingly, his hair turns out to be real). Butchie runs New York, Tony runs what's left of New Jersey, and while Carlo is probably talking to the feds, plenty of captains and high-level hangers-on have cooperated before with little consequence (see Jimmy Altieri, #####, Ray Curto, Jack Massarone, Adriana, Eugene, etc.).On the lower-case family side, Janice is preparing to "make it work" with Bobby's kids, even if they have no interest in that. Carm's real estate business is going well. Meadow's engaged to Patrick Parisi and preparing to sell her soul to a big-ticket law firm. AJ has already sold his soul for a dual-exhaust BMW and the promise of a career in showbiz or club management. (And I like how Tony's real son has now taken part of the career path of Tony's surrogate son Chris.) Funny thing about folks bringing up this quote and relating it to Tony supposedly dying at the end of the show...If you think of how Bobby died in the train store, he definitely heard it. Multiple shots tore him apart.Not the peaceful ending Bobby wondered about in the boat.

I try to calmly tell them that one of them was killed, but they don't want to believe me. I simply nod politely instead of running down my credentials and wasting my breath. :yucky:

See, i thought that contrast is exactly why they had the flashback, not any foreshadowing for Tony.

:ptts:Anyone who says that, obviously did not watch the show from the beginning, since anyone who watched Season 1, will remember the assassination attempt that resulted in the death one of the two black guys.

IMO...Tony is very "much". He's more of a legit boss than anyone else in the show now. If it came down to what the other 4 families thought...why would they agree to get rid of someone with so much potential?

Well, one of the other families did broker a meeting between Phil's crew and Tony. And during the meeting, Phil's guys ok'd his death, and looked to little Carmine for everything they said. Which leads me to believe that little Carmine is the de facto leader of that family now. He and Tony have always gotten along great.

So there's really no reason for Tony to be killed at the end, other than fans that want blood or for shock value. I don't think it would be consistant with the show, people don't usually get whacked for no reason. But who knows. That's the version I'll stick with until another one is proven.

I agree and why I didn't think he'd be killed prior to the finale, at least by the NY/NJ mob...he seems to be the strongest boss of the group.
 
Just recieved the finale explanation below from a friend a mine via email...no author, just the text below. I'm not sure if it's been posted and I'm not sure I buy it...but thought I'd pass it along for the entertainment value.

The ending was genius if you've paid attention to the show or are just a fan of well developed well thought out plots that all tie together and have the memory of a champ to remember it all

the ending was simple, he got killed, but let me tell yall why and explain in detail... There was 3 people in the room total who had a reason to kill tony.....

the two black guys, they were paid before to kill tony but he was only shot in the ear, this was in one of the earlier seasons,

also in the earlier seasons, the trucker who was sitting at the bar stool, who the camera kept focusing in on, is Nikki leotardo, Phil Leotardos nephew, he was in one of the early season episodes where Phil and Tony have a sit down....

heres where the genius comes in....

When tony ' s walking in the diner,you see the camera focus on him, then it switches to his perspective, and you see him looking @ the booth hes gonna sit at...

then the camera switches back to tonys face, then it once again switches to his perspective, and it shows him looking @ the door and looking @ the people come in..... Everytime the door opens the Chimes sound....... Carmela walks in, Chimes, AJ walks in Chimes, this when Meadows parallel parking, still trying to get inside the restaurant....

at this point the camera switches back to the trucker who goes in the bathroom......

Then it goes to a scene where meadow finally parks and starts running in the diner....

the doors about to open, Tony looks up....

and No Chimes......................

No Music............

Everything just goes black...............

My latest thought is that the Bobby stuff was relevant, but it wasn't Tony that was whacked but the show. We thought something was going to happen, but the show was killed.

Another recent theory I heard, which would explain some of my complaints about cheesiness.

Tony falls asleep last week in a barren room. No sheets on bed, no alarm clock, nothing. When he apparently wakes up, there are sheets on bed, a mirror, an alarm clock with music going off. None of that was in the end of last week's show. Tony dreams the whole last episode. A.J getting settled, Phil going down and agent harris cheering for him, Meadow becoming a lawyer and getting married. In the end, he sees himself sitting at the table. He is dreaming of having dinner with his family. Its ends when tony wakes up from his great dream. When A.J. says during the episode, "you are all living in a dream", that is a clue. sheets on bed, A.J's comment, and tony seeing himself at the end are all clues that the show really ended last week. This weeks episode was all a dream.

It's particularly the people in the "IT'S THE SAME TWO BLACK GUYS!!!!!11" camp who are making me ill.The medics on the scene put a white sheet over one of the guys who shot Tony. You don't drape a white sheet over a living person. And when Junior and Livia watched the report on TV, we were told that one of Tony's assailants was killed.

the ending was simple, he got killed, but let me tell yall why and explain in detail... There was 3 people in the room total who had a reason to kill tony.....

the two black guys, they were paid before to kill tony but he was only shot in the ear, this was in one of the earlier seasons,

also in the earlier seasons, the trucker who was sitting at the bar stool, who the camera kept focusing in on, is Nikki leotardo, Phil Leotardos nephew, he was in one of the early season episodes where Phil and Tony have a sit down....

heres where the genius comes in....

When tony ' s walking in the diner,you see the camera focus on him, then it switches to his perspective, and you see him looking @ the booth hes gonna sit at...

then the camera switches back to tonys face, then it once again switches to his perspective, and it shows him looking @ the door and looking @ the people come in..... Everytime the door opens the Chimes sound....... Carmela walks in, Chimes, AJ walks in Chimes, this when Meadows parallel parking, still trying to get inside the restaurant....

at this point the camera switches back to the trucker who goes in the bathroom......

Then it goes to a scene where meadow finally parks and starts running in the diner....

the doors about to open, Tony looks up....

and No Chimes......................

No Music............

Everything just goes black...............

In one of the early episodes of the sopranos, tonys talking with bobby about what it must feel like to die..

Bobby says "at the end, you probably dont hear anything, everything just goes black"

part of that was revisited in the second to last episode during the

last seconds of it, when tonys about to go to sleep and he flashes

back to the memory of him and bobby on the boat... "You probably dont

hear anything everything just goes black"

so in the end, the Journey song was playing, the chimes on the door

sounded but when meadow came in, the guy in the trucker hat came out

and killed tony...

its the reason you aint hear, or see when he died.... it was

from his perspective.... and everything went black, then the credits

rolled...

The fact that people are still debating this and dissecting it 10 days later is amazing...I cannot remember any TV Show (or movie, for that matter) receiving this much scrutiny...

The biggest support against Tony getting whacked, IMO, is that it would be one helluva sloppy whacking...

Those type of mob executions on the show (including Phil's earlier in the episode) were quick and unexpected by the victim...

Members only guy walks in, sits at the counter, repeatedly looks at the Soprano's table, Tony looks at him, taking note of him, etc...

THEN the guy finally walks into the bathroom...

Why wouldn't he just walk into the restaurant, walk up to the booth, and fire...

Or, at the worst, walk directly into the bathroom...

If that had happened I would give more credence to the hitman theory...

But with him lounging around I cannot buy it...

I think it illustrates the whole "Tony looking over his shoulder at everyone forever" line of thinking that has already been espoused...

I just rewatched both parts, and this is correct. He lays down on a bed that is CLEARLY sheetless, without a blanket. He is also wearing a leather jacket.He wakes up in sweats...on a bed with sheets and a blanket.Has anyone else discussed this? Is there any meaning, or did he just get up in the night and get comfy?
