Paramount is good for CL.
Every now and then I think back 25 years to when I had a friend in the Midwest overnighting me CL games on video cassette because she had Fox Soccer (or whatever it was called then) and I couldn't get it.

What a world.

  you were watching something else.

bunch of balls put back to guys in great spots in and around the top of the box- shots flashed high instead of on target. Spurs had a couple of great looks too... but otherwise were dominated.
Meh.  One clear-cut chance imo.  Lots of shots from outside the box.  Traore a beast with no end product.

Its unreal now - almost too much impacts my productivity.  I will say I still think fondly back to Fox Soccer where you could essentially get all 10 EPL matches every weekend and they wouldn’t ruin the scores on screen and it was easier to avoid spoilers.  You could watch 3-5 quality matches each weekend - and I felt lucky then.  Now, you can match 10-12 in hi-def and pretty good announcing.

And the quality of the EPL just continues to go up.  You don’t have teams like Wigan and Blackburn that were playing for a point before the first kick and played a putrid style.

I'm kind of amazed at how quickly Chels players adapted to Lukaku...got the ball in to him repeatedly, showing or with back to goal. Just put it in there in ways they couldn't with anybody else but Giroud. And then I didn't realize he could make those diagonal runs into the channels too. Mount in particular figured out some nice ways to use him.

Hopefully CP can work well with him...I feel like CP always played well with Giroud, so maybe that new combo can work. Havertz played well, but didn't particularly light it up combining with Lukaku...same for Ziyech and Werner in limited minutes.

Pulisic -- Ziyech -- Werner -- Hudson Odoi -- Kante -- Loftus Cheek -- Barkley -- Drinkwater -- Silva -- Zouma -- Chilwell

None of them started today.  Bonkers how much depth Chelsea have.

Tammy Abraham gets the start for Roma today and has assisted both goals.  Would be great if he could cap it off with a debut goal here in the last 15 minutes.

Whoa. And You forgot Kepa.

That team would be a solid contender for top 4/Europe.

They also have this young kid Trevor Challobah on the bench today - he was MOTM for Chelsea in their first game last week against Crystal Palace. They've sold some really strong players this summer as well and have a couple out on loan who have great promise. Its good to have a billionaire owner who supports the academy, but it took about a decade before it started to create a pipeline.

Konrad on for Marseille and then all hell broke loose with a pitch invasion after Payet threw a bottle thrown at him back into the stands.  About as ugly as I recall inside the stadium in recent times.

@RBairner: Serious incident at Nice v Marseille. Payet hit by a bottle, throws it back into the crowd, supporters charge onto the field to confront players. OM players clearly furious. https://twitter.com/RBairner/status/1429538903552405506/photo/1

@jpaterson97: One of the Marseille staff ran on and lumped a Nice fan ffs 🤣 https://twitter.com/jpaterson97/status/1429540577402576901/video/1

Thanks, I was looking for a good video of the OM dude in orange knocking the Nice pitch invader TFO.

He and Payet will probably be in some trouble over this, but hopefully every Nice fan on the field will get a lifetime ban as well.

I wonder if Nice will get a fine for their "security". The resistance was very Maginot Line like

Nice may have played its last game in front of fans for a while.

If I ran the circus:

  • Payet and Peak Tyson would skate (they probably won't).
  • The pitch invaders would be criminally charged and perma-banned.
  • Nice would play the rest of it's games in 2021 behind closed doors.
  • Cops would have big sticks and mace available going forward.

Payet will get a suspension for this.

Nice should forfeit (imo)

Nice play in empty stands for a while.

All fans on the pitch charged.

Asst coach with the forearm shiver gets a reality show.

Side wasn’t good enough but I blame Ole - no reason to start Matic and to leave him on for 85 minutes was crazy.
Players didn't match SH intensity (buoyed by the first home match in front of fans) today. Didn't move the ball quickly, no sharpness in their passing.

Also showed why a true holding MF is needed more then anything. Someone that can provide penetrating passes from deep and can free up others to get more into the attack.

Matic is washed and can only pass left.  Fred is only good when he's with McT and even then the pair isn't what you want for a title challenge.  Martial could not get his feet right. Even Shaw could not get his passes off.

Pogba, Greenwood, De Gea were all good.

But when you are chasing a winner against a team that has packed it in and gone 5 at the back, Lingard is NOT the answer.  VdB would have been better leaving Pogba wide.

And do I think that was a foul by SH in the buildup?  Yes.  BUT Ole is right, the team needs to respond better when the call doesn't go their way.  Couple times they were caught out and stopped playing when the call wasn't made or throw given the other way.  That's on United and not the ref.  Fred and Maguire should have done better to defend.

Yes, several players had an off game but for me I come back to Ole - he picks the side and is watching the same game we are. It was bad enough starting Matic from the beginning but it’s insane he gave him 85 minutes with all the other options he had available.  And that’s why I say he wasn’t brave enough (and yes I know that word doesn’t fit a soccer match).  Sure, it’s game 2 of 38 but nothing tells me he will do something different later in the year.  I’ve heard him say several times that the players need to push on and be more aggressive or whatever - he needs to do the same.

FFS, United dominated the game.  Soton scored on a crisp counter and a deflected shot.  It happens.  Home teams always play better at home, and statistically it is proven that soccer has the highest home field differential.  Yet, United had twice as many passes, dominated possession had well more than twice the attempts, and thrice the big chance, xpg was nearly 3-1 for United, and they didn't lose.  Not the best result, but not end of the world here.

Lineup that Ole threw out there was not to lose - that will be the case whenever Matic and Fred are two of your mf'ers.  I agree that Matic is probably done, as a MF option, but you do need a bit of rotation here.

The only things that bother me about United is they paid 90 million for a bench player?  That's ridiculous, lets start him. Martial and Lingaard need to be sold, neither has a place on a top 10 team in the world, but either would thrive on a lesser team.  I'd rather have the likes of their youth team players then have to continue to trot out these guys tbh.

But, they did do something I liked in loaning out Brandon Williams, because I hope he never plays another game for United, ever.

I did like the kits.  And Juve's kits.  They complimented each other

And there was a CR7 shirtless pose this weekend.  Too bad it was ruled off.

Yeah I guess McT had a knock and could only give them 30 mins?  I was excited when he started making changes earlier then the 85th min, which he tends to go.

Sell Matic to Roma/Jose' please.

Keep in mind that Sancho and Varane got in to camp late.  Not surprised they haven't started.  It will be fun when Rashford Greenwood and Sancho are starting up top.  Still means they need a holding MF.

Lingard needs to go.

Martial needs to stay.  I disagree with all those sell him calls.  Same people that want him sold will then complain there's no rotation and depth.  He is one year removed from being the top scorer, can back up the LW and the striker postions.

I’m greedy - they should have had the 3 points.  Literally my only complaint is Matic when he had other options.  Like you said, start Sancho and sit Matic.  I didn’t think the side overall played bad at all and yeah, a little unlucky with the foul and deflection.  I want Ole to have more of a killer instinct than he does considering the quality available to him.

Don’t forget they have Cavani to throw in there too.  I could see selling Martial if the price is right - get rid of Matic and bring in a DM.

Trust me, I'm greedy too, but it's the second game of the season.  I'm certainly not close to panicking.  Team is the best it's been in many years and I'm cautiously optimistic here.  But I mean, if you're going to judge the league in two games, well Chelsea look absolutely unbeatable so may as well pack it in.  Dortmund looked unbelievably good in their first game and Haaland on pace to be the first 40/40 player, since then?  Lost two straight, looked very pedestrian against BM.

This has been their downfall under Ole, dropping 2-3 points against teams they shouldn't be dropping points on.  And with the run through the top 6 in Oct-Nov, they need to not drop points now. The bolded goes hand in hand with not having a true DM.

Cavani will be a great late game go get a goal type.

Sell Matic, Jones, Lingard.  Get a DM.  If someone overpays for Martial then ok, but he still has value to the club, if he can find his form again.

Nobody is panicking - I’m just reacting to this game.  The problem as BMav points out, this is a pattern and I think one he needs to figure out.  League is too good for all teams to not drop a lot of points but if you want to win the league, away games at Southampton that you controlled need to be 3 points.  That and Matic sucks is all I’m saying ;)

I was worried that his great run of form would convince people he needed regular time back here with United - I’m with Bmav, he’s not the answer.  Try to make some money off last years performance.
:goodposting:

Lingard is a hard worker and is good enough in space to make things happen.  Unfortunately, United is rarely given space and often has to break down low block teams to win.  Lingard lacks the vision and creativity to break down a team.  He is not disciplined in his movements and often gets into others space or blocks off their passes and runs when a team packs in against them.

Teams do not pack it in against West Ham.  Games are often more open and more space given.  Lingard fits there and is good enough to be a player in a team like that, someone that might make things difficult at the top, but isn't challenging for trophies.
