⚽ Soccer Match-day Thread (9 Viewers)

I just realized this thing is two-legged.  With Covid, injuries, afcon, and a crazy calendar this winter/spring, its one of those I'd  rather have been knocked out of.
oh... I didn't realize this either- for some reason I'd thought they got rid of the two-legged stuff because of Covid.

chelsea may rue all those missed chances.

Milan win 3-1 probably could've been 4 or 5-1. Leo has really stepped it up over the last year. Shaky makeshift backline but they did a good job in the 2nd half. After getting it to a 1 goal down Roma just imploded. Really solid win to start the new year. Now I got to wake up at 6:30 on Sunday for a match UGH. I hate these real early matches in one way but the other thing is working retail and mostly working on Weekends a early game if I work later gives me time to watch them at least

juve with a crummy pari.  3 or 4 matches cancelled due to Covid breakout.  i will assume serie a shuts down for 2-4 weeks in a bit.  italy getting hit hard again.

The "Magic" of the FA Cup starts this afternoon with Man City taking on Swindon Town - who are a mere 72 spots below City in the pyramid.

Good News/Bad News - the game is at Swindon Town, but the only thing Man City are bringing to the game is Covid.  Even Pep faked Covid to not have to go.  Football Manager Legend Rodlofo Borrell will take charge of City in the 3rd Round tie.

Newcastle fans think Botman wants to play for this trash side? I got very little faith in this ownership and I think Half the rumored transfers are just agents and clubs using Newcastles new found wealth as a stalking horse to drive up their client or players price.

This looks to have been a pretty wild game: 1st-half red card,   5 alternating goals in the last 12 minutes

Barnsley 5  AET 4 Barrow
Barnsley: M Andersen (23'),  J Williams (42'),  D Cole (83'), C Morris (88', 102')

Barrow: O Banks (61'),  A Driscoll-Glennon (78'),  J Jones (86'), J Kay (90')

Red Card: (Barrow) T Beadling  (38')

Always fun watching Roger Bennett live-tweet about Everton:

Men in Blazers @MenInBlazers · 2m

Liverpool fans. Serious question: Has Rafa Benitez given you more pleasure as Everton manager than he did as Liverpool manager?

Dani Alves looks really good for a 38 year old. Always the offensive weapon, but his speed and stamina still seem at a high level. That probably more bad news for Dest

More magic:

Kidderminster Harriers - the lowest-ranked side left in the FA Cup - did their best to do so.

A late winner from Amari Morgan-Smith saw the sixth-tier side beat Championship club Reading - a team 79 places above them in the pyramid.

Former Scotland defender Alan Hutton told BBC Radio 5 Live: "This is what the FA Cup is all about - special moments. We have just witnessed one here. To put on a display like that... Kidderminster Harriers have been absolutely unbelievable."

Spurs need the starters to bail out the b-team.

Says all you need to know about the depth of the squad right now.

Get Traore in this week, ready to play against Arsenal!

The latter

Actually thought there were some standards about the numbers/lettering to make them visible for TV.

Spurs have a kaleidoscope of colors on the away shirt - but had to put the numbers in a black box on the back to be visible and not washed out by the shirt.  Not sure how Arsenal got this one through - albeit its for a worthy cause.

I have to say that it mystifies me that Conte is a Traore admirer.  To my eyes, Traore is the quintessential everything but end product winger.

Victor Moses effect,  I suppose.

Spurs don't really have any true wingers to convert.
Ah, so Conte sees him as a WB?  Interesting.

I'm not sure I see Traore having the stamina for that role.  I mean, the guy is ALL fast twitch muscle fibers.  Not really built to run all day like a modern WB should.

Yeah. I couldn't tell the numbers on TV much at all, but was using one of my lower quality TVs.

glad i started watching serie a and juve.  admittedly not a huge soccer fan, but watching juve come back from 3-1 down to win 4-3, with their portiere stopping a penalty was pretty exciting.

question for the soccer nerds; de ligt was called for a hand ball inside the box and given a yellow card, which was his second.  why is a hand ball a yellow card?

also, super coppa wednesday 3pE inter v juve.

John Muller@johnspacemuller

Morocco and Ghana kept the ball in play for just 44:01 yesterday, per @HigorSantos_10.

That beats Morocco's 44:36 ball-in-play time against Iran at the 2018 WC, the lowest FiveThirtyEight timed. Got to respect a national tactical identity of playing as little soccer as possible.
Can we just go to a 60-minute clock that stops anytime the ball isn't in play?  The current setup is just so dumb.
