Yeh, they usually take it pretty seriously.  they've won it 20 times, the next highest is Werder Bremen with 6.
They got knocked out in the second round last season, and I'm sure those in charge are not happy.

Since I started following them back in '97
They've won it 11 times, and been runners up 3 times.
Only 5 times in those 26 years have they not made it to at least the quarters.

Interesting.  Who did Liverpool sell to get the net spend down so low?

The issue with United's net spend is they have spent years giving new contracts with high wages to undeserving players so when its time to sell, they can't.  Jones, Lingard, Romero, Pereira all should have been sold.  It wouldn't be a lot but its something that helps.  Minor complaint for sure but its just ammo for those calling United out that doesn't need to be there.

Unfortunately, its also more reason why Ole may not be the manager to get them there.  He's improved everything around the team that was destroyed by LvG and Jose, but the results haven't followed.  The talent is on the roster.  Just needs to be Tuechelled a bit.

99% sure that was before Ole came on.

Ings was the only big sale I can recall.  They got something for Lovren too.  Then a bunch of smaller deals.

No one big has come in other than Jota since then.  Thiago maybe.

Overall it's largely the same squad they've had for the last three years though.  Plus Jones thru the academy.  And some smaller signings like Minimino and Elliott.

But the core of the team -- Alisson, VvD, Matip, Gomez, TA-A, Robertson, Henderson, Salah, Mane, Firmino -- are all long-serving.  Same with bit players Ox, Milner, Origi.

Konate, Thiago, Jota, Tsimikas and 50MM left over seems like a good trade.

Yep.  He was sold in January 2018 and Ole came on in December 2018. 

 
No live game for me today (was hoping bug from earlier in the week would be gone by now, but no), still 0-0 home to Blackpool which I'd kind of take given how the relevant teams have been playing.

In other news, this is going to be the week where City mess up a seven team parlay, isn't it?

Down a goal and a man and coming apart at the seams heading in to the half....yep- looks that way.

 
Genoa is all over Venezia (Busio and Tessman both starting). pressing all over the field and giving them no respect. still 0-0 in coming up to the half, but it's been all Genoa. I don't think I've seen Tessman on the ball once.

I mean, they both looked electric yesterday.  Dybala is kind of playing a trequartista role and Chiesa is a winger, so I guess the answer is that Morata lets them down too often.  I'll also say that I thought the back four was pretty shaky against Zenit at times.  

But yeah, kind of implicit in my question is why hasn't Dybala, at least, realized his potential more consistently.

I had the same question after the one time I've seen them play this season.  Strange how they are getting beat up so much in Serie A, especially losing to some of the mid/lower table teams there.

 
Not sure I've ever seen that before.  ATL just had a man sent off for a third yellow card foul on Mane. 

Except that the ref didn't show the yellow, or, somehow, even whistle a foul for the first two.  Then went straight red the 3rd time.

Yeah, that was strange. This ref has not had a good outing.

 
10-man Spurs beat 9-man Vitesse. 3-2

Spurs jumped to an early 3-0 lead, before tiring out, conceding two, then Romero took an unnecessary 2nd yellow in the 2nd half, 15 minutes later, Vitesse CB took 2 yellows in a space of 5 minute, and then their keeper received a dubious straight red for hand ball outside the box - no VAR in this league.  Keeper jumped to stop a ball about 25 yards from the goal - in real time it looked like his arms were wide - but when the ball struck, the arms were tucked in - but Ref issued the Red, and Spurs win Conte's debut.

Ole sticks with his defensive line-up, Bailly into the back-3, Pogba suspended, Cavani injured.

Pep mixes things up a little - Grealish to the bench, Jesus, De Bruyne, Foden up front.

 
Genuinely conflicted in this game.  Watching United get torn apart will never get old -- every pass by City is like sipping a fruity drink on an empty beach.

OTOH, I'd still like United to steal a draw against all justice in the 92nd minute.

It's somewhat crazy with all the clean chances that City has created that the two goals are an own goal and whatever that was. It's a testament both to how bad United's defense is as well as how City lack an incisive finisher

I can only surmise that United really did not want Conte, for whatever reason.

Ole is really out of his depth - imo.  He has reverted to a back-5, in an effort to stop the bleeding,  But, at home?  that can't instill much confidence in the team.

 
City have an amazing capacity to turn games boring. It's hard to believe this is a derby. Just feels so lifeless in the 2nd half.
