Was at the Flamengo - Chelsea match today. My first experience with world club teams when they may have actually been trying. Been to a couple of matches when European clubs were here preparing for their league seasons.

Back to today. Little surprised at the attendance. Only about 54K. Atmosphere was great. The Flamengo fans were passionate to say the least. Flamengo won 3-1.

Was a fun experience, even at a casual fan rooting for Chelsea.

Saw a bunch of Palmeiras fans at JFK airport today
 
Just 2 games in, but I'm enjoying the tournament and for whatever reason I like the fact the four Brazilian clubs haven't lost, are all leading their groups with combined 6 wins and 2 draws.

There are some really good teams in Brazil. They play some beautiful football too. Fun to watch.

When I've watched Brazilian league, even with the big name teams, I've been struck by the skill on the ball and the disinterest off it.

The South American teams have been key. They've brought passionate fans that have given the games the feel of mattering. They've embarrassed the European teams just enough that you can see them start to care more.

I've enjoyed lots of games. I know the European teams aren't in top form, but I don't think they're just dogging it either. And it's fun to see teams I know from Football Manager Pentagon Challenges like Mamedoli Sundowns or Ulsan. I think FIFA gave it their best shot at completely bungling this, but I think it's going to stick and be fun in the future.

I have seen some of the Euro players and coaches pointing to the heat as an issue and a reason why the Brazilian clubs are adapting better.

Heat wave about to hit most of the country should be an interesting dynamic for this tournament. Heat index looking near 110* at kickoff for the Bayern-Benfica on Tuesday. Not sure those teams are used to that.

We were talking about the tournament over the weekend. I feel like they could have made this a true spectacle not only with some better marketing, but also made it more of a dream cup with this version coming in 4 years. What I mean is make this year a true invitational and invite the famous teams from around the world first. Build interest, then have the 4 year qualification cycles. Sorry Aukland City, but Barca should be here over you.

Also, don't play games at 1pm local time on a Tuesday. And use the 20-30k stadiums, not the 50-70k ones.

Well point two of that last paragraph is on FIFA, they were offered smaller stadia but vastly overestimated the interest there would be in one of the greater acts of hubris in recent times, hence why our bookmakers are varying the old "spot the ball" competitions, asking people to highlight which seats on a photo are actually occupied by fans to win free bets. And on the first point, it sucks for the players if it is ultra hot, but you've got to have the timings work to some extent in your biggest market (i.e. Europe), basically nobody here gives a **** as it is, which would reduce to actually nobody if the earliest games kicked off were 10pm.

Yeah a lot of issues when you compare the club competition vs a country competition. More localized fan viewership, less traveling fans. It really wasn't well planned or marketed.

Oh, I disagree, I think it was actually planned and marketed quite well - just that FIFA were clueless to the fact that their target audience is a tiny fraction of the size they thought it was
 
I think that says more about the relative lack of cash in the MLS Cup than it does about the money that is in the CWC, at least to date. Spurs would have won more money by finishing 11th as opposed to 17th with everything else being equal

The whole thing feels so half-assed too. For some reason, they decided to close a bunch of the entrances in Charlotte and physically install turnstiles. Merchandise looked like an afterthought. Conflicting information from FIFA and the stadium about policies.
