Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund got the last two CL spots.
EL spot goes to SC Freiburg, ECL spot goes to Mainz 05. RB Leipzig and Werder Bremen miss out on Europe next season.

FC Heidenheim fell into the relegation playoff spot, against SC Elversberg.
FC Köln earned the second straight promotion spot out of BL2.

In other news, Stuttgart beat Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 on Saturday to win the DFB Pokal and earn a spot in Europa League next season. The 2 goals by Bielefeld were the first goals scored by a 3rd division side in the final.

Wow. Poor ref decision might've cost Aston Villa £100M next year. That's gonna be hard to forget for their fans.
What happened?
Ref blew the whistle too soon when he thought the United keeper was fouled. The keeper never had control of the ball and Villas goal should have stood.

Just saw this clip too. Pretty bad.

We had two televisions set up yesterday and had this game on with the sound off, so no commentary and I didn’t realize there was no VAR review. I thought it was a good call live, or at least I would say it was what I expected because they always err on the side of protecting the GK in these situations. On slow mo replay it proved to be a much closer call. I don’t know how the rule is worded but if it requires the GK to be holding the ball, he never got to that point obviously. But if the rule speaks to “control” of the ball it’s the correct imo call because he had it corralled with his hands.

I’m torn on the whistle debate. Not opposed to VAR overall but I generally prefer referees making the call in the moment rather than outsourcing their decisions to the guys in the booth. If they think they’ve seen enough, I respect the refs who make a call an own it rather than letting it play on with VAR left to the job of overturning a non-call.

Another great final day for me and some friends yesterday. Results could not have come in much better for me personally. Rebecca Lowe was brilliant , resplendent, perfectly on-point all day. I miss her already and can hardly wait to see her smiling face again in August.

Control, per the laws, is when the ball is between the keepers hands, between a hand and another object (ground or body), or any part of his hand touching the ball except for when making a save. The angles I saw were not conclusive as to whether or not he was actually touching the ball when it was kicked away or not. Had he waited until the ball went in and went to review, not sure there would be enough to chalk off the goal. But because he called the foul before the goal, it cant be reviewed.

United were on the attack from the beginning, this play was against the run. Sadly it was a perfect example of what is wrong with United, No one can score for them. Had they played this was all season they may have actually been in the top half. They need a scorer badly.

But Emi Martinez bodying up Hojlund, who probably would have missed, is what cost Villa. Not this call, which may have been correct.

Agreed. The other part is the GK reaction for me. Vast majority of GKs would react much differently to someone trying to poke out a controlled ball. Ideally, the ref considers that before blowing the whistle.

GK should have done better getting on the ball, and I think the GK panicked, esp after it was poked away from him. Very poor sequence from several people there.

There is an Instagram account called refsneedlovetoo that does a good job breaking down plays like this one. He will show the actual laws and considerations a ref needs to go through for each call. I don't always agree with his interpretation of the play itself but it is hard to argue when he shows the laws and how he would apply them.

Agree that Emi Martinez was an idiot and was the main cause for them missing out(which is really sad given how great he's been for them this year), but going up a goal in a must win game with 20 minutes left changes everything. We'd have seen the biggest parked bus of the season(and certainly another Harry Maguire #9 special) if that goal stood and it changes the entire end of the game, as Villa isn't still chasing a goal down a man, opening everything up.

I guess I'm just on the side of... if the rules are there for refs to take advantage of VAR, then let the play finish before blowing the whistle, especially in this case where the play needed another 2 seconds to finish out. I have very little doubt that if roles were reversed that the whistle stays swallowed until the play is over.

And yes it's close to whether it's a foul or not... that's the point of letting it go to VAR.

Oh for sure I agree with all of this. It goes to the inconsistency of the refs and how they are instructed to call fouls. Was definitely a big moment and a big call to make.

Positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 17: Champions League
Positions 6, 12: Europa League
Position 7: Conference League qualifying
Positions 18, 19, 20: Relegation

This is quite entertaining to read with 17 and 12 qualifying for Europe.

Personally, and objectively, I think blowing the whistle on that play was the greatest decision in the history of any sport.
Please, bin Salman has £100M in loose change in his couch. The money doesn't matter and Europa League is a Cup you could've won...

I've not seen an "official" explanation, but for me the complicating factor is that the attacking player's foot stepped on the goalkeeper's hand, which (I believe) is a foul whether or not he poked the ball away first. I personally prefer the ref to make the call on the field if he believes he saw the play correctly. Otherwise, the VAR is reviewing a goal that was given and has to overturn it, which I think is always going to favor allowing the goal, so its not a neutral review situation.

Can't really spend like it, though, with PSR - at least not until we figure out how to cheat the system like City or Chelsea. Champions league money offers more wiggle room, plus it lessens the threat of losing guys like Isak, Bruno G, Tonali, Tino, etc.

Well, I wouldn't have put money on Sancho scoring and Antony not....
Oh sorry, I meant Former United Player Jadon Sancho and Former United Player Antony.

Congrats to Chelsea for collecting all the European trophies (CL, Europa, Conf League)
