That’s wild. That’s a similar population to the town I live in. Soccer is relatively big as a youth sport here, and I think we could cobble together an all ages team that’s roughly equivalent to a weak D1 college team.

Cape Verde is currently playing a game where if they win it, they qualify for the WC.
They are winning 2-0 in the 76th minute.
If this holds they will be the second smallest nation(population wise) to qualify, behind only Iceland.

True, it definitely helped alter the group strength but even saying that, teams like South Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, Burkino Faso and others are currently on the outside looking in and may have to use the intercontinental playoffs to qualify unless they make a big move in the remaining game.

My unofficial count has discipline scores of -14 for Nigeria and -18 for Burkina Faso so Nigeria has that tiebreaker (ACTUALLY ignore all that that was if NGA won by 3. They won by 4). Anyway so they are going to be in the playoffs along with the 2nd place bw CIV/GAB and CMR.

Milan a bit lucky with a soft, but by letter of the law, PK late to win it vs Fiorentina. Gimemez won yhe Pk with his usual throw himself to the ground hands to face histrionics. But he worked hard to go for the second ball that led to the "foul", so good for him.
They clearly looked adrift offensively without CP linking things up. leao used as 9, but its not his natural position and there was nobody behind him to help open him up in ways to take advantage of his strengths, which are not showing back for the ball. Lots of other injuries, so they missed more than just CP.

From the little i watched of them...very organized defensively with no mistakes, and lethal finishing. Might not look the best in terms of stats or eye-test, but a recipe for success in cup format.

An example of a team making great use of foreign-born nationals. The Moroccan team at the '22 World cup was less than half Moroccan-born and this U20 team had similar numbers. I wonder whether the Argentinian side had any xenophobic songs about the U20 team not being born in Morocco as the senior team had for France.

This made me wonder about how many the US had in 2022. It was less than I would have guessed. It was only 6 and one of the 6 really does not count as it was Reyna who born while dad was playing in England.
Interestingly, 4 of the 6 may not even make the 2026 squad, the aforementioned Reyna, CCV, Jesus and Musah are all on the outside looking in right now.
