Wow.

The Faroe Islands beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in World Cup Qualifying
I had to look it up. Faroe Islands were 136 in FIFA ranking before this win.(which is higher than I expected) They have a population of 54,000. Crazy.
That’s wild. That’s a similar population to the town I live in. Soccer is relatively big as a youth sport here, and I think we could cobble together an all ages team that’s roughly equivalent to a weak D1 college team.

Another small nation is on the verge of making history.

Cape Verde is currently playing a game where if they win it, they qualify for the WC.

They are winning 2-0 in the 76th minute.

If this holds they will be the second smallest nation(population wise) to qualify, behind only Iceland.

Job done, they won 3-0 and are coming next summer.
The pro of a larger format

True, it definitely helped alter the group strength but even saying that, teams like South Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, Burkino Faso and others are currently on the outside looking in and may have to use the intercontinental playoffs to qualify unless they make a big move in the remaining game.

Wow...those are some historically heavy hitters in that group. Didnt know that, thanks

No, sorry I wrote that terribly.

Only Cameroon is in Cape Verdes group. I was just trying to say that lots of teams are in trouble in their own groups.

Yours was clear...mine wasnt. I meant group of teams you listed, not Wcq group

CAF scenarios.

In already: EGY CPV MAR ALG TUN GHA

GRP B:
SEN 1st of
Win
Or tie and COD win by less than 7
Or COD tie/loss

COD 1st if
Win and SEN loss
Or
Win by 7+ and SEN tie

GRP F:
CIV 1st if
Win
Or GAB loss
Or tie and GAB tie
Or loss by <12 and GAB tie
Or loss by 12 and GAB tie and GAB doesn't outscore CIV by 3+

GAB 1st if
Win and CIV tie/loss
Or tie and CIV lose by >12
Or tie and CIV lose by 12 and GAB outscores CIV by 3+

GRP C:
BEN 1st if
Win
Or tie and RSA tie/lose
Or tie and RSA win by 1
Or tie and RSA win by 2 and BEN outscores RSA
Or lose by 1 and RSA tie/lose

RSA 1st if
Win and BEN lose
Or Win by 3+ and BEN tie
Or Win by 2 and BEN doesn't outscore RSA

NGA 1st if
Win by 2+ and RSA tie/lose

Playoffs next post.

CAF playoffs.

NAM MAD MOZ BEN And RSA cannot be in the 4-team playoff.

Current rank
1) CIV/GAB 2nd place clinched 16+ points

2) CMR 15 +9 14 GF
3) BKA 15 +6 13 GF
4) NIGER 15 +1 11 GF

Group B
COD will have 16 if they win and will be in playoff if SEN win

SEN will be 15 if lose and COD win with GD of +6 minus their margin of loss. 9 GF

Group G
UGA will be 15 with a GD of +3+margin of victory. 10 GF

Group C. Only Nigeria would have 15 if they place 2nd in the group. That happens if they win and RSA win. They would be 15 with a GD of +3+ margin of victory. 9 GF

Group E. Niger has already played but their long shot odds are worth mentioning. They need
UGA to tie/lose
And Nigeria to Tie/Lose
and one of:
COD to tie/lose
Or SEN to lose by 6+
or SEN to lose 5-0 or 6-1 or 7-2

So there ya go.

-QG

So RSA are on their way basically. If Nigeria stays 4-0 it gets interesting as if they are tied with Burkina Faso for the last spot it comes down to discipline.

COD and SEN will determine if that happens.

-QG

My unofficial count has discipline scores of -14 for Nigeria and -18 for Burkina Faso so Nigeria has that tiebreaker (ACTUALLY ignore all that that was if NGA won by 3. They won by 4). Anyway so they are going to be in the playoffs along with the 2nd place bw CIV/GAB and CMR.

With these results, Senegal almost certainly won't be involved in the playoffs.

Burkina Faso is currently in spot 4 with 15 points and +6 GD

Senegal qualifies directly with a win.

They also qualify if they tie and COD wins by less than 7. Or if COD loses or ties.

COD qualifies if they win and SEN lose or if they win by 7+ and SEN ties.

------

COD is in playoff if they win and SEN win (or WIN by <7 and SEN ties)

SEN is in playoff if they tie and COD wins by 7+

BKA is in the playoffs if COD tie/loss or SEN loss (they will be in on GD)

So there ya go.

-QG

we really need to get a WC thread going.

Here are all the qualified teams as of this posting:

AFC(8)
CAF(9)
CONCACAF(3)
CONMEBOL(6)
OFC(1)
UEFA(1)
I have the time. I'll sort it

In case you know someone who needs this info (club + national):
  • Ronaldo: 1049 played, 701 non-PK goals, 221 assists, 163/192 PKs - 84.8% conversion
  • Messi: 998 played, 711 non-PK goals, 393 assists, 105/129 PKs - 81.4% conversion
Messi has fewer games played, more non-PK goals, and 172 more assists. Ronaldo is a better penalty taker (more taken, better conversion).

Kerkez has been the scene of the crime a lot so far this year, but it's hard to believe he's the only problem despite the core of last-year's team being intact (at least today). LFC are definitely off defensively though.

My son is at Camp Nou watching Barcelona now.

Lucky *******.
Want to check it out with the renovations. Always felt very old when I’ve been before.
Also they're not back in the Camp Nou yet, it keeps getting delayed. So he was at the old Olympic stadium at Montjuic where Espanyol played for many years. Kinda wanted to check out a game there too but higher travel priorities with a toddler.

That could have ended 5-4 to either side. Very entertaining. United still with too many pieces that should go - Dalot, Casemiro and Shaw - but well done today at least.
Game was more about Liverpool's ineptitude in front of goal. 3 posts, missed free header on the 6. Even Salah was off on his shots. Lammens made some saves but wasn't tested.

Casemiro was solid and Shaw made some good plays but both need to be upgraded.

Dalot was just bad again today. His best skill is the high five. And he can throw the ball far.

But a win is a win. 9th, but 2 points out of 4th,

Agree - Liverpool should have scored a few.

Lammens has come in and been solid. Nothing fancy but after what we’ve had it’s a big upgrade

Milan a bit lucky with a soft, but by letter of the law, PK late to win it vs Fiorentina. Gimemez won yhe Pk with his usual throw himself to the ground hands to face histrionics. But he worked hard to go for the second ball that led to the "foul", so good for him.

They clearly looked adrift offensively without CP linking things up. leao used as 9, but its not his natural position and there was nobody behind him to help open him up in ways to take advantage of his strengths, which are not showing back for the ball. Lots of other injuries, so they missed more than just CP.

Congrats to Morocco, your 2025 u20 world champions. Beat ARG 2-0, and shouldve been beaten by the US.

It is strange to think this is probably the closest we will ever get to a world championship at any level in my life time.
From the little i watched of them...very organized defensively with no mistakes, and lethal finishing. Might not look the best in terms of stats or eye-test, but a recipe for success in cup format.

Eta...and of course im talking about Morocco here. US kind of the opposite.

Solid and steady plus he catches the ball and actually punches clear. All of these things are huge upgrades.

I mean talk about a program on the rise...............

Morocco now simultaneously holds the U20 World Cup championship while their senior side just broke the record for more international wins in a row ever.

Mjallby just won the Swedish championship (Allsvenskan). GB @charvik would probably be able to add much more to this story, but it is a remote fishing village with like 1,000 people.

A few articles about it, as it's a feel good story

An example of a team making great use of foreign-born nationals. The Moroccan team at the '22 World cup was less than half Moroccan-born and this U20 team had similar numbers. I wonder whether the Argentinian side had any xenophobic songs about the U20 team not being born in Morocco as the senior team had for France.

This made me wonder about how many the US had in 2022. It was less than I would have guessed. It was only 6 and one of the 6 really does not count as it was Reyna who born while dad was playing in England.

Interestingly, 4 of the 6 may not even make the 2026 squad, the aforementioned Reyna, CCV, Jesus and Musah are all on the outside looking in right now.
