Huawei Talk Band 2 looks a lot more compelling IMO
I like the looks of that product as well but when it comes to Huawei you just never know what is going to be released when and where. Their phablets have been pretty great but I've never seen one in the wild.
Supposedly it won't hit the states until Sept. The features are pretty limited, but really, I don't want to read a whole email on my wrist... I just want the notification and the health tracking and a clock. The 6 day battery and the fact that its also a Bluetooth headset make it pretty compelling to me. No idea on price yet, but I'm guessing it'll be somewhere around $200.
And honestly, that's all you need from a smart watch. I don't need to check Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. from my watch. Just give me notification when someone texts/emails/calls and I'm content with that. Are people really going to be sitting around and scrolling through Facebook on their watch?

First new product category introduced by Apple without Jobs influence.

It could very well work out, but it's a huge moment for Apple as a company.
This product has been in the works for the better part of 6-7 years....longer than Apple TV :oldunsure: I was reading papers on this thing in 2007.

Odds are all of the other manufacturers are hoping it sells well. Making smart watches popular in general will benefit everyone.

just saw my first iwatch commercial. those bastards sure can market the hell out of a product. no other competitor comes close.

I preordered mine at 3:01 am Eastern time. The only reason I am getting it is for running (Bluetooth wireless headphone setup). I got the Space Grey 38mm. Anyone else get one?

i was really close to convincing myself yesterday. But i think im going to wait. If i see good reviews, maybe i will grab one in a few months. Otherwise, i will wait for gen 2.

Meh. As much as I am into the Apple ecosystem and generally love the quality of their products, I think this is a pass. Even if I were an avid runner, I don't think I want this on my body soaking up sweat and subjecting to scratches and dings. This product is finely made enough (and costly enough) to be an attention seeking device when you're out and about, but I don't like to attract that type of attention.

My recent reads on this are: very limited battery life and limited functionality. For me to want to wear a watch every day, it has to bring something to the table that makes it indispensable. I don't see that yet.

I feel the same way. I think I will only use it for running because I don't want the attention from others either. I know there are other far cheaper options, but I like Apple and figured I'd give it a shot.

In other news... fair skinned irish man who can't swim decides against purchasing JetSki.... story at 7.

Yeah, I'm a big Apple fan, and we have 10 Apple devices in active use at our house. But I'm having a hard time coming up with a functional justification to purchase one of these.

I'm mid-40's and have thus far stayed out of the Apple ecosystem (great term) and get by with a crappy old flip phone (Verizon) that is a year past free replacement. Wife too. No kids. I love the fact that I put that thing on charge maybe once a week. We are so darn cheap we have the plan that charges by the text because we use that feature so little.

I seriously think I will retire a year early if I just hold out another decade instead of loading up. But it bugs me because I like new and cool stuff. If I dip a toe in, I'm screwed.

Things I tell myself to stay clean:

In the 1990's everyone asked me why I never wore a watch. My answer was that watches are uncomfortable, and I always have a clock around (engineer - computers everywhere). Free and easy is the way to go...

Wearable technology was held in disgust by the inhabitants of Stephenson's near-future dystopia "Snow Crash". They were called gargoyles. Same deal was also touched on in Brin's "Earth". We're just about there. I'm thinking a personal camera system with immediate upload to remote storage is good if you plan on getting mugged...

People use the watch as a fitness monitor, seriously? Why not just go in the basement and pump iron until you can't anymore? Surely the workout is good enough, and the scale will tell you how you are doing...

And get off my lawn...

jawbone 3 ships april 20th.

Does everything you actually want in a fitness tracker if that's your primary goal in getting something on your wrist.

That's like saying your handheld tetris game does a great job of playing games, I'm not sure why you'd want a MacBook. ;)

(half kidding) ;)
lol, except the jawbone Up uses a more advanced/accurate calorie tracking technology and doesn't need to be recharged every 15 minutes.

If you want to wear an early generation iphone on your wrist, by all means get the watch.

Does the jawbone 3 have music? The main reason I'm getting the watch is because I can put a few songs on it from iTunes and head out and run with some wireless headphones. I don't really need all the tracking and stuff, just something small that plays music.

Have been waiting for mine to get delivered for months. I think they made changes based on the iPhone. Looking forward to it.

you can get running watches that do this. and they're cheaper too

I'm not getting an Apple watch because I have not been able to find out if iBooks is even on the watch. When I go running or biking, I like to read and if the Apple watch cannot have books on it, then it doesn't work for me. A clear overlook by Apple to not include iBooks on the watch. Terrible.

lol, of course the jawbone up has great battery life.. it hardly does anything. I hardly ever have to change the batteries in my alarm clock either. :D

Don't worry fellas, other companies will make watches for poor people, too. :coffee:
I don't think it's criticism is purely on price.

The LG Urbane is going to be just as expensive but much more functional and stylish....

http://www.engadget.com/2015/02/15/lg-urbane-watch-android-wear/

... considering you won't need to have a smartphone with you.

Of course, if a person was looking for a "dumb-smart-watch" that requires a phone to be in your pocket you are right there are much more economical options already out there. At $180 I think the Moto 360 is a good "dumb-smart-watch"....

... or if you have a .edu email address you can get one for $155...

Both look better and are either just as functional or more functional than what apple is offering.

Pssst... those watches are all round. Everyone knows that only out-of-touch IT dorks wear round watches these days.

 shtick detectors need recalibrating up in here... And maybe take this stuff a LITTLE less seriously.

The funny thing about it is that what you are trying to play off as Schtick is real Apple loyal mentality. So many will buy this because..... Apple. Just as well because, as so many times before, it doesn't hold up beyond that.

What? dude I've said repeatedly in this thread this thing is not worth it and I won't be getting one. It's cute that people actually get personally involved in / offended by the success of a product. Why do you care if it sells or if someone prefers it to the "better values" out there?

Idea: everyone buys the watch they like, everyone is happy. Boom! ;)

About the only line of logic I've heard from those buying this.

Half dozen friends quite seriously can't even give an answer to why they would buy this over any single alternative out there.

Apple cult loyalty is impressive.
Wouldn't an obvious answer be that it just looks a lot nicer and its more of a status symbol. Like why you'd by an entry level bmw or mercedes instead of an accord or camry.

Haha, you could only afford the Apple Sport!

The only thing more ridiculous than The cult of Apple is the folks who deny that Apple products in general are superior to their counterparts, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
