50 Years Ago Today

Big Red are the 🐐 of Championship performances ... nothing else like it.

<2>
My parents were there for that. My uncle lived in Louisville at the time. There is a picture of my dad intoxicated running on the track prior to the race. They have some pics of Big Red too. In the moment they had no idea that they were witnessing something very special.

wik absolutely loved Big Red, was in genuine awe of the remarkable champion ... my favorite of all his recollections:

i get weepy every time i think back to, just before driving cross-country the spring of '84, calling Claiborne Farms and using the fact that i was a "breeder" - minor partner in some mares who'd been covered by Claiborne sires - to be allowed to visit Big Red in his paddock when i passed thru Kentucky. when we drove up, he was at the far corner of a hillock, enjoying some shade. as if on cue, he came out into the sun to dawdle & daisypick as if we were no big deal and then thundered down his acre upon us. he was 14yo (55-60 for a human) at the time, not as lean as when he was young, but looked like he still wanted to run thru a brick wall and still absolutely could. i had hoped i'd get to brush against that famous blaze, but that wasn't regal enough, i guess. i'll never be as overwhelmed by a physical presence as i was on the day that chestnut seemed greater than gold.

thank you, old friend ... missing you very much 🙏

before this day gets outta hand with Belmont bets and booze, wanted to give a heads up on a horse in my V Stable that's won for me, and is back out today at Ellis (Churchill) ...

Race 9, 5:40 post - #2 Quaternion

12/1 ml, in with some decent company ... but he gutted a stretch battle out like a champ last time after attending some brisk fractions ... i'll dizzy those odds up every time - doubt he drifts lower ... he may even be a higher price come post time.

One of my favorite horses in training right now is in Belmont 9 …..Big Invasion.
You know I’m a sucker for a closer lol and that’s what you’re getting with him.
Playing this horse is not for the faint of heart. He will be LENGTHS behind the leader at the top of the stretch in a 6f race, will need a pace to run at and Caravel is a beast. But man, I love to watch this horse run ❤️

man, Joel had as s*** a day yesterday as i can remember - the stiff job he gave War Like Goddess were criminal ... also were visibly choking back an earlier fave - not saying he threw the contests, but he sure as f*** didn't "effort" either.

there were no COTdamn way on god's green marble that WLG shoulda been trailing the field whilst the frontrunner waltzed ... not like she needed pace to factor, she were top class in the gig - just a mind blowing strategy.

... at least he's with CC for your horse here - will give a look for sure 🤘

... busy day ahead, will be poppin' in & out, here are my first few Stakes plays - this card is stacked ...

Race 5 - The Poker 1:45 Post Time
7 keybox w1,4,6

Race 6 - The Brooklyn 2:22 Post Time
8 keybox w1,5,7,10

Race 7 - The Ogden Phipps 3:00 Post Time
5 keybox w2,4,6

more to come ...

Race 8 - The Woody Stephens 3:40 Post Time

just saw that the #8 Fort Bragg scratched outta here, and i were gonna use him underneath - sucks.

this will be all about the #3 Arabian Lion - not gonna key this one, just playing straight up - i saw a beast at Pimlico three weeks ago, i expect more of the same.

#4 Generallisimo Jaime can eff right off - but it gotta use him underneath.

ol' pal #11 Victory Formation also up in this mix ... shoulda been him & Fort Bragg both pressing the engine flesh - so i'll slap him in here, too.

3 over 4,9,11 over 4,5,9,11,12 - play it all ways up n' down if ya like, or extend to super ... but Arabian Lion will be getting his pic took 📷

Englehart's only entry of the day are the #9 here in race 2 ... used it in my pick 3 sequence, like the chances

and howzabout jock Katie Davis ... in there with Javi, Joel, los hermanos Ortiz, Johnny V, Flav, Gaf ... murderer's row for her to battle here.

man, Joel had as s*** a day yesterday as i can remember
I know. Not sure what’s going on

:kicksrock:

... and now he just gave a freakin' textbook fence scratcher to almost steal the 2nd.

Clement horse, so there ya go.

she were absolutely manhandled and muscled out the gate - never had a shot ... the big boy jocks schooled Katie D

#3 Anarchist in the upcoming 3rd ... Joel up for Dougie in a flat sprint - what could possibly go wrong?

i had 3,5,6 for my pick 3 - so let's get 'em in 💰

I had the 8 keyed boxed but not with the 6 of course lol

For the fearure, I'm thinking trifectas
8,6/ 8,6 /all 5x
8,6/ all /8,6 3x
all/ 8,6 / 8,6 2x

assuming:
8 is Angel of Empire
6 is Forte
All is every other *********** with a saddle

Race 5 - The Poker 1:45 Post Time

6,7,1 finish ... did not love that prohib fave #1, were a good spot to play against - #7 drove it for 99% of the race, only to be nipped on the a** by the #6 on the wire - we'll take it, tho.

5,9,2,7 finish

a romp for my #5

this #5 i'm on beat Secret Oath & Search Results last out (the #4 & #2 here today, respectively) ... big graduation if she can add Clairiere to her pelts ... awesome field, great race.

In for the triple

AL were the single of the day, moreso than Cody, imo ... 2/1 was a GIFT.

The Jaipur Race 9

if ever there were "horse for the course" it's the #11 Casa Creed here - has won the last 2 runnings of this Stakes, and Luis/Mott are lethal.

but im'ma look inside to the #2 Go Bears Go - his first off the bench for Ward this year were a respectable 3rd by a coupla at Churchill, a race he needed to find his '23 legs.

2 keybox w5,10,11,12

Repo Rocks had a terrible trip - had no idea what they were doing

never saw a highly regarded horse that rank and hot in a showcase day Stakes - dunno wtf Ness fed him prior to the race (he's been suspended before), but he were lugging and tugging and out his mind.

ridiculous.
