few thoughts here in the (sober-ish)
aftermath ...
- NT had it all his way, as expected ... kept waiting for somebody to press him harder, but he were given the lead and ran as far as he could with it - they were a bit faster than the Preak, but nothing crazy - he just couldn't last the trip, and Johnny V were outplayed by Javi.
- TT also had no excuses ... Luis got him out in the clear, there were no impediment to him uncorking that (supposed) championship kick home. yeah, he bottomed the tri, but if he were truly special he would've delivered here in the winner's circle. he were where he needed to be - but, no dice. disappointing series for this one.
- the Cox trio formed that first wall behind NT approaching the final turn ... TS pestered NT enough, but never got ahead nor did he do anything more than serve as caddy - dead heat for super bottom (HS/AoE), but the Pletchers inhaled 'em whole.
- Forte ran a very big race. went from thinking that if they scratched him he'd be sent to the shed, to being very impressed by his late charge ... he still may prove to be the class of this lot ... remember this were his first out in roughly 10 weeks, and it showed early on ... definitely looked a bit bothered for the opening half, at least - first off the bench from training interruptions and being on ice. he worked extremely well leading up, and availed himself well enough with that late burst. heart of a champ.
- Prat were the one who requested the blinks on AoE for raceday (he were training in them prior to Derby) - his lowest Stakes finish resulted. dunno on that call.
- Arcangelo really wanted to get out there early ... Javi calmed him down, settled the trip, then patiently waited - Johnny V ceded a sliver on the rail, and were looking outside over the wrong shoulder, and that's where Javi ate his COTdamn breakfast/lunch/dinner - came to NT's inside, very close quarters - but not out his damn mind like Irad ... no, much more savvy - he schooled 'em.
NT were gonna get swallowed at that point, but had Javi not calculated the perfect move, it likely woulda been the Pletcher's in a ding-dong Durkin classic call - Javi had to hatch it, but Arc had to execute it, and that he did, with the kick of a real special horse. all the credit in the world to those connections ... Javi really turned the clock back this TC campaign, and Antonucci just got handed a blank check - great job by all.
- three different winners of the TC contests - this crop is deep, if not unspectacular - Mage & Two Phil's will be back soon, with the latter eying one of the bullring Derbys to get himself on track for the summer Stakes sched .... we got the Haskell, Jim Dandy, PC Classic, Travers - then the fall brings the Breeder's Cup.
second half of the year are really wide open - cannot call any of these the cream just yet ... ergo, there are gonna be some great betting races with this lot, as nobody has seperated themselves enough to be considered above the field as a slam dunk fave.
- hit the Derby tri keying TP's, jumped on NT (assist from B7s) to cash the Preak ... but whiffed a big one yesterday - had some great undercard scores thru the campaign, and 2 outta 3 on the TC ain't bad - eh, Mr. Loaf?
