2011 Oakland Raiders In-Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Love that DBH is inactive today. Moore looks real good, actually the whole offense looks good. Looking more like Hue's bully so far. Love no penalties in the first half. Also love that I got sunday ticket for free this year as an east coast raider fan! Direct TV hooked up this loyal customer.

^^^ That wasn't directed at you, mass. It's all you heard from the haters all week.
Haha. Hey, I didn't like being a negative Nancy. Hated being pessimistic, and I am LOVING seeing nice, long, drives. The team looks so much better than last week. A lot more crisp. I think it's almost about time people realize this is not a terrible O-line. Somehow survived the loss of Gallery, it seems.

Time for :football: RUN DMC :football: all day in 2nd half.

I like how they are bringing Bush in on the short yardage downs, keep McFadden fresh.

Johnson and Routt also look good.

Couple of other things I am liking about the Raiders' play so far this year:

* Stout D on third downs in the red zone.

Twice (I beleive) in the game last week vs Denver and in the first half this week against the Bills, the opposing team drove the field into the end zone, and the Raiders held strong and limited them to field goals rather than TDs. This is critical in keeping points off the board, but it also shows that the Raiders can change momentum when the other team is threatening to score, which is a lot different from year's past when the Raiders coverage just seemed to increasingly decay as the other team marched them backwards.

* S/T field position game

This is more pronounced against the Bills than Denver, when they were pinned back a little more often in their own territory, but it seems that the special teams are being more effective in covering and wrapping up PRs after Lechler booms them downfield, and they seem to provide a little better coverage so they can start a little further upfield than I remember last year after kickoffs.

* LB play

This was always a weak spot in the past, especially in stopping the run -- always seemed that opposing RBs could blow past the second level. But this year, McClain, Groves, and Wimbley seem to be contributing to collapsing the pocket on pass coverage, and making plays in the 10 yards after the line of scrimmage. We have a long way to go here still, but I'm more encouraged than in year's past.

Still a lot to improve on, but the Raiders are showing some poise and pride this year. Would love to see this toughness continue.

Wow, that was hard to watch. That second half of football was horrid. Sure the Raiders cut down on the number of penalties, maybe now the can concentrate on cutting out the game changing ones. Horrible drive extending penalties today...

What are your guys thoughts on moore moving forward with the other receivers coming back oer the next few weeks? Is he worth a large fa bid as oakland's #1 wr or did he go huge today bc everyone else was out?

The kid is the goods, it seems. Question is, can the Raiders passing game be good enough for any receiver to be a consistent starter?

Let's get some recommendations for the thread subtitle this week. I'll throw out a few possibilities.

1) Raiders 1-1 after coming from way ahead to blow the game

2) Still in first place!

3) HEY... at least we're not the Chiefs!!!

:D

2 Words: Chuck Bresnahan
2 more words: Chris Johnson
Seriously.CJ killed us the whole game and Bresnehan ALWAYS kills us with the lead in the final quarter.

Bad tackling and penalties cost us another one. 3rd down conversions showed improvemnt today but the offense still didnt control enough of the clock. McFadden's big fumble and the offensive line still melting on third downs really hurt. The D wore down due to lack of ball control, a short week, and key players not being full strength.

McClain has not shown me that he is a good run stopper. We know that's a weakness with other guys but its not supposed to be a problem with your high first round MLB. None of the safeties or linebackers played well. If Fred Jackson got past the line or if a receiver caught a short pass they were soon running for a first down. Got to tackle. The pass coverage itself wasnt that bad but when you count the penalties and poor tackling, it was. Could have used another turnover also... there were opportunities. Its fair to question the defensive play calling but I wont blame that when guys are simply missing the play. Its a bigger fault when you dont execute. We got some pressure on the QB but not enough, not against that young offensive line.

Moore showed his ability to jump up and pull down a ball in traffic today. Campbell seems to already trust Moore to do just that. Moore needs to do a better job of getting open, then he should be ready to start. McFadden was the leading receiver today but like I said that shouldnt be confused with a winning formula. Considering Boss, Ford, DHB, and Murphy were all inactive with injuries we have to be pleased with the play of Campbell today. We knew we had good depth at WR. Probably too much but its good when your track stars are always getting injured. I have doubts that Schilens is really healthy. At least Hagan looks the part of a nice veteran reserve. Myers will likely never be much of a pass catcher. Likely why we drafted Gordan and why Brock is still around on the practice squad. Offense showing more promise but has to learn to put a game away by playing mistake free and churning the clock.

Miller really struggled with kick returns, probably why he isnt the primary. Not sure why Jones isnt being used as a returner. Special teams, normally a strength, did us no favors in this game.

Tough home opener against the Jets, then in come the Patriots. This is why the Buffalo game was so important. At least the Chiefs look like the worst team in the NFL right now. We are still tied with the Chargers and Donkeys. Hopefully we can win at least one of these next two to make up for this loss. Playing mistake free will be critical against the well coached opponents.

That was a tough loss.

Period.

Turning a 3 TD lead at halftime into a loss is horrible. I don't care if any individuals looked better or worse, it was a failure as a team and that is all that matters. No excuse for that crap.

A bit confused on this point. What did Moore not do to prove he should be starting? I haven't looked at the stats of all the WRs, but I'm fairly certain that his numbers and efforts were better then any single WR all of last season. Maybe even the best game of a WR looking back into the 2009 season. Getting open in the NFL is a pretty realitve term. Moore proved he has the hands, and ability to make a catch in traffic. I'll take that over what DHB has brought to the table in any game to date.

Sure, Moore proved that he is probably already the best receiver on this team but you and I understanding that and Al Davis understanding that are two different things!

He's a rookie who has to earn it. He needs to run better routes and get more seperation. Not sure about his blocking ability either. Moore was not open on most of the throws this week and I didnt see him getting open last week either. Last week we saw the bad route which is something that takes time to develop. Jump balls are risky, especially the short ones. Dont worry, he'll get there. He's on the field. The coaches know its only a matter of time. He should still see the field even after Murhpy, Ford, and DHB all get back.

I am actually a bit more optimistic about the Jets, than I was about the Bills game.

I was worried about Fitz, because a QB that whips it around tends to hurt us. Plus the short week, blah blah blah.

But I did like the way the team came to play. We've had a lot of recent teams that wouldn't have even made that good a showing on the road like that. A defensive collapse in the 2nd half? Well sure, it's Bresnahan, who runs Al's Cover-1 to a T, with very little variation. Marshall showed a lot more imagination than Bres has thus far. I hate Bres, and can't believe we brought this clown back.

But the defensive limitations we have will be there until Al is dead. Insisting on running man-to-man, with little disguise or changeup, is always going to lend itself to getting picked apart, and getting a lot of PI and holding calls. You simply are not allowed to handfight down the field the way you could 30 years ago. You need a serious pass rush on every down, or someone will always break wide open, and we will take turns blaming this CB or that CB. No one can cover anyone forever, and when the offense knows exactly what the defense is going to do, that doesn't help corners either.

I continue to like the way Campbell has been playing, and this team is gonna score some points. I like that I can't really recall seeing Campbell being hung out to dry, and the ball is going to the right guys. If it takes 3 WR injuries to see DMC get 6 passes thrown his way, then I am hopping the next plane to Oakland, and taking a wrench to Murphy and Chaz's knees. It's about freaking time.

I think the Jets at home isn't a bad matchup. A much more conventional offense, relying on an average talent at RB, and a QB that doesn't chuck it around. The Jets are better team, but if we run the ball on them, and win the turnover battle, they have a tough road to hoe.

The following are all from Vittorio Tafur's twitter account:

Hue on last Bills TD: "Coach Jackson left the guy wide open. ... we're win as a team, lose as a team. I'm not putting that on no player"
Hue on all the whining on how Raiders never get any calls: "We’re not dealing with that anymore. That’s all crap in my opinion."
Hue: Sunday's loss "has nothing to do with an official, has nothing to do with a call, has nothing to do with nothing" besides not finishing
I have to say, I sure like what he is saying publicly about his team.

We were playing mostly zone coverage against the spread offense in the second half of the game against the Bills. The defensive collapse has nothing to do with Al Davis insisting on playing man to man. If you dont have the personell to play man to man, no NFL coach is going to do so. That includes coach Davis. The coverage wasnt the worst part of the defense. It was the run after the catch and running game avoiding and breaking tackles. Bad tackling and penalties, two of the three things that beat us year in and year out.

Raiders brought Bodiford back in for a physical today. Nick Miller could soon be cut. Bodiford was ahead of Miller in camp before a forgetable preseason game in which Bodiford made a couple of big blunders.

Yeah, actually, it does.Al brought back Bres, his former yes-man, the creator of the famous Sticks Defense, if any Raider fans remember this nightmare. We run Cover-1 all game long, then switch to a prevent D, which we have NEVER been good at, allowing chunks of yardage. With a lead, in a soft zone, the idea is to give up 4-6 yards at a time, not 10-15+, which is what the Raiders do. Reason why? IMO, we never run zone until these moments, and I am guessing they never practice it. We were playing zone in the 2nd half, with a bunch of guys that Never do it. It was a straight Cover-3, with very little blitzing. We don't have one decent coverage LB, we have two former DEs on the outside, and a MLB with average wheels. When the QB can line up, and knows exactly where the safeties are going to be 90% of the time, that is a major disadvantage for the defense. No line stunts, no blitzing up the gut. Nope, just a bunch of athletes, all alone by themselves in coverage, and the occasional safety blitz. Then they go to zone, and the players look lost, because the NEVER DO IT. Blame the individual players if you want, but other teams have ways of covering for lesser players, and putting lesser players in positions that they can shine. Chris Johnson can't cover Stevie Johnson? Well, make sure to just leave him on him, all alone, and don't switch up the coverage. Maybe he'll do better next play! But let's not do this: Let's NOT shift the coverage, DON'T double Stevie sometimes, and sure DON'T Routt on him wherever he goes. There is a lot of talent on that defense, but they are not as good collectively as the collection of players would suggest. The defense hasn't fooled any one in years, watching the Eagles/Steelers/Ravens is like watching a different sport sometimes.

Robert Gallery out another 4-6 weeks. Actually a bad thing for us. One of the things that determines a player's value for compensatory draft picks is playing time.

Huff was playing hurt, Van Dyke got dinged, Mitchell has been out all year, and we cut all the experienced backup corners. Despite all that, the pass coverage wasnt that bad. Not nearly as good as when Nnamdi was here obviously, but not the reason for the loss.

this.the only plays that weren't an automatic 8+ yards for buffalo were when we brought the blitz hard.get ready for holmes to tear up the raiders next week.

This loss to Buffalo has a bittersweet irony attached to it. A feeling of déjà vu. Like I’ve seen this before. Games we should have won and let slip away. Like the Arizona game last year, or the Jags game. That’s what you look back on when you finish 8-8 and bring up all the same tired excuses. This is a team that can beat anybody, but can also play “not to lose” and in the process can give away any lead.

I like Hue Jackson’s words afterword, accepting the blame for the loss. It shows an accountability I didn’t see with Cable. HueJax isn’t let the excuses and finger pointing to permeate and affect the psyche of the team. I believe HueJax knows what is wrong, but it’s all on the defense at this point. That’s not his bailiwick, and not completely under his control.

It’s been delegated to Al Davis’ minion, Chuck Bresnahan. By all that is right, it should have been Bresnahan who took the fall for the loss. But while we are on the subject of assigning blame, Chris Johnson and Rolando McClain deserve their fair share of it. They were both sloppy in coverage and seemed to jog at times. The second half was a half-speed, half-hearted effort. Boyd and Giordano couldn’t cover any Bills receiver, and looked like they flinched when Freddie Jackson came at them. The defense as a unit was a failure, and their intensity level was insufficient to seal the deal.

But put the balance of the blame squarely on the shoulders of Bresnahan. He doesn’t put the defense in a position to go for the jugular with a lead. That always comes back to bite you.

If you are averaging 29 points a game, and only a stupid Kyle Orton fumble away from being 0-2, there is something very wrong with the defense that needs to be corrected soon. HueJax and Saunders are holding up their end, and it’s time that Bresnahan dials up the aggression late in games or else it’s going to be another lost season.

Just a couple of thoughts:

1) Nick Miller needs to go, he is really bad.

2) Rolando McClain looked really bad this game. I counted around 4 to 5 missed tackles by him, when the running back had the ball. He doesn't wrap up when trying to tackle he tries to shoulder tackle and the guy just bounces off and keeps going. I'm really disapointed in McClain and I'm starting to wonder if he is turning into a bust. I hope he gets it soon.

Jets Week

In the Raiders favor, Jets All Pro Center Nick Mangold is reportedly out. They say 2-4 weeks maybe with a high ankle sprain.

Raider D line tried to play it off like they got out coached and they did, but truth be told what’s their excuse for piss poor run D? McClain had 10 tackles and a bad game.

Safties Goirdano and Boyd got exposed when RBs broke contain and McClain coasted after 2nd level ball carriers then failed to make plays when it counted.

Bad, bad, bad...

SS Mike Mitchell and TE Kevin Boss would be welcome additions after prolonged injury absence.

Boss can hopefully help the ground game aka clock management and sustain drives with chain moving grabs. Speaking of chain moving, Oakland’s rag tag Flying Tiger Wide Receiver Corps lit up the Bills secondary.

With Oakland’s top 3 WRs out on Sunday, the Raiders fielded 6 yr multi-team practice squad veteran Derek Hagan and 5th round rookie draft pick Denarius Moore to great effect and over 300 yards areal offense.

All without TE Kevin Boss.

Boss may be back but the Raider back up Wide Outs won't be facing a Terrence McGee-less Buffalo secondary this week. CBs Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis are likely the best tandem in the League but they'd better not sleep on Oakland receiving options including Chaz Schilens and Darren McFadden.

Raiders Coach Hue Jackson said Boss could've played against the Bills but said he erred on the side of caution.

If Boss is not full go in Oakland’s home opener, it may indicate there is something seriously wrong with him and the Raiders "almost cleared for take off" stance on the former Giant TE may have been a smoke screen to force opponents to game plan for him anyway.

All speculation aside, let’s just hope he plays and dominates.

Assuming the addition of Boss, Oakland has a rare and deep arsenal of weaponry available for O Coordinator Al Saunders and HC Hue Jackson to choose from. An arsenal so deep in fact it’s matched really only by a few teams, like the Jets.

WRs Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress could present matchup problems, TE Dustin Keller is making plays not to mention former Charger and leading rusher against Oakland, RB LaDanian Tomlinson.

The Raider defense will no doubt work on shutting down the West Coast offense wielded so effectively by the Bills. An offense that negated Oakland’s formidable pass rush and exposed its depleted and run shy Safeties.

Strong Safety Mike Mitchell has been out of commission since the first of off season camps but says his goal has been to be ready for the Jets home opener.

Let’s hope he is.

New York’s visit to the Raiders backyard will be the perfect opportunity for the Raiders to exact revenge for a disappointing result in Buffalo and redeem their defense for its second half collapse and inability to adapt on the fly.

Oakland can win this game and they'd better because if Mark Sanchez and the Jets destroy them using the Buffalo blue print the Raiders will be hard pressed to stop the ultimate dink and dunk offense in Tom Brady's Patriots who visit the very next week.

I was fighting the Gallery crap all offseason too. I get a chuckle out of people who think that Gallery is a loss for the Raiders.

Some stuff:

Taiwan Jones looks to be returning kicks this week. Nick Folk has had 5 touchbacks in 13 tries, so he should get a chance.

Nick Mangold has a high ankle sprain, it'd be a miracle if he plays. Looks like rookie Colin Baxter would get the start.

Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (knee), tight end Kevin Boss (knee), kicker Sebastian Janikowski (foot) and safety Jerome Boyd (knee) were at full strength at practice Thursday.

Quarterback Jason Campbell (foot), cornerbacks Chris Johnson (groin) and DeMarcus Van Dyke (knee) and McFadden (shoulder) were limited in practice. Those four likely will play Sunday.

“I guess in their eyes, I’m limited,” McFadden said, “but I’m good. I’m full steam. I’m not taking any reps off or anything, so I’m good.”

We need to blow up the middle of the Jets offensive line. That gives us our best chance. A big special teams play or trick play could be a difference maker. I cant picture too much success from our offense. Must win the turnover battle and hopefully score first. Will need a good game in all phases. Fans will be pumped, players better be.
