***2013 Chicago Bears Offseason Thread*** (1 Viewer)

As pissed off as I was that they didn't take Sharif Floyd or Eifert with their 1st rounder, I'm ok with the rest of their draft. I still think they could have gotten Long in the 2nd.
Well the Cowboys were going to take interior O-line no matter what, so I think they traded down thinking Long would still be there at 31.

Yep - most "experts" I've heard said that is was virtually impossible that Long would fall all the way to the Bears in the 2nd round. Even if you don't consider him 1st round talent, there were quite a few picks in the 2nd before the Bears.

I don't love this draft - but I don't hate it either. I'm in more of a "wait and see" mode. In some ways, the waiting period on this draft could be a year or two. The Bears drafted some guys that are fairly raw, but with quite a bit of long term upside. The operative phrase being "long-term". If two or three of their picks aren't starting/contributing big time in 2 years, then this draft stunk.

If in 2 years, Long is a starting guard who is a "plus player" at his position, one of the 2 LBs is starting and the DE is in the rotation, wreaking havoc on passing downs, and maybe the speed WR is opening up things for Marshall and Jeffrey on 4 WR sets, I'd be happy.

Chicago didn't really draft a speed WR this year. Wilson's 40 of 4.51 is right in line with:

Alshon Jeffery 4.48

Earl Bennett 4.51

Brandon Marshall 4.52

I'm guessing Chicago's quick hitting offense will focus on spreading the field horizontally instead of vertically. Running multiple layers of quick hitting passes using the WR's, TE, and RB's to cause confusion/match-up issues/blown assignments for the D. Chicago will still throw the deep ball every now and then, but it won't be to a prototypical speedster streaking open for the bomb. It will be Jay catching the D in a bad coverage/mismatch and throwing it up for his 6' 3"+ WR to make a play on.

From Gil Brandt:

"Love Kyle Long pick by @ChicagoBears. Was told by several people @nflcolts (24) and @packers (26) would have taken him had Bears not."

If you can get three starters out of a draft I think you are very successful. If you get four you had a terrific draft. I think Long could eventually start at tackle. It appears that he has the skill set. I feel better about the Long pick. He is definitely talented, but raw. He should be able to start at guard this year. I am hoping that Greene and Bostic can both contribute. As long as one of them becomes a starter that would be good. If we get lucky both will be good. If we get really lucky, Mills, Washington, or Wilson will do something. All three are interesting picks. I was impressed by Mills coming out and saying he and Bushrod would make a good starting pair of tackles. I like a fifth round pick who expects to be a starter. Overall it was not a sexy draft, but a solid draft with a lot of potential.

Jim Harbaugh: Marc Trestman great for Chicago Bears
By Chris Wesseling

Around the League Writer

The Chicago Bears' hiring of Marc Trestman as coach was a bold, unconventional move considering he had been away from the NFL for nearly a decade.

Although Trestman took his talents to the Canadian Football League after being passed over for promotion several times, he has long been respected as the one of the NFL's premier offensive strategists and quarterback gurus.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday that Trestman "taught me everything" when they were on the Oakland Raiders staff together in 2002.

"Everything wouldn't be an overstatement," Harbaugh said Friday on WMVP-AM, via ESPN Chicago. "We use his system still of calling plays and the way he taught us those concepts and techniques. I've used (those) since I coached with the Raiders, the University of San Diego, Stanford and the 49ers."

Steve Young once compared the job of a quarterback to tending a Japanese garden because of the high level of care, time and intricacy of work that goes into a successful career. Young, Rich Gannon and Scott Mitchell all credit Trestman as the most advanced caretaker and positive influence on their development.

Asked if the Bears hit a home run with their hire of Trestman, Harbaugh responded, "Absolutely. Grand slam. That was a grand slam hire. You see the coaches that Marc has put around him, they know football. He knows football. He's a great teacher, and I think that's coaching right there."

At age 57, Trestman has been "battered around, gotten kicked in the teeth and gone through challenges," as Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll explained to the Tribune. It's refreshing to see that Bears general manager Phil Emery was willing to think outside the box enough to give Trestman a long overdue shot at a coaching job.

Ditka credits George McCaskey for peace
Mike Ditka's final season as a player for the Chicago Bears was in 1966. His last season as their coach was 1992. So why did it take 47 years after his departure as a player, and 21 years after his final season as the coach, to retire the number of one of the most recognizable figures in team history?

A small part of the explanation could be the sheer size and breadth of the Bears' history. Before retiring Ditka's No. 89, a move the team announced Friday, the Bears already had the most retired numbers in the NFL (Ditka's is the team's 14th). I chuckled Friday morning when punter Adam Podlesh tweeted: "BREAKING: The NFL finally gives Bears the nod to use fractions and decimal points on jerseys after the last whole number is retired #iwantpi"

If you retired every deserving number in Bears history, there wouldn't be many left over for the current team.

But I think we all know that more than numbers were in play here. Ditka alluded to it during a morning appearance on ESPN Radio, noting the efforts of Bears chairman George McCaskey to reach out after succeeding his brother, Michael, in 2011. Michael McCaskey, of course, was running the Bears when Ditka was fired as coach.

"I never left" the Bears organization, Ditka said, but added: "I think what happened is they made a decision based on what they wanted to do. They had a right to make that decision. It hurts. It always hurts when there is a separation or divorce.

"But when George took over running the Bears and he called me, him and [team president] Ted Phillips and I met with him. I think [the meeting] was so cordial. George is a special guy. He probably had a little bit more vision than somebody else. But that didn't matter. That's not important to me. Whatever it is, it is. … I am very, very honored. That's the bottom line."

The ceremony will take place Dec. 9 at Soldier Field, when the Bears will host a "Monday Night Football" game (on ESPN!) against the Dallas Cowboys. It should be a great night.

Note: The video of Ditka's radio appearance is at the top of this post. Here is the link to the audio version if you prefer that.

Bears FB/TE Evan Rodriguez was arrested Friday morning for DUI, speeding, and improper lane usage by Illinois State Police.
It's Rodriguez's second arrest of the offseason. The first occurred in March on violence and disorderly conduct charges in Miami. Rodriguez was pulled over at 3:30 AM Friday. Charges were dropped following Rodriguez's first arrest, but he's on the roster bubble and trending in the wrong direction.

Evan Rodriguez issues statement after second arrest
By Dan Hanzus

Around the League Writer

Two days after he was arrested for the second time this offseason, Chicago Bears tight end Evan Rodriguez released a statement on his most recent troubles.

"I am deeply sorry for the incident that occurred the other night," the statement read. "I want to apologize to the entire Bears organization, my teammates, coaches and Bears fans everywhere. I realize that I made a very poor decision. I know that more is expected of me and that I let a lot of people down that are counting on me. I will make positive changes in my life so that this doesn't happen again."

Rodriguez was arrested Friday on charges of DUI, speeding and an improper lane change. In March, Rodriguez was arrested in Miami and charged with resisting an officer without violence and disorderly intoxication. Those charges eventually were dropped.

Rodriguez is a former fourth-round draft pick with four career catches, so it's perhaps surprising that the Bears seem content to roll forward with their wayward tight end. Rodriguez would do himself well to avoid the hat trick.

ESPN Chicago reports the Bears will work out free agent QB JaMarcus Russell on Friday.
It would appear reports of Russell drawing interest haven't been totally agent-driven, after all. Per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Bears coach Marc Trestman is "intrigued" by the former/current colossal draft bust. The Bears will still work out "three other signal callers," however. Russell has a long way to go before he cracks someone's training camp roster, let alone 53-man roster. It remains extremely unlikely that he will. His only shot will be landing with an outside-the-box thinker like Trestman.

NFL suspended Bears TE Gabe Miller four games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drugs policy.
It's the first we've heard of Miller since he was the No. 140 pick of the 2011 draft. With zero career appearances to his name, this could be the last we hear of Miller before his release.

You haven't let us down, Rodriguez; you haven't done squat on the field yet! Lay off the booze or GTFO...

I'm all for giving a high 1st a second chance, but wasn't it recently reported that he lost like 50 lbs. yet he's still almost as heavy as a lineman? Terrible news day today.

Wondering who the other three signal callers are.

I heard on the Score that Trent Edwards was one. I missed the other one.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports free agent JaMarcus Russell's Friday workout with the Bears is expected to be more of an "information gathering" session than final step before a contract.
It makes sense, as Russell hasn't put anything on tape since January 2010. It's a minor miracle Russell has found a team that's even willing to "gather information" on him. According to USA Today, Russell is also drawing interest from the Ravens, but Profootballtalk reports that's not the case.

GM Phil Emery suggested that he's willing to give FB/TE Evan Rodriguez another chance.
Coming off a very quiet rookie season, Rodriguez has been arrested twice this offseason. Although Emery said he's "extremely" disappointed, he still envisions a larger role for Rodriguez this year. The Bears don't have any other realistic options at fullback right now.

Holy ####. Carimi traded for a 6th fn rounder!

Seriously...we exhausted all our options with him??????

Carimi was the guy Tice once described as the Bears best offensive lineman.

The Bears should benefit from having a professional offensive line coach this year.

Also signed Tony Fiammetta. Which made ERod expendable.

Wonder what Lovie thinks as he sees players he drafted get cut or traded?

I'm not too bothered by Rodgriquez. The Carimi matter stings a tad, but if the team felt it was better to move on, then so be it. I guess I would have liked to see him get one more shot, and under the new regime. Particularly when he was sent packing for only a 6th. Maybe the Bears were lucky to get anything for him at this point, but I guess I wasn't totally ready to write him off... and at that price tag, I think it might have made more sense to give him one more year just to see if the change in staff could help him turn the corner. -Oh well.

Was drafted by Emery.
True, I was thinking ERod and Carimi, Both are tied to Lovie. But, I get your point. I think Rodriquez exit was more self inflicted. But, you see the new regime (especially Emery) is not afraid to take chances on guys with checkered pasts.

Chicago Bears release fullback Evan Rodriguez

By Marc Sessler

Around the League Writer

The Chicago Bears have run out of patience with Evan Rodriguez.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the second-year fullback would be released following his two offseason arrests, according to a source informed of the decision. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune first reported the move, and the team officially announced it Monday afternoon.

Rodriguez was picked up in May on charges of DUI, speeding and an improper lane change. In March, Rodriguez -- the team's fourth-round pick in 2012 -- was arrested in Miami and charged with resisting an officer without violence and disorderly intoxication, charges that eventually were dropped.

Rodriguez was told his release wasn't for on-field reasons, the source told Rapoport.

In a related move, the Bears on Monday signed fullback Tony Fiammetta, according to his agent, Dennis Boyev. Fiammetta comes to Chicago after stints with the Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots. He'll compete with Harvey Unga for snaps, but Fiammetta hasn't appeared in a game since 2011.

The release of Rodriguez -- who also plays a little tight end -- comes one day after the Bears traded away offensive lineman Gabe Carimi to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a late-round pick.

General manager Phil Emery this month talked about welcoming back the underperforming Carimi with "open arms" and said Rodriguez would receive another chance. Neither proved true as coach Marc Trestman aims to build a team of players focused on the task at hand.

Shady that Emery keeps saying he's onboard with players and then cuts them shortly after.
