I don't know about Kelly, but trading or releasing Palmer gives us $6 million in cap relief. We are still on the hook for $9.3 million that can be spread out over 2 years if Reggie Mac wants to. The dead money is going to be historic in 2013 though.

As a Seahawk fan I would be happy with a bag of Doritos for Flynn. Flynn is horrible, he has a weak arm, can't make all the throws....and in his last 9 years of playing football he only has 16 starts. That isn't what you want.....there is a reason he isn't starting ANYWHERE. The best you can hope for is he sucks it up and you get a high draft pick out of it.

I'm sensing a trend. Is this the modern era of sports fans? At least Raiders fans have a reason to be mad even though Palmer doesnt deserve the blame. Seachicken fans dont even have a reason to be mad at Flynn.

Actually the Raider fans do have a reason to be mad at Palmer. He refused to take a reasonable contract offer that would free up money the Raiders could use to improve the team elsewhere. His contract, which wasn't negotiated by the Raiders, far exceeds his value. Rather than be a team player, like Vick did with the Eagles, Palmer would rather be a backup on another team, revealing his lack of heart as well as his selfish nature.Like I said before, good riddens.

As a Seahawk fan I would be happy with a bag of Doritos for Flynn. Flynn is horrible, he has a weak arm, can't make all the throws....and in his last 9 years of playing football he only has 16 starts. That isn't what you want.....there is a reason he isn't starting ANYWHERE. The best you can hope for is he sucks it up and you get a high draft pick out of it.

And where was I ever comparing him to what we paid two years ago? That's water under the bridge, sunk cost we won't ever recoup. But he was certainly worth more in trade than what we ended up paying for Flynn.

You don't get a comp pick (I think that's what you are asking here) for cutting a player. Only if he leaves as UFA.

That is a good point and I like the idea about making Palmer twist. It may be the moving Palmer now frees up some cash to go sign other FAs now, which is why I asked about the Raider's cap space after the trade.

Thanks for posting that, it's a sound viewpoint -- it's true we were in a no-win situation and needed to make any deal that was in any way favorable to get Palmer and his contract off the ledger.

At the same time, though, there is the argument that we may have had more leverage, given that we were trading Palmer to a team who has had a much rockier road -- and arguably way more need at the position -- than the Raiders. Even if the market for Palmer was soft, the Cards have had 5 QBs in the 3-4 years since Warner, none of them really startable. Yes, the Cards didn't want to overpay, but what other options would they really have that looked anywhere as good as Palmer?

Bottom line, yes, I think we could have gotten more for Palmer, or brought Flynn in cheaper, but we are moving in the right directional vector overall as we rebuild. I do hope that Reggie isn't the guy who simply falls back on "his guys" rather than keeps his eyes on rebuilding this franchise with the best possible players to succeed in the near term, and as a dynasty franchise for the next decade plus.

I hate that I am saying this, but I almost wish our focus was specifically on tanking this year so we secure Clowney. Taking a down-ey for Clowney (or however else you want to paraphrase the "suck for Luck" ethos) is something that is a great short-sighted move for the long-range strategy.

So basicly we get a 6th round pick out of it assuming Palmer doesnt get hurt and we dont get our 7th back next year. This was more about starting from scratch and wanting to give Matt Flynn a shot. Tanking the season might be the wrong word but this as close as it gets. At least we are making more of an effort to replace Palmer than Indianapolis did when it became likely Manning wasnt going to play.

Porter seemed like the most obvious CB signing for us and it finally happened. Its not enough by itself to fix our secondary but its significant. He's still somewhat young so he has a real chance to turn things back around. Unfortunately its another one year deal.

All these one year deals is just putting a body at a position. We arent going to build a competitor signing players to one year deals. We lost Wheeler because we only signed him to a one year deal. I compared us to a minor league team earlier because that's what it feels like. A player signs here to prove himself then goes and signs a big league contract elsewhere. The 3 defensive linemen we signed this year, all one year deals. The 3 linebackers we signed at least were to 2, 3, and 4 year deals. So we'll have our 4 linebackers including Burris and we'll have Branch back on defense next year. Everyone else???? Maybe Bilukidi and/or Crawford if they can continue to make the team.

The 1 year deals are the norm these days, and make a great deal of sense. If Porter proves to be valuable the Raiders will have plenty of cap space to resign him to a bigger deal next year. Smart move.

I think the D-line 1 year deals also gives a hint to where we are going to use that 1st round pick.

I don't think he's "falling back on his guys", he just knows what he's getting, its not like the Raiders roster is full of Packers' cast-offs. This was just the final nail in the coffin of the short-lived HueJax/Palmer era. It's better to pull the band-aid off quickly and move on...

You only get compensatory picks when you lose more FAs to other teams than you sign. We'll be in an improving cap situation going forward so its likely we will end up signing at least as many guys as we lose, probably more. We only got a 6th round pick which is near worthless after losing Campbell, Bush, and Satele last year. No, you dont get a compensatory pick every time you lose a player. All these one year contracts is doing is making us look like a minor league team.

Agree with the sentiment about all these one year deals. That's why I give Reggie only partial credit for Wheeler. If you are a really good talent evaluator and really beleive in the guys you are signing you try to offer them multi-year deals that are attractive enough for them to want to sign while still keeping them somewhat favorable for the team.

As a prior Pryor hater I have been surprised with how impressed I've been with the things I've heard and read about him following his lone start last year. It seems as though he has grown up quite a bit since he left Ohio State. I'm not saying he is ever going to develop into anything more than a servicable backup NFL QB but I must admit his physical attributes are tantalizing and IMO he could surpise as a fantasy QB2 eventually if he gets a real shot.

If you are a really good talent evaluator and really beleive in the guys you are signing you try to offer them multi-year deals that are attractive enough for them to want to sign while still keeping them somewhat favorable for the team.

The Raiders did not have the cap space to sign Wheeler. That is a fact. General consensus seems to be that the Raiders have significantly upgraded their LB corp with the signings of Roach, Burnett and Malava -- accomplished at a fraction of the cost of signing Wheeler to a LTD.

By and large players sign with the team offering the most money. We need to look no further than Al's tenure for proof. Despite having the most dysfunctional organiization in the NFL, players signed with the Raiders because Al offered the most money.

Reggie has been hamstrung due to cap space but we will have a boat load of cap space next year, so I have no doubt that we will be able to secure players that deserve long term deals. I hate to come a cross as an apologist for Reggie but this all comes down to his ability to evaluate talent. If he has skillz , then we will be competitive in very short order.

Anybody have any thoughts on the McFadden handcuff this yr? Is it Marcel Reece and/or Jeremy Stewart or somebody else? My thoughts are that maybe drafting another RB would be a BAD idea seeing as how they have so few picks. You think they can swing a deal for a change of pace back like Dion Lewis? Or find another bruiser like LaGarrette Blount who should do ok in a pinch.

IMO Reece gives them the best current option to back up McFadden but I would love to see what Tawain Jones can do.

Any more thoughts from the Raiders to switch him back to defense?

Last I heard the staff was moving TJones to CB, so I think he may be out of the equation. Reece is a good bet, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the Raiders take a RB with one of their three 6 round picks. After all it worked out pretty well for the Redskins last year (Al Moriss).

I agree that the Raiders are going to draft an RB in the middle rounds. They lost both Taiwan to a position change and Goodson to free agency, and aren't biting on the available free agency pool. They must replace both guys and the cheapest and highest upside method is via the draft. Don't hold your breath anymore on Taiwan. He will be given a shot as an extra defensive back and be a solid contributor on special teams or he will just be let go in camp. But he won't be a part of the RB rotation for the Raiders anymore.

I think that includes McClain's contract and bonus prorated to this year. If I understand this correctly if they wait until June 1st and cut McClain they can spread his $10 mil in dead money over two years, gaining another 5Mil in cap space this season(?) The Raiders might be holding off signing someone like Jenkins until it is determined whether the McClain's agent can work out a trade with another team (doubtful). If by some miracle another team offered compensation they Raiders would then take the complete cap hit this year, losing 5mil in space. Leaving then just enough to sign their draft pick picks. Can someone correct me if my understanding is incorrect please?

I think that is correct. The Raiders have already used Michael Huff as one of it's two June 1 designations. They have one left. Cutting Ro Mac would offer some extra room to sign the rookie draft class. But I don't think the Raiders are stuck to just him. They could designate Tommy Kelly as a June 1 designation even though he's already gone, and for cap purpose split his hit. So it's still conceivable that trading Ro Mac would be beneficial to the Raiders. This is from what I've read and heard. I could be wrong. If so, someone please correct me.

I'm of no help when it comes to the cap stuff. Generally I try to avoid getting too tied into it, as it always seems that a team has an ability to work around whatever rules exist; Whether it be signing a player, or getting under cap, it always gets done because of the room they have to work the numbers.

That appears to be the plan. Dead money is their friend now. A convenient excuse for being cheap. Could've made McClain a June 1st designation but deciding to tack on....must be going for some sort of record. To be fair, it does help the 2014 cap, but it appears we are taking the biggest poison pill the cap doctors could possibly prescribe.
