*** 2013 Oakland Raiders thread *** (1 Viewer)

And I think it's silly to talk about playoffs yet, but it's nice to see the Raiders are recognized as a relevant team.
We are favored this week in a game which brings us to 4-4. Really incredible when you think about how bleak the season looked in August. And even after Philly, four of the next five games are very winnable.
Agreed. And if you stop to think that had Pryor, or even McGloin had player vs the Redskins, we might be looking at 5-3 (Remember Flynn fricken gift wrapped a TD to the Redskin defense.) Amazing.

I am still holding my breath every game watching Pryor, looking for any signs of progress. This week despite everything else I want to see him lead the team on scoring drives in the second half.

Just when you start to get excited, they stick the dagger right back into your heart.

Way to let this ##### team drive the length of the field with ease on their first drive.

Absolute worst ### whipping I have seen the Raiders defense take in my life. It's not the stats, or the score, but how easy it has come.

I'm glad to see Jason Campbell is getting a little window to prove himself again with Cleveland; he works hard and he deserves it.

I see McFragile took his usual spot on the bench during today's game. I suppose cutting him right now would be too much to ask.

You have obviously forgot about this beauty: http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2009101105/2009/REG5/raiders@giants?icampaign=GC_schedule_rr#menu=highlights&tab=recap

And this turd: http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2008101204/2008/REG6/raiders@saints?icampaign=GC_schedule_rr#tab=recap

Let's not forget this gem: http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2007122305/2007/REG16/raiders@jaguars?icampaign=GC_schedule_rr#tab=recap

This is clearly the worst loss of the season, and very disappointing considering they were just establishing some respect. The defense came out flat for whatever reason. I can't help wondering whether Chip had a book on Tarver's tendencies from their days facing each other in college. Hayden got scorched, so it will be interesting to see how he responds.

I am really starting to question whether Pryor is the answer at QB. He does not see the field very well and is very indecisive on plays. His limitations make the offense very predictable at this point. I would like to see Olsen use more boot leg passes from under center (like the Texans), which also lend to Pryor's skills.

In general the team took a major step backwards. They travel to the east coast next week to face the GMen, which has usually been a formula for a blow out loss. If they compete and keep the game close, I will be happy.

Can't get too high after a win, or too low after a loss.

This is a major rebuild year for us. If we come out of this year with an actual DIRECTION for next year (loads of 1 year contracts on this squad), I'll be very happy. Feels like we should keep around 75% of our brand new defense who have played much better than anyone expected (save today's performance).

Offense, though, is totally a different story. Sure Pryor is exciting but I'm not a huge fan of QBs who can't really throw. He's an absolute necessity behind center THIS YEAR with that Swiss cheese o-line. We get a healthy, and DEEP, o-line next year, then we can put an actual QB behind center. And the WRs...I really like Streater as our clutch possession guy, and Moore is ok as a #3 WR, but we need to sign a real WR1 at some point.

Overall, though, they currently have exactly as many wins as I expected at this point in the season. And they have looked much better overall this season than I could have ever imagined. Still optimistic going into next year's Mega-Cap-Space year. Maybe most importantly, our coach and GM appear to know what they are doing.

Worst loss in a lifetime? Please, only if you are a baby toddler. We have a top ten or twenty list of embarrassing losses that can rival anybody. Yes, that's a bit of a brag. ;)

I thought we were finally over the laughing stock phase. I thought we were competing and fighting tooth and nail for improbable wins over legit opponents. That's what I heard in the pregame interviews of Dennis Allen and Terrelle Pryor. The expectation wasn't just to beat Philadelphia, but to go to 5-4 the next week and so on and so on.

What a faceplant! These guys needed to come back down to earth and recognize that each game is different. Learn some humility maybe? There's no carryover of momentum from one game to the next. Hopefully this is the low point. But a 10AM game coming in New York and we know it won't be easy.

A few days ago, I would have given us a puncher's chance going into Jersey this week. Not anymore. The Giants have won 2 in a row, are playing better on defense, are coming off a bye and we may not have Pryor. Eli may go for 400+. Could be another ugly one.

We're gonna get swept by the NFC East, BTW. Already lost to WAS and PHI. The Giants are this week, and we're @ DAL on Thanksgiving.

I suppose if McGloin does get the nod that the Raiders aren't lucky enough to have him be the next Keenum and play darn good.

Shifting through the ashes of the Eagle debacle, I can find very little to be optimistic about. (Is it just me, or has the NFC East absolutely owned the Raiders the past decade?) The defense came out flat and got scorched. It will be interesting to see how Hayden responds to his dismal performance. One thing that really bugged me last week was watching the Raiders get into a 3 man rush when the Eagles were 3 and long. The defense didn't even disguise the rush by sugaring defenders. They would get burned every time because they didn't get pressure, giving Foles plenty of time to scan the field and find an open receiver.

Other negatives:

1. The Raiders have yet to win a road game this year

2. They lost two home games thus far

3. 5 of the last 8 are on the road

4. Remaining home games: Broncos, Chiefs, and Titans

Pryor has not shown as much progress as I had hoped over the past couple of weeks. Connor Barwin said that the strategy was to slow rush Pryor and keep him in the pocket, or force Pryor to his left. This strategy proved very effective and left the Raiders offense impotent. I am not sure if the offensive approach is limited due to Pryor or the coaching staff's confidence in Pryor. Either way, the staff has to install a more diverse offense. I would like to see more boot leg passes like the Texans run, but that would require they be stubborn with the run. I am also noticing that Pryor's decision making is very slow at times. He holds the ball way too long. I think he has trouble with multiple reads from the pocket.

This is about the time the Raiders of the past decade have went into a shell and layed some real turds like the ones I posted above. Allen has said all week that this locker room is different. We will see. I am just hoping we put a competitive product on the field the final 8.

Kind of burns seeing McFadden's hammy flare up again, while seeing the Rams draft Zac Stacy in the 5th round this year, all the while our 4th round pick Tyler Wilson languishes on the practice squad. Nice job drafting there Reggie.

The good news is that we will not have to worry about DMC next season. And, the Raiders are going to be have some $ next season to actually rebuild the team and not buy bargain players.

Is it time to give McGloin some playing time? I was excited about Pryor earlier in the season but he has regressed in my opinion.

Jennings has been playing great the past couple of weeks. When McFadden comes back I would hope that Jennings remains the starter. Jennings has looked much better then McFadden this season.

Pryor just cost us a win with a poor throw. Sigh. Well, we have the draft to look forward too I guess. :kicksrock:
Terrible throw, but I also put part of the blame on the play calling. The Raiders never even attempt to throw the ball down the field. Everything is within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage and they try that quick slant constantly. Was only a matter of time before teams started jumping that route. Have given away some games that should have been won, Redskins and yesterday in particular. And the last wild card spot in the AFC is wide open.

This is an issue I brought up in my last post. Is the limited play calling due to Pryor's limitations or the staff? I think they must start allowing Pryor to throw the ball down field to get a better evaluation of his potential. I need to watch the game, but as of now I am of the mind that the Raiders must draft a QB early next year because they do not have a franchise QB on their current roster.

My impressions watching the coaches tape:

  • We left a lot of yards on the field first half. Pryor's leg injury left him unable to take advantage of some openings in the defense early. Ford looks like he is scared to field a punt. He let an early one roll an extra 10 yards rather than pick it up. I would like to see the Raiders be a little more daring with TJones. Let him return more of the deep kicks and showcase some of his speed.
  • Offensive felt a little too cute. We had some success running the ball. I do not know why we didn't stick it more. Most glaring was when we had the ball 1st and goal at the GMen's one and could not punch it in.
  • Passing game is woeful. We lack a true #1WR and I have my doubts that Moore is anything but than a borderline #2WR. He dropped 3 passes in the first half that really hurt the offense (granted one was tough, but the great ones get those). Streeter makes an occasional "Ooooo"catch but he is not a force. We lack a money receiver, one that puts the fear of god into a secondary and makes the tough catch.
  • Special teams; not really. The units have really been up and down this year. Jennings and TJ have provide some spark, and we got a punt block to set up a score. But we also gave up a score with a blocked punt. We take away; then we giveth.
In sum the Raiders just aren't good enough to leave yards on the field. The offense has been relatively impotent all year. We have exceeded 20 points in just two game this year (thanks to TDs set up be the defense/special teams). I am not willing to put a fork in Pryor just yet, but if he can't run at full speed we may as well play McGloin---be stubborn with the run game and give him some 3 step patterns and play action passes, then let him air it out a few times. Let's see what the kid's got.

As mentioned, the running game looked much better. Jennings ran with a passion that has sorely been missing. The run game also got a boost from Watson's return. I really like what I saw. He got schooled badly a couple of times, but he has great feet and laid the wood on his down blocks. He will be fine on pass blocking.

Defensively we desperately need a pass rushing DE, and some beef in the middle that can get a push. Sio needs to beef up if he wants to play the strong side. I think he would be a force playing in space. Justin Hunter is too damn small to be playing the DL. He is a project that may pan out as a pass rush specialist, but he is on the field too much. Simms and Barrnet are solid, and Roach's game would improve with more beef up front.

One of my very favorite Raiders as a child.

Casper and then Christensen. Love the Raiders TE's of that era. Difference makers. I thought Zach Miller was going to be the next great one...

Rotoworld:

Terrelle Pryor (knee) is listed as questionable for Week 11 after a limited practice Friday.
Coach Dennis Allen revealed Pryor "wasn't feeling as good (Friday) as he did on (Thursday)," and those covering the team expect Matt McGloin to be the Raiders' starting quarterback against the Texans. Even in the unlikely scenario Pryor does start, Allen has been publicly open to the idea that Pryor could be pulled early in the game if he demonstrated knee troubles. This is an obvious situation to avoid in Week 11 fantasy lineups.

Matt McGloin handled all of the first-team reps at Raiders practice Friday.
Coach Dennis Allen isn't giving up on the idea of Terrelle Pryor (questionable, knee) starting against the Texans, but the Raiders' beat writers all expect McGloin to get the nod. "You never know. (Pryor) may feel great tomorrow," Allen said following Friday's practice. "We're still preparing him."

RIP Todd C,

One of the all time great Raider TE's. 57 yo is too young to die.
RIP Todd. A great player, and person from what we know from a distance. Seriously under rated for what he, and Al did to innovate the TE position in the NFL. I still remember the In Todd We trust poster I had growing up in the 80's....brings a tear to my eyes for real

Do we think Matt McGloin (wanna call him Pat McGroin...thanks, Don Draper) can take the job and run with it?

I have my doubts. I think he's a little too small. Reminded me a little of Flutie (I know he's not THAT small). Seems like he's gonna have trouble seeing around all that's going on around him.

Still in Pryor's corner (tho I didn't see the last game). I think he brings a lot more tools to the table. Just needs experience...a lot more experience.

Rotoworld:

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Sunday's start at Houston will be "a big barometer" on whether Matt McGloin can "supplant" Terrelle Pryor as the Raiders' starting quarterback.
In other words, the Raiders aren't committed to Pryor in the least. It makes sense because Pryor has struggled so mightily over his last four starts, but also a reminder that GM Reggie McKenzie didn't pick Pryor. Al Davis did. The fact that Raiders coaches "love" McGloin also gives him a leg up, obviously depending on his performance. He's facing the NFL's No. 1 pass defense on the road.

Gotta see more of mcgloin. And whytf are we letting the clock run out and head in to the locker room at half time. I hate that ####.

Wow. I'll take it. Dare I say the offense won this game?? Nice defense stand at the end.

Gotta roll with mcgloin next week right?
