If I am understanding the Raider's cap situation correctly they are slightly over the cap at this time. They will save 10 million by releasing DHB and Kelly. And another 14 million by releasing Seymore. Is that correct?I also believe they will save a few million once they release McClain. They would then be under the cap by about 27 million, which would give them a good opportunity to sign some much needed help.Is my understanding off base?

Well that is a lot more dire. Florio was speculating that Palmer might be willing to renegotiate to stay on the west coast. Maybe get him down to 9 million, or trade him.That could leave us with some money for FAs. It is sure going to be nice when the off season discussion doesn't center around cap room.

20% Mitchell, Hagan - I think these guys will want to go somewhere else where they'll have more opportunity for playing time. I believe Mitchell will get a chance to start somewhere else. Otherwise he would be great to have again as a backup. Hagan is at the bottum of what is currently a deep group of WRs.

I would be surprised if they were not able to bring back Mitchell cheap if they so chose. He is hurt a lot and really what has he ever done? Rotoworld ranked the likely free agents to be at each position and he was ranked 29 among safeties.

Knapp didnt know how to use a player's strengths. Streater and Criner were rookies and Ford missed the season. Moore battled an injury while both he and DHB werent used appropriately. I still like our WRs. Like I said I believe DHB is willing to restructure his contract. Jennings will get a big contract, when you see what he signs for you'll probably be glad we didnt make that move. Best to spend on the offensive line and defense first and see if any of our current WRs breakout this year.

And Jennings asking price is (drumroll)... 14 million. Forget about trying to upgrade our WRs. The focus this year should be on both lines, the corners, and hopeing to somehow also get a good MLB.

Just my opinion, but I'd rather pay up and keep Palmer at QB than go into the season with with Pryor at QB. The kid is just painful to watch throw the football...

Interesting move. I'm all for it if it means the Raiders retain a player without impacting the cap, and maybe get a starter or a contributor out of it. Article also references that Jones was originally recruited to college as a CB as well. I'm at a loss - but does anybody remember any other player making a move like this? I mean outside of Troy Brown

Its not really official that Jones will move to corner. Its just that when Reggie was asked in an interview he said that he thought of Jones as a CB while scouting him for the draft and was pushing for Jones to make the switch. Its not really McKenzie's call though. That falls on Allen and the rest of the coaches. Yes though, Jones was a college CB who switched to RB after his team was devasted by injuries at RB. He did so well at RB he stayed at that position until he was drafted. He can play CB but playing it well enough to actually contribute in the NFL as a CB might never happen. I consider it a risky move because I believe that Jones can definately contribute as a 3rd down type RB if he's simply given a fair opportunity. Knapp didnt want to play him but we all know about Knapp and his inability to change his scheme. A creative OC could certainly find ways to use Jones on offense. Jones has the athletic ability of a CB and might be able to successfully play that position in the NFL. Yet it seems like a risky move with a good chance of failure to me. Jones isnt as likely to succeed as Huff was. If it works out at least we'll have a guy who can play in all 3 phases of the game, special teams, offense, and defense. If it doesnt work Jones will have wasted a training camp or two, thus the risk.

I'll go on record as rooting for us to take Eric Fisher. We are still going to need to outscore teams for the next couple of years, so one star defensive prospect won't make a dent at this point. Fisher is a guy you can throw in at LT and forget about it for the next ten years.

And we might (MIGHT!) be able to trade down a spot or two and still get him.

I get a chubby picturing Fisher at LT and Veldheer at RT with Wiz anchoring the middle. That has the makings of the start of a dominant O-line like the one a lot of us grew up watching in the 70s. And Sparano is the man to mold them.

Would love to have a stud LT that lives up to what we thought Gallery was supposed to turn out to be. I think in today's NFL, it's easier to win with a very good offensive and an ok defense. I'd be very happy spending a 1st on a position in the trenches. .

I just think that Warmack would add more to the team than anyone else and I think he's the safest pick in the draft. That said, I wouldnt be disappointed at all to get Joekel, Fisher, or (if we trade down) another first round OL choice. I know Madden was there when Mark Davis interviewed McKenzie and Madden is on the record saying he believes you should start building your team with the offensive line. Al Davis believed in starting with the corners but we all know Al was a defense and special teams guy. McKenzie seemed to put an emphasis on the line last year with his top FA aquisition and top draft choice both being offensive linemen. I'd like to see him continue that emphasis until we get the right 5 guys starting on our OL. I know Allen is a defensive guy and we have a lot of holes on defense he wants to see filled. We'll see what happens. It will be easier if we can trade down and aquire a second round pick. Al Davis loved to make draft day trades. McKenzie traded down once last year though the 7th round pick he got for doing so didnt make the team. We'll see if he trades down again and what he can get this time.

Starting to like Floyd more and more. I think he will be better than Star. Only way Warmack makes any sense is if they trade down first.

They caught a heart condition in Star Lotulelei. Floyd is now probably the consensus #1 DT in the draft but he's more of a pass rushing DT or 3-4 DE than a run stopper. I dont like Floyd at pick 3, that's too early.If I had to rank 10 rookies for us right now.1. Warmack OG2. Fisher OT3. Joekel OT4. Smith QB5. Moore DE/OLB6. Barkley QB7. Werner DE/OLB8. Jones OLB/DE9. Johnson OT10. Jordan OLB/DESome notable absentees that should be on our radar if we trade down are Lotulelei DT, Milliner CB, Mingo OLB/DE, Floyd DT/DE, Cooper OG, Rhodes CB, and Ansah DE. Milliner is expected to undergo shoulder surgery after the combine and I just briefed on Lotulelei's heart condition. Shows though that we could trade down to pick 20 or lower and still get a player I like. I do feel there is a notable drop after the top 3 or 4 players on my list though.

It is very possible that Brady's new deal will allow the Raider's some decent leverage to get Palmer to renegotiate a more cap friendly contract. Brady's contact will pay him 9 million next season. If we can get Palmer to accept the same deal it will free up 4 to 5 million next season.

Milliner ran a 4.31 40 at the combine. If his shoulder checks out he could be the first defensive player off the board. I still feel he's a much riskier pick than the top 3 OL prospects but if we go defense then Milliner makes the most sense right now. Star Lotulelei might be back in the mix if his heart checks out and those are the only two defensive players I feel are deserving of the third pick.

agreed. I'd prefer a proper trade down and pick up another first or second rounder maybe for somebody that really wants Geno. But this draft has only a handful of sure thing top 10 talents. Warmack is one of them. We need to be safe with this pick and can't afford a guy that isn't providing an immediate impact. I'm salivating too over that potential left side of the line and the return of the PBS should help the entire unit immensely. Who cares how sexy it looks on draft day?

Warmack OG - note didnt participate in bench press.2 and 3 Fisher and Joekel OTs - I'd say they are neck and neck now that the combine effect is cooling off. Both did good and Fisher was expected to look a little better[Tier 2] 4. Lotulelei DT (heart) - note wasnt allowed to participate in drills5. Smith QB - solid well rounded combine. hard to find a weakness6. Milliner CB (shoulder) - completely put to rest the questioning of his speed[Tier 3]7. Barkley QB (shoulder) - note didnt participate in drills8. Jones OLB/DE (spine) - note didnt participate in drills.9. Johnson OT - wow great combine10. If you want to build a winner try following the example of the Superbowl champion Ravens and draft the best player available instead of drafting to fill the biggest need.
