Report: Oakland Raiders eyeing 50,000-seat stadium

By Kevin Patra NFL.com

Published: July 16, 2013 at 06:20 a.m

The Oakland Raiders want to build a new 50,000-seat stadium at the site of their current home, the Oakland Tribune reported Monday.

The capacity, which would be the smallest in the NFL, was determined after a team-commissioned study determined the demand in the area.

"Both sides are conducting studies to determine the demand and financial viability of the project." Mike Taylor, the team's director of public affairs, said in a statement about the study's findings.

According to David Stone, a consultant working with Oakland and Alameda County (Calif.) officials on stadium construction, the new stadium would cost approximately $800 million. The Raiders have proposed contributing about $300 million, Stone said, with the remaining amount to be funded by the NFL ($200 million) and public financing (about $300 million).

The Raiders' lease on O.co Coliseum expires after the 2013 NFL season. Raiders owner Mark Davis said in June he wanted the team to stay in Oakland, but he doesn't want to sign another short-term lease at the Coliseum without plans in place for a new stadium.

this sounds like a best case scenario to me. A SMALLER, NEW stadium that keeps the Raiders in Oakland, gets us a new, state-of-the-art facility, and a capacity that matches the demand and affordability of a city like Oakland. Sign me up.
No thanks.

"capacity that matches the demand"

Um that may be true, but it is only because the Raiders have been so bad of late. The point at which they start to challenge for division titles and have playoff runs that 50,000 seat stadium will not be any close to matching the ticket demand.

A stadium that small also take them completely out of consideration to ever host a Super bowl.

Give me easy access, a good team and a decent, safe environment for my family, and we'll go maybe once/year. The Raider experience offers none of those right now.

There's been one Super Bowl in the Bay Area in 48 years. I don't think that's much of a driver.

The criteria you list to attend a Raider game died after they moved to LA, and unfortunately they brought the thug mentality when they moved back. That ship has sailed, my friend.

As to point two, the fact that the Niners are hosting the SB in 2015 points to why it has been so long since a SB has been hosted in the bay area. While it may not be a primary driver it certainly should be a consideration.

Fausty always bringing good cheer.
LOL, I edited my post, because at first I thought La Canfora was taking a few shots at us, but after reading through his article it did have some hints of optimism, despite the headline that felt like it was "kicking us while we were still down."

I am confident that the ship will get corrected in the right direction and that the future will be brighter. I am looking forward to seeing the progress, and would be thrilled to see Bridgewater or Clowney join the team next year.

– Terrelle Pryor is throwing the ball with the kind of zip, accuracy and touch that weren’t evident much his first two seasons, let alone during offseason workouts.
Chalk it up to a player that refuses to be told that he can’t succeed as a quarterback in the NFL and works as hard as any of the 88 players on the roster.
“He’s continued to get better,” Allen said. “He’s worked extremely hard at it and anytime you get a talented player that works extremely hard, he’s going to get better. We’re doing some things with him to try to take advantage of his talents. He’s responding to that. He’s going to continue to work. He’s competing. The guy is a competitor, so he’s trying to do everything he can to help this team.”
On one play, Pryor dropped back and fit a ball into tight coverage, right into the waiting arms of receiver Juron Criner. This was a high-difficulty pass that required Pryor to get it over linebacker Keenan Clayton’s hands without launching it too far and into the arms of the defensive back.
“That was definitely a good pass for me,” Pryor said.
In fact, he had numerous good passes and very few that were off the mark.
By Pryor’s estimation: “I missed about three or four balls out of a lot, 83 throws, 90 throws.”
Allen said he isn’t thinking too far down the road in terms of converting Pryor to another position if his progress stalls.
“Our focus is trying to train him as a quarterback,” Allen said. “That’s what we’re working on right now.”
First time I have read anything from Cork that was complimentary to Pryor. Good stuff.

Putting him in a somewhat conservative read-option offense like Wilson's in Seattle wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, would it?

I read another report that Pryor has worked all offseason with a QB guru and that this is the first time he's EVER had coaching on his throwing mechanics. I found that hard to believe, but Pryor went on to say that the work has resulted in much better accuracy and confidence heading into camp. Now these TC reports are trickling in supporting that prior (no pun) news. If this is true,

A. WTF? How can a guy like this with flawed mechanics go so long without formal help? And

B. This portends very well for Pryor. Dude is oozing with talent if he can just find more accuracy. I'm a fan of his and hope he really has found a way to improve his passing control.

Gonna have to put the "Tyler Wilson is our savior" talk on the back burner. According to Jerry Mac, he is losing ground for the 3RD QB spot to Matt McGloin from Penn State. Pryor is comfortably #2.

QB Situation: The more I watch Terrelle Pryor the more I want to see him play in preseason games. He has been much more accurate as I have continued to attend practice, really showing improvement with every day. An area which is essential with a young passer. Pryor is a special athlete that would give the Raiders a lot of different options on offense. He threw a ball on Saturday that only several players in the NFL could make -a 60 yard strike to rookie Brice Butler for a TD. Pryor is playing confident, and doesn’t look scared in the pocket. He just needs to continue to develop his ability to get rid of the football. I’m not a Flynn fan because of his lack of arm strength, and his average athleticism. To me Pryor gives them a legitimate chance to win football games in 2013. I would love to see him running the option with Darren McFadden – Raider coaches really should take some notes from the Niners and just tailor the offense around a QB with special qualities. Pryor gives the Raiders a chance to not only be different, but win games.
This guy says Pryor is looking more accurate. Who knows, maybe TP6 will shock the world afterall.

On NFLN tonight.

There will be players i will be interested in watching all 4 quarters of this one, a sobering thought.

Looking forward to seeing Murray, all the tight ends, Sio Moore, and all the QBs. I doubt Watson is playing, I know Hayden isn't. Wish there were more D-linemen I was interested in.

The sixth rounder with the girl's name and character concerns seems to be getting some good reviews in camp. With all the injuries to the DL, he should see a lot of snaps I would think. Also curious about Bass, since he's noted as a good pash rusher and we are sorely lacking in that dept.

Christo Bilukidi? I don't think that's a girls name. Maybe Stacy McGee? Anyway, I think our starting DL aren't even on the team yet. I figure Reggie will be active scouting other teams for when they make roster cuts and pounce. It's not so much the injuries to the DL I'm worried about, but the overall lack of talent and depth. I'm pretty sure that worries coach Allen too.

If there is one key thing to watch for tonight, it's the running game. Reports from practices are that the O line hasn't been very effective opening holes for the running backs. Considering how banged up our D-Line is looking, I have to take that news as glass half empty for our offensive line.

I'm out of the country, need to get on a pirate website to watch tonight's game. Anyone know a good link? TIA

By and large I agree with your observation about the DL. It is the biggest concern and area of need. L. Houston is definitely a starter and a player to build around. With lots luck Carter will remain healthy and provide a pass rush, and and at least one player will emerge as a capable option at DT. More than likely the wear and tear of the season will grind this unit down and we will be in the Clowney sweepstakes.

I know it's only preseason, but why can't we start fast for a change instead of a sack for a fumble. Ugh.

Making believe it never happened.... :)

Nice drive by Matty. I like the kid. He's not going to remind anyone of Marino, but he's poised and fundamentally sound.

At this point, I'll settle for a QB who doesn't hurt us.

Pryor looks good too. :oldunsure: Against the Cowboys' #2's, but he is playing with #2's also.

I never thought he would be an NFL QB. I would love nothing more than to be dead wrong. The read-option is en vogue and he is well-suited for it.

Edit: Nevermind. LOL.

McGloin... bing, bang, boom... right down the field. TD pass.

Wilson has gone from steal of the draft to not making the roster.

My overall thought is the team looks better coached. Defensive players staying in lanes. No false starts. Flynn and Pryor got some first downs, moved the ball.

Looks like we may need to get creative to get some pass rush, not a big surprise. Missing 3/4 of our D-line, so, ya know.....but still, Houston is more of a pressure/effort guy, Sio Moore looks like he has a ton of speed. Hatcher flashed a little bit, be nice to root for a guy wearing #93. I hated Kelly.

I am still a Denarius guy, it was nice to see him get a quick catch and use his wiggle a little bit. I still think he flashes more natural ability than any other WR.

The coaching staff seems to be wisely going dink and dunk. And we have four guys that can break a long one: DMC, Reece, Moore, Ford. It's the last chance for Ford, I hope he can answer the bell. We could use him.

The flip side to the offense, is defenses will crowd the line, daring us to go deep, and inhibiting the running game. We need to find ways for teams to stay back.

Pryor: Still seems green, but looks a mile better than before, as the TC reports suggest. It may be a longshot, but I would have no problem with Pryor getting a series every quarter or so, could be an interesting way to keep the defense off balance. We have little to lose, so why not? If defenses have to gameplan for two different styles of QB, that is a good thing.

Rashad Jennings will help the team. Murray, so far, so good. The RB depth is dramatically better.

There has been talk about Rivera lately, as a move TE. Just not sure if he can get on the field as a base TE enough to help. I am a Kasa guy, whether he makes the tem, or is on the PS, I hope he gets some time to develop.

The TEs and WRs were doing a good job blocking down field, looks like they have been emphasizing it in TC.

Man, this is a whole new team. Gotta keep a roster up on the laptop to keep up.

Really rooting for Alex Barron. Love to see him displace Barnes.

I would guess there is some creative roster shuffling at final cuts. Maybe some guys get cut, and brought back after week 1, so their contract isn't guaranteed, and we pick up some final cuts from other teams. Especially offensive and defensive linemen. I would set the over/under on new faces from other teams at 3. The final five spots of the roster may not be settled by week 1.

Given all the doom and gloom this off season it was nice to see the Raiders play competitive football, even if it is preseason. Everything about this team felt more efficient than last year. The offense converted on a majority of their 3rd down opportunities which I think will be a key to our success. The defense played solid pass coverage despite the lack of a pass rush, and the special teams were solid. And only 4 penalties!

The fumble by Flynn appeared to be due to Dmac's failure to pick up the blitz. He stepped to the right and never saw the LB coming. Jennings and Murray look like solid options if DMac misses time. I liked that the staff is the running the read option when Pryor is in and playing to his strength's. His interception gives us insight into why Allen says Pryor "has a ways to go." I am hopeful that Pryor will continue to work hard and eliminate these mistakes.

McGloin has some nice pocket presence even though he has some weird mechanics. He played the same way at Penn St--semi scrabbling, eluding the rush then throwing the ball off his back foot. But he usually hit a receiver down field. Not pretty but effective.

My biggest concern is the lack of a pass rush, which showed up at times in the game. They need to shore the position up to be competitive!

It will be interesting to see how they perform this week on the road against a very good offensive unit.

QB Flynn is uncontested starter. Pryor likely to get promoted to backup while the two rookies battle it out for a likely roster spot for a project. Could see the 4th guy on the practice squad.

RB DMac and Reece are the best players on offense. Jennings looks healthy and like he can still play. Like the kid Murray. I prefer Williams over a backup FB or Stewart. Maybe that 5th guy isn't signed yet.

WR Moore, Streater, and Ford are lead contenders for the first three spots. Criner should return. Cribbs and surprise draft pick Butler are leading candidates to round out the group. Keep an eye on Session,Vernon, and Holmes if someone struggles or gets hurt.

TE I think both Ausberry and Gordan return but that means we won't bring in a veteran. At least one of the two draft picks should make the team. The other may end up on practice squad or IR.

OL Veldheer, Wiz, and Barnes are 3 starters. Guard is a mess (why I wanted Warmack). I've said before that Brisiel is damaged goods. The guaranteed salary this year was as big a mistake as the original signing. Nix currently has slight lead over Bergstrom at LG. If Barron plays well, might be better to move Barnes inside. Watson was a project, now he,s an injured project.

DT Weakest part of the team. To think a couple years ago we had 4 good DTs, now none. Walker will start. Sims if healthy likely to start also. Bilukidi leads a pack of backups that could all be replaced. Hopefully we sign someone and put McGee on the practice squad.

DE Houston is pretty good. Carter should have enough left in the tank to at least split time. Hunter has experience but is really backup material. Bass and Crawford are in contention for what will be at least one more roster spot.

LB Roach will start in the middle. On the outside Kevin Burnett is one likely starter while Moore is pushing to win the other side. I still think Maiava, Burris, and the younger Burnett are the backups. Clayton could return to play on ST and Gaither is back in camp in case the others aren't healthy or struggle either on or off the field.

S I don't think we miss Huff much if at all. Branch, Woodson, and Young are roster locks. The 4th spot is wide open. Ross could return as a safety or maybe the 4th guy isn't signed yet.

CB good news is we have really improved the depth chart at CB. Hayden, Porter, and Jenkins will battle for the starting jobs. The loser will battle with Hanson, Jones, And Adams for the nickel. Chekwa is in contention with the others for the 4th and 5th spots. I'd like to even see us keep 6 this year but don't expect it. I think we can afford to let Hanson go but other guys need to stay healthy, especially Adams and Chekwa who seem often injured. Jones needs to be on the team because he's a ST gamer and talented enough to become a good CB.

SIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Thought he was a great pick.
So did he. Said he was the best LB in the draft. I like the confidence.

Just nice to see a #55 for us who isn't a useless d-bag.
Rotoworld:

Coach Dennis Allen said he plans to use third-round SLB Sio Moore the same way the Broncos use Von Miller.
Allen was Denver's defensive coordinator the year they drafted Miller. Moore has been lining up with his hand in the dirt on passing downs, and Allen sees that as a role he can "potentially serve." Moore possesses dangerous pass-rush skills, which showed up in the preseason opener on his sack of Tony Romo. The Raiders finished 31st in the league in sacks last season.

Rotoworld with a few rays of sunshine:

Raiders LT Jared Veldheer has been diagnosed with a torn triceps, and will undergo surgery.
It's a staggering blow for the league's worst team. Veldheer is almost certainly done for the season, but per beat writer Vittorio Tafur, the Raiders are "holding out hope" he can return at some point. He's a candidate for injured reserve/designated to return. Losing Veldheer is devastating enough, but the fact that he's apparently being replaced by human false start Alex Barron elevates the situation to true disaster. The Raiders might not win a game this season.

ESPN AFC West blogger Bill Williamson calls Raiders QB Tyler Wilson the "most disappointing rookie" in the division.
Per Williamson, it appears Wilson is "falling further behind the Raiders' quarterback pack every day." Wilson fell behind UDFA Matt McGloin earlier this month, and has struggled mightily with the mental side of the game. Wilson was 3-of-6 for 28 yards in last week's preseason opener. At least so far, the Raiders have perhaps the weakest draft class in the league. That's a major problem, as they easily have the least impressive collection of veterans.

aw ####! Alex Barron your starting LT? :wall:

Do we really need to see anymore of Flynn? Time to promote Pryor to starting QB. And cut DMC as a cap casualty. Seriously, what have we got to lose?

Well that really sucks, but I would love to make this source put some money where their mouth is. The Raiders will not go winless. The source really needs to get a grip.

Reece is one of my favorite players in the league, it would be fun to see him get touches at RB, Hback & TE again this year but I get the feeling he will again be relegated to blocking. If so what a waste.

Ford used to be a real rising star but he has since evaporated due to injury, high hopes for him this year.

His value is as a pass receiver. He's not a halfback. It'd be a waste to not use him in the passing game.

He's the most talented receiving fullback in the game today. To not use him in that capacity would be a serious error in judgement.

Well to clarify, I meant H-back, as in the hybrid fullback or TE in the backfield role.

Actually I thought he was a terrific runner last year, there are a few great fullbacks out there who could really be effective runners if given more of a chance; Reece is one for sure (IMO).

From Rotoworld:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Raiders LT Jared Veldheer's triceps is only partially torn, and that doctors believe he'll be "available for much of the season." It's a rare bit of good news for the Raiders, though we still don't have a timetable for Veldheer's return. "Much of the season" would presumably be more than injured reserve/designated to return would allow. Veldheer wouldn't be eligible to return from IR until Week 8. Fill-in LT Alex Barron is a disaster waiting to happen, so the Raiders have all the incentive in the world to get Veldheer back on the field as soon as possible.

Watching the replay and I've only seen the 1's so far.

Our defensive line got zero pressure on Brees. It was comical. Can't expect the DBs to cover for 8 seconds.

But the O-line may have looked even worse. Gonna be a loooooooong season.

Here's hoping Veldheer comes back soon, Barron and the rest of the OL looked terrible!

I'm mentally preparing for one of the worst seasons ever.
