*2014-15 Hot Stove Thread: The Padres won it I guess (2 Viewers)

Yanks sign Miller to 4yr/36m deal. I like that move alot. I guess that means they didnt wanna spend the extra $$ on DRob

$36M is a lot of money for a guy who's thrown about 130 good IP
I was thinking the same thing. I can't seem to get the stench of six years of being dog #### awful out of my nose when it comes to Andrew Miller.

markakis does so little and is in decline.....I really hate him as a player. little power, no speed, obp skills waning.

For a team with a payroll like NYY's, I don't think it's that bad. Miller's pretty clearly meant for the pen and has been a different pitcher since his conversion, and his peripherals last year was absurdly good. A "setup" guy who can wipe out both lefties and righties is a valuable weapon.

I like the Miller deal, Yankees have stacks of cash to burn so securing a high end reliever for four years seems like a good investment. However, I think expecting Miller to regress vs righties is probably expected. I think with his frame, motion, and delivery he's going to be ridiculous against lefties. But allowing a .446opOPS vs righties (and he was almost as good the year before) seems almost impossible to repeat year after year. His career oppOPS vs righties was north of .875 after 2012 and now it's .787.

Not sure how many teams would have gone four years but for the Yankees it's only a bad move if Miller is a complete bust after say the first year. I think at worst he's an above average option over the course of that contract.

The Red Sox did a lot of work with him though, including just going to a four-seam/slider repertoire, the latter obviously being his best pitch and deadly against both hands.

His swinging strike rate and k/bb ratios are absurd. Against everyone. One upside to being hurt so much is that he doesn't have as much mileage on his arm as most 29 yo's.

And it's less than they gave Soriano!

Seriously though if you're going to spend the most money on a reliever ever, are they really that far from spending an extra $15/yr for a top of the line starter?

No, they aren't. But the top shelf starter has to want to sign there. As was stated earlier in the thread, the Astros probably feel like they are 2 years out from competing with the young core they have. This off-season will likely have some "piece" signings that don't make sense for a team that is likely to finish in the bottom half of the AL West in 2015. But next off-season it wouldn't be surprising to see them as major players for a top tier FA or two, setting up for a gel period in 2016 in prep for a run at 2017. It is a process.

I'm feeling a Lester-to-Cubs vibe in the air today.
I don't see Chicago being in the running for Lester, least likely of all teams to land him in my opinion. Boston will be comfortable matching whatever the Cubs put out there. If he doesn't end up in Boston then I think it is LAD or NYY.

I was feeling fine about 6/140. Go ahead and overpay. Reel in the big fish. Sure, we'll complain about the signing a couple years from now, but that's how the system works these days. But now there's talk of a 7-year deal for 150+. If that's what's on the table, let another team live with that contract.

Jason Hammels back to the Cubs for only 2/18. End of that rotation looks solid but unspectacular with Wood, Hammel, Hendrick. Pushes Wada into the bullpen though, where I think he'll shine, along with Justin Turner and maybe CJ Edwards. Nab an ace and we're cookin with gas.

That 7 year talk scares the poop outta me as a Sox fan.

Rosenthal says it is between the Cubs and Giants now for Lester. Have to think his deal is going to be something close to 6/150 or even above. If it is really down to the Cubs and Giants and $150 is the number, I would be surprised if the Red Sox really offered the rumored 6/130+.

Lester agent Seth Levinson says idea of Red Sox being out and Giants, Cubs currently finalists "absolutely untrue"

To be fair, the Levinsons have every reason in the world to make people believe that as many teams as possible are still in on the bidding.

Why? It's not like they're going to stop spending in years 5-7.

But really, it seems Beane thinks Moss is finished as a player. Not sure if he's right, but every team/GM knew he was being shopped, and Wendle was the best offer they got. Makes me think quite a few other GM's also felt he was finished.

I've done zero research on Wendle so am mostly talking out of my backside and from the very limited reports I've read thus far, but I think Mark Ellis is the best you could hope for here.

WTF are the A's doing this offseason?
Working off a valuation system that nobody else has. I dont know if thats good or bad.
More like buying years of cost certainty/control where players they are trading have only a year or two left

And I think with Moss there was the concern coming off the surgery of not knowing when he would be ready next year

Well, they've locked up the prime years of Joey Wendle, so there's that
