I haven't read anything anywhere that states the Rays are slowing down the process to screw with the Cubs. Doesn't seem like their MO.

 
Doesn't it hurt the Rays more than the Cubs? If I'm a free agent, I'd more interested in knowing a team's manager than a team's assistants before I signed.

It's more that the luxury tax doesn't matter. The game is flush with cash and there's only a limited amount of things (FAs) that owners can spend it on. I read a couple articles recently that the Yankees could spend $500 million in salary and still easily break even. All of these teams are spending less on salary than they're capable. Even the A's and Rays.

Serious question, have they ever signed a meaningful free agent before mid-late December? This seems like a much more important time to get their ducks in order in the front office then worry about finding a manager later.

Like Butler, he's going to clog the DH position. And his ability to field is gone, as his is ability to hit lefties.

He's given a lot of value back the last couple years with his bad glovework, so obviously a move to the AL makes sense. It's a bit scary that the Marlins were pursuing him to presumably play 1B. He hits righties very well and still has power, but age 35 means he could fall off a cliff at any time imo.

As an A's fan, I think I'd rather have Butler, although the A's need more help hitting lefties. But he's also younger and has some chance to re-surge. It's OK. Not as bad as Cuddyer.

Gonna disagree with this. LaRoche has more power than Butler, draws a ton of walks when he's slumping, and his fielding isn't nearly as bad as advanced stats make you believe. UZR hates Freddie Freeman too and it rates Hosmer average, when he IMO is the best. I watch him a lot, he's still solid at 1B IMO.

I do agree that he is more of a platoon now but he's playable against lefties because of the walks and the power potential. Two year deal is fine for him, and he'll mash in that park. He did pick a ####ty division to go to though as He'll have to face some pretty good pitching. I probably like it better than Butler because it's one less year and I like the power in the AL, putting him behind Abreu as protection. When he's hot (and he's streaky as hell), that team will be that much better.

 
I like the Butler deal better because of the extra year. Not surprised he got more money per year than Butler but still seems like a muddled signing. I wasn't aware his defense had fallen off the cliff but if so I especially don't like the signing. A one dimensional DH that can't hit lefties. Didn't this already fail them once in Adam Dunn. At least they learned their lesson only to go 2 years out as Konerko burned them a little bit in the last two years of his deal.

They think Hanley can play SS in his 30's, I guess? I'm of the growing opinion that Cherington's a sneaky-terrible GM, this would add some further evidence.

I think the Ramirez signing is gonna be an epic failure. I like Pablo. Probably not worth the money but I think Boston fans are gonna love him. I dont HATE that signing.

Not a big fan of the money being dished out but it just seems to be the new market. We are kinda conditioned to think that $20M was the threshold reserved for super stud players but with Martin/Hanley/Sandoval all getting like 17-20M a year, $20M is the new $12-15M and the truly great players are all going to end up being 28-30M players going forward. Especially considering more and more players are getting locked up young so there is a lack of real class FAs.

Also not sure why people would think the Sox signed Hanley to be the SS. They know the fielding metrics etc. Much more likely they just use him in the OF and probably view him or Sandoval as future potential replacements at 1B for Napoli or to eventually take over DH when Ortiz retires.

Hes worth what the market says. Hes definitely worth more than Russell Martin.

I think his 5/90 deal was a product of the things you listed (poor metrics at SS, injury history). A few years ago, that would seem like a bargain contract for Hanley.

That's also because of his monster 2013. I reckon he likely won't reach those numbers again. Though, maybe with playing 81 games in Fenway ... who knows?
