It would be pretty pointless.I haven't read anything anywhere that states the Rays are slowing down the process to screw with the Cubs. Doesn't seem like their MO.
It's more that the luxury tax doesn't matter. The game is flush with cash and there's only a limited amount of things (FAs) that owners can spend it on. I read a couple articles recently that the Yankees could spend $500 million in salary and still easily break even. All of these teams are spending less on salary than they're capable. Even the A's and Rays. You guys are talking like MLB doesn't have a luxury tax, and that there's only been one team to-date that's really gone over it for an extended amount of time and by a considerable amount. LA blew through it this year, and they're already making noise about getting back under.
MLB owners don't want to get in an arms race with each other.
Already done.jfranco77 said:Or maybe the Rays are still waiting to fill Friedman's shoes before deciding on a manager?
Lol. Uhhhhhh I don't think that's a concern.Don Quixote said:Doesn't it hurt the Rays more than the Cubs? If I'm a free agent, I'd more interested in knowing a team's manager than a team's assistants before I signed.
lmao at the Rays signing free agentsDon Quixote said:Doesn't it hurt the Rays more than the Cubs? If I'm a free agent, I'd more interested in knowing a team's manager than a team's assistants before I signed.

Serious question, have they ever signed a meaningful free agent before mid-late December? This seems like a much more important time to get their ducks in order in the front office then worry about finding a manager later.Lol. Love that signing, he should do very well in that park.LaRoche to the Pale Hoes for 2/25.
Gonna disagree with this. LaRoche has more power than Butler, draws a ton of walks when he's slumping, and his fielding isn't nearly as bad as advanced stats make you believe. UZR hates Freddie Freeman too and it rates Hosmer average, when he IMO is the best. I watch him a lot, he's still solid at 1B IMO.Like Butler, he's going to clog the DH position. And his ability to field is gone, as his is ability to hit lefties.
He's given a lot of value back the last couple years with his bad glovework, so obviously a move to the AL makes sense. It's a bit scary that the Marlins were pursuing him to presumably play 1B. He hits righties very well and still has power, but age 35 means he could fall off a cliff at any time imo.
As an A's fan, I think I'd rather have Butler, although the A's need more help hitting lefties. But he's also younger and has some chance to re-surge. It's OK. Not as bad as Cuddyer.
red or white?rumors flying all over that Sox have signed Hanley ramirez. whoa

supposed to be a double with Sandoval but signing both makes no senserumors flying all over that Sox have signed Hanley ramirez. whoa
They think Hanley can play SS in his 30's, I guess? I'm of the growing opinion that Cherington's a sneaky-terrible GM, this would add some further evidence.supposed to be a double with Sandoval but signing both makes no senserumors flying all over that Sox have signed Hanley ramirez. whoa

Sandoval has agreement to go to the red sox for 5 years, close to 100M

So they are signing both him and Ramirez? Wow.

As does every Yankee fan prayI think the Ramirez signing is gonna be an epic failure. I like Pablo. Probably not worth the money but I think Boston fans are gonna love him. I dont HATE that signing.
the sox finished in last place last year. Theres other competition in the division besides the sox. Yanks have their own problems to worry about. As does every Yankee fan prayI think the Ramirez signing is gonna be an epic failure. I like Pablo. the guy gets hurt all the timenot sure how 5/90 can ever be an epic failure unless injuries take over.
So, in your opinon, what was Hanley worth on the open market? Also offensively Hanley is a stud at SS. Put those #s in the OF and hes less of a stud.
Read something that since 2012 his OPS would be 12th amongst OFers. Also offensively Hanley is a stud at SS. Put those #s in the OF and hes less of a stud.
Hes worth what the market says. Hes definitely worth more than Russell Martin. So, in your opinon, what was Hanley worth on the open market? Also offensively Hanley is a stud at SS. Put those #s in the OF and hes less of a stud.
like I said stud at SS, less of a stud in the OF. I never said he wasnt good.Read something that since 2012 his OPS would be 12th amongst OFers. Also offensively Hanley is a stud at SS. Put those #s in the OF and hes less of a stud.
I think his 5/90 deal was a product of the things you listed (poor metrics at SS, injury history). A few years ago, that would seem like a bargain contract for Hanley.Hes worth what the market says. I see you've been reading MAC's blog.the guy gets hurt all the timenot sure how 5/90 can ever be an epic failure unless injuries take over.
games played since 2011:
92
157
86
128
Hes now over 30

That's also because of his monster 2013. I reckon he likely won't reach those numbers again. Though, maybe with playing 81 games in Fenway ... who knows?like I said stud at SS, less of a stud in the OF. You might want to take into consideration that there are 3 OFers on the field at one time.like I said stud at SS, less of a stud in the OF.
