DH everywhere to increase the fantasy baseball player pool!
And add designated runners. Nobody wants to watch Ortiz's fat ### lumber around the bases.
A lot of high school state athletic associations allow for one Designated Runner per game. So there's a bunch of high school catchers who get pulled after they safely reach base. So if a catcher goes 3-for-4 from the plate, that DR can run for him three times. Once he's used, he can't hit or run for anyone else. It's a rule designed to get an extra player into the game, but it also speeds up the game overall, since there's no waiting for the catcher to put his gear on after getting stranded on base.

This is also a rule at the NAIA level, FWIW.

Why not just have 6 designated hitters and 8 fielders? No need to have a deeper lineup than 6 guys.

Looks like the tommy john trend continues this year with Zach Wheeler having a torn UCL

We call it a 'courtesy runner' here in Iowa. Only the pitcher and catcher are eligible to have a courtesy runner, though.

What other high levels of baseball other than the NL don't use a DH?
The Central League of the NPB doesn't have the DH. But your question is hardly relevant. Just because a bunch of people subscribe to a bad idea doesn't suddenly make the idea less bad. Friends jumping off a bridge and all.

Never knew this

» 1921 Another grandfather clause in the spitball rule: eight National League and nine American League pitchers are officially designated as spitball pitchers and allowed to use the spitter for the rest of their careers. [8.02]

Sometimes a question is an interrogative statement used to obtain knowledge. Nothing more. I don't have an agenda here. I didn't know the answer to the question so I asked a group I thought might know. So, thanks for the factual part of your response, and please get off my nuts.

Sometimes an answer is followed by additional information. Your nuts are safe.

Veteran infielder Rafael Furcal, who’s currently rehabbing a torn hamstring suffered while playing winter ball in theDominican Republic, has signed a minor-league deal with the Royals.
You can't make this stuff up.

Oh my.I hope Furcal has a 20-year-old nephew or neighbor who is an undrafted free agent shortstop with 70 speed and a 60 glove, and this is all part of a master plan to sign that kid before the Yankees find him.

The Reds have moved Tony Cingrani to the bullpen. He hasn't developed a starter's arsenal and has the power left arm to be an effective reliever.. The decision really leaves the Reds' rotation short until Homer Bailey returns. Even if Bailey makes it back in late April, one of Jason Marquis, Paul Maholm, David Holmberg or ex-Dodger Matt Magill will still have a job. The darkhorse is Cuban rookie Raisel Iglesias who has a big time opportunity in his first camp.

What's the Vegas win line on these guys?

77.5. They were 76-86 in 2014, underperforming their Pythagorean by 3 games.

Latos and Simon are gone but they were less than 3 WAR between them last year. Votto and Bruce should be more productive and Marlon Byrd is an upgrade in LF. I don't think the Reds will contend but that number seems achievable.

The NL Central is pretty stacked. If they get an injury or two (Votto, Bailey) and Bruce doesn't have a major bounce back they'll be pretty bad. I wouldn't expect Frazier to repeat his 2014 either.

St. Patrick's day special

Peter O'Brien came to the Diamondbacks with a questionable defensive reputation, but the throwing problems that have surfaced for him in recent days go beyond a catcher having difficulty controlling the running game.

During a "B" game on Thursday, there were at least four instances in which O'Brien couldn't return the ball accurately to his pitcher. The next day, during a Cactus League game in Goodyear, he threw wildly to pitcher Jeremy Hellickson once with runners on and had several other inaccurate throws between innings.

During Sunday's B game, there were more than a half-dozen throws that went wild tosses back to his pitcher that infielders needed to retrieve, balls that sailed over the third baseman's head after a bases-empty strikeout. That's not even counting a wild throw he made to third in the middle of a play, when he was rushing to nail a runner.

O'Brien and people with the team are downplaying the issues. O'Brien says he's trying to throw it back to the mound firmly and wants to keep the tempo of the game going. "It's part of the game," O'Brien said. "We throw the baseball so much. I've been working on it, getting it under control and making sure I keep the tempo of the game up and keep working from there."
O'Brien went to Arizona in exchange for Martin Prado. He hit 34 MiLB HRs last season.

Is Hector Olivera ever going to sign anywhere? I would think if any of these $50M offers were legit, a guy who's been living in Cuba all his life would jump at that kind of cash.

At this point, anyway he gets enough time in the Spring in to be there for opening day?

He could learn from Rube Baker.

According to reports, he's either ready to sign a contract for $77m and take the league by storm, or he's on his death-bed and will never play again. The truth is probably somewhere in between. Im hoping for the Braves, where he is most likely to play 2B and get steady AB's. If he goes to the dodgers, he will likely play 3B and hit towards the bottom of the lineup. Hard to say with Padres or Marlins.

I drafted him with the 235th pick of an inaugural dynasty draft, so I'm anxiously awaiting his signing. I just don't get the hold up... Wherever he goes is going to want to see his elbow so if that really is the hold-up, I guess why the secrecy?

Olivera recently changed agents and there have been reports that some teams want another medical examination. I own him a dynasty league too but I don't think his 2014 fantasy impact is a major factor in his decision.

Twins right-hander Tim Stauffer knows how it looks, that 15.00 earned-run average and that fastball sitting in the mid-80s.

Pitching for a new team for the first time after a dozen years in the San Diego Padres organization, Stauffer recognizes his new employer -- and especially the fan base -- want to see more, even at this early stage.

The good news is that Stauffer says he is completely healthy and that he has been through this before.

"I just feel a little sluggish out there," Stauffer said Tuesday. "Nothing hurts or anything. There's no pain. Just a little dead-arm funk right now."
Funky

I should hope not, because he didn't do a damn thing for me last year.

He was a top scorer in my viva la revolucion league and led me to the title. It sucks I had to share my winnings with everyone.

I cringe every time I see one of my players in the news. Of the stories Ive been following, the Cobb news sounds pretty bad. Sean Doolittle isn't even close to throwing yet, with a partial tear, I wouldnt count on him for anything at this point. The lack on info on Evan Gattis' wrist is worrisome. The Kris Bryant shoulder thing is worth monitoring. On the positive side, Drew Smyly seems to be recovering.

so annoying. My keepers were due on Sunday and I made my last keeper Cobb over Arrieta. 2 days later hes hurt and only way I can replace him with another keeper is if he is declared out for the season.

Clearly, you need to murder Alex Cobb.

Who cares about NFBC ADP in a keeper decision? Should keep the player YOU think is best for YOUR team. By April 15th all of that ADP talk will be long forgotten.

I'm assuming its keeping for this year only. He didn't mention otherwise.

He also mentioned ADP's being close, which is why I responded with that haha. Read slower.

And yes Cobb coming off 2 stellar years vs the guy coming off his 1st good year in 5 seasons and a career 4.5 era, I don't think its really close. That's 'me' I guess.

You're a peach. Never change.

To imply that Cobb has been "stellar" is to imply that he has turned in even one season of 30 starts in his MLB career. He's been pretty good when he has pitched, but he's still a mid-tier No. 2 at best for fantasy purposes.

FWIW, I think both of the guys in question are being overvalued in redrafts.
