Any updates on starting WR or RB who are going to do KR or PR

Also any starting IDP doing KR or PR

Right now all i know is Patterson and Harvin who are probably going to be doing KR
I'll have an article coming out soon that focuses on this.

Given the lack of kickoff returns, is think the dst with the best punt returners are more valuable.

Who are the most dangerous punt returners?

Given the lack of kickoff returns, is think the dst with the best punt returners are more valuable.

Who are the most dangerous punt returners?
Though the number of kickoff returns took a hit when they moved the kickoff to the 35, they are are still the dominant factor in return yardage over punts with about 3x the yards of punt returns. There are more kick returns than punt returns still, and they go for over twice as many yards on average.

The change went into place in 2011. Here's 3 years before and after worth of results. Average league results on a per game, per team basis from each year:

Year PRs PRYd Y/PR KR KRYd Y/KR2013 2.1 20.1 9.4 2.5 58.8 23.42012 2.2 21.6 9.7 2.7 64.2 23.62011 2.3 22.7 9.9 2.7 63.8 23.82010 2.2 21.5 9.6 4.0 88.7 22.32009 2.3 19.6 8.5 3.9 88.6 22.62008 2.1 19.7 9.3 4.1 94.2 22.8So last year, each game a team on average would gain 58.8 kick return yards and 20.1 punt return yards.

The number of touchdowns has swung in favor of punt returns since the change, but there are so few touchdowns of either type the yardage completely dominates them.

Article is finished and going through the steps to get it published to the site, so should be appearing soon.

Actual projections of course you can always get in the normal location or just have incorporated in your rankings in MyFBG, in Draft Dominator, or in the Mobile Apps by just setting your return scoring system.

Quick question. If you play in a D/ST only, and not an IDP league, where do you enter kick/punt return yards/scoring values in DD? I see there's columns to enter values for offensive players (not sure why other than WR's) and IDP's (DL/LB/DB), but the area you would put the values for just a D/ST is greyed out and will not allow input.

Any help much appreciated.

Hrm, I hadn't played with D/ST myself there, I'm always in IDP leagues. It's greyed out in mine as well. I do team projections as well as individual, but now I'm not sure if DD handles them yet. Let me try to get you an answer.

My leagues just get points through dst kickoff or punt returns for tds. Yards don't matter. So I'm trying to determine which defenses should get a bump based on potential return tds. The rams do for sure for example.

Thanks for all your work in this realm every year Greg!

I didn't put IDP in the article explicitly, though I believe the only returner who is already fantasy significant based on his defense alone would be Earl Thomas who is handling punts for Seattle.. And he does get discussed in the article when discussing Pete Carroll's views on using starters in regards to Percy Harvin's unceratinty.

Beyond Thomas, I think most guys left probably wouldn't be significant in non-return leagues. And for the guys who become significant based on the returns primarily, use the rankings from the projections as you really need to be looking for your specific scoring system.

Speaking of scoring system, I'm going to add a poll to see how common the different systems are.

Wes Welker has a concussion and while it could be he'll be back by week 1, the fact he's had several now could make this a long term thing. So drafting him just got a lot more uncertain, and even if he plays it might impact whether he returns punts. He was already wearing some special headgear and a mouth guard to try to help with concussions.

Isaiah Burse would be the guy likely to handle returns now, though I imagine the team will consider other options, as Burse isn't a sure thing to make the roster. If Welker is out, it could come down to Andre Caldwell or Cody Latimer seeing more playing time at WR. If they don't go with Burse on punt returns, they could try any number of other receivers or DBs, but Caldwell or Emmanuel Sanders would be guys we'd want to keep our eye on since they could add return yards on top of potential fantasy significance as receivers.

Some other news... Steven Miller was cut by Detroit. He was perhaps an outside shot at making the roster anyway, but he was given a chance at some returns in preseason.

Reports of Latavius Murray emerging as the kick returner in Oakland though the depth chart has him third behind Taiwan Jones and McFadden. Sometimes teams make their preseason depth chart just reflect the next preseason game. Other teams may set it once then don't touch it until final cuts are done. And it's tough to tell what a given team is doing in this regard, so it can be tough to tell what to go with.

The Bears cut Michael Ford, who was an option at kick returner. They had recently released Eric Weems and then signed Darius Reynaud. So Reynaud, Micheal Spurlock, Armanti Edwards and Chris Williams are probably the main candidates now. Looks like they updated their depth chart and have Spurlock on top for both return jobs.

Kealoha Pilares was cut by the Panthers. He was competing for the kick returner position. Philly Brown (formerly Corey Brown) and Fozzy Whittaker are probably the lead guys on kickoffs then, and Philly Brown the lead guy on punts.

Small thing to watch, Benny Cunningham started with the 1st string for the Rams because the team wanted to see what he could do with the 1st string, while they already know what Zac Stacy can do. I don't expect anything comes of it, but Cunningham figures into the kickoff returns for the Rams. If he did somehow end up the starting RB that could take away his returns.

Jacoby Ford was released by the Jets. He was competing for the kick return job. Though I'd think Jalen Saunders who probably will handle punts would stand to benefit eventually, the Jets have Saalim Hakim and Clyde Gates as the backup KR on their depth chart. I can't tell you much about Hakim other than that he's the brother of Az-Zahir Hakim from the Greatest Show on Turf Rams teams. He had a 32 yard kick return in their week 3 game but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Working on getting the updates to projections through the system for update into Draft Dominator and the apps, but wanted to post the news as I heard it for those with drafts going on.

Trindon Holliday hasn't practiced much this preseason for the Giants. I have always felt there was a fair possibility he might not make the roster and so have hedged his projections to account for it. Continuing to lower it as I think not practicing may not bode well for him when the team has some other good returners. Rueben Randle is listed as the backup and Jerrel Jernigan after him. Holliday is listed as the backup to Quintin Demps on kick returns. Preston Parker and Jernigan are listed after him.

Houston waived Joe Adams who was given a look as a returner but I didn't think he made much of an impression at least in the preseason games.

The Bucs cut Eric Page, who handled most of their returns last season. Also Skye Dawson who always gets mentioned as a possible returner on whatever team he is on. Solomon Patton is listed as the starter for both types of returns, with Bobby Rainey the backup on punts and Jeff Demps the backup on kickoffs.

The Colts jobs are even more up in the air than I'd thought. According to the media, Daniel Herron and Donte Moncrief are favorites at kick returner though Deji Karim is listed on their depth chart as the backup currently. Griff Whalen, T.Y. Hilton and Loucheiz Purifoy are getting reps at punt returner.

Micah Hyde and Randall Cobb both had punt returns in their 3rd preseason game, so apparently Mike McCarthy meant it when he said he was reconsidering using the best players to get a boost to his return game. DuJuan Harris may be the guy who handles kick returns though.

Eric Weems signed with the Falcons, and had a kick return in Atlanta's game this weekend.

Thigpen's return job in Miami still might be up in the air. Jarvis Landry or receiver Damian Williams are the guys competing for the job,. Williams had the better night against Dallas, with Landry fumbling on a punt return.

Mike Gillislee was stashed on IR by the Dolphins. Had already dropped him out of the returner projections as a potential backup.

David Reed was cut by the 49ers. Had him as a chance at getting some kick returns should anything happen to LaMichael James. The team depth chart doesn't show any backups, but Bruce Ellington is probably a good guess for at least one backup spot and maybe both. Perrish Cox also has returned some punts.

Is Weems depth behind Hester?

How do you guys feel about deanthony Thomas, with the Kansas City chiefs? I like Dave toub as a special teams coach, and I feel like Thomas may strive in returns for them this year

I would think so, though I am not sure if he will end up even a primary backup at either spot yet, if he makes the roster.

He's off to a great start, had a long punt return touchdown already in preseason.

I'm not sure if he is going to beat out Knile Davis and Albert Wilson on kickoff returns or not though, which is the bigger piece of return yardage. It wouldn't be a surprise to see all three getting touches if they all make the roster, which I would think Davis and Thomas will. Not sure how likely Wilson is to make it.

Greg Jenkins released by the Raiders. Travis Carrie and Denarius Moore were both ahead of him for the punt return job anyway.

Edit: Looks like it was actually Injured Reserve, not a release.

picked him up in my league where you start a pure KR. expectick things from him this year

Tandon Doss to IR. I thought he would end up taking over the Jaguars punt return job during the season if he had the chance.

Marc Mariani released by Tennessee. He was in a three-way race with Dexter McCluster and Leon Washington. McCluster probably gets most of the punt returns and I would think he'll hang onto the job. Washington probably is the main kick returner at least to start. Each is the other's backup.

Martin will return Texans' punts and kicksHOUSTON -- Texans coach Bill O'Brien didn't announce a backup quarterback Friday, but he did resolve one competition.

Keshawn Martin will be the Texans' kick and punt returner this season.

"He’s done a good job," O'Brien said. "... He’s a guy that’s one of the most improved players on our team. He’s got to continue to go that way. He came back in training camp, whether it was his return ability or his play on offense, he’s done a really good job of taking what we coached him in the spring ... and come here and improved a lot."

anyone have an updated list by any chance?

Final cut downs.

TJ Graham cut by Buffalo, and Sammy Watkins moves up to backup kick returner.

Asa Jackson is the backup in Baltimore.

Philly Brown landed both return jobs in Carolina though I'm not sure how long of a leash he has.

The Bears cut Chris Williams and Armanti Edwards, which probably leaves Darius Reynaud as the backup to Spurlock. They haven't updated their depth chart though so it's possible Reynaud could be the starter.

Dallas has J.J. Wilcox and Cole Beasley backing up Harris on kickoffs, and Beasley as the backup on punts.

Denver has Burse returning punts with Welker as his backup, and Andre Caldwell handling kickoffs with Omar Bolden the backup.

Lions haven't updated their depth chart, but it is likely they are sticking with Jeremy Ross for both return roles, and a pair of Golden Domers backing him up, Golden Tate on punts and Theo Riddick on kickoffs.

Packers similarly haven't updated their depth chart. Hyde is listed as the starter for both types of returns, with DuJuan Harris the main backup on kickoffs and Cobb as the backup on punts and 3rd string on kicks. I won't be surprised if Harris see's a lot of the returns though.

Loucheiz Purifoy appears to have made the Colts and is still showing on their depth chart as the primary returner. I had him with a lower percentage of returns as I wasn't sure if he'd survive the cut down. TY Hilton is not listed on the depth chart as a returner though it won't surprise me if he gets a few in big moments. Daniel Herron is listed as the kickoff returner.

Jacksonville cut Kerry Taylor who they had listed as a backup returner. No updates to their depth chart so it's likely the same remaining cast from last year. Blackmon and Sanders on punts and Todman and Robinson on kickoffs.

The Dolphins cut Thigpen, but I haven't seen word on who will handle the returns then. Jarvis Landry and Damian Williams (not to be confused with Damien Williams also of the Dolphins) are the main options.

Patriots cut Josh Boyce who was always an option on kick returns, though not listed on the depth chart.

Trindon Holliday was placed on Injured Reserve which leaves the punt return job up in the air. The team would like Beckham to be involved but he's not practiced a lot so it hasn't been in the works. For the short term I'd bet on Reuben Randle, but unless he excels I think Beckham may end up with a shot. Preston Parker had ball security issues in preseason. From comments from Tom Coughlin, it kind of gave the feeling Jerrel Jernigan wasn't really in the mix though that might be reading too much into it.

The Jets cut receiver Clyde Gates. They have not yet updated their depth chart as Gates is still on it, but at the moment Saalim Hakim, younger brother of Az-Zahir Hakim, is the only one left on the roster listed at kickoff returner. If Jalen Saunders gets some kickoff returns to go with punt returns he could be a value at returner.

Raiders cut Greg Little and George Atkinson. Travis Carrie looks like the punt returner and Taiwan Jones the kickoff returner. McFadden is a backup on kick returns, Denarius Moore on punt returns.

Eagles cut Damaris Johnson. Sproles and Jeff Maehl the punt returners, and kick returners are Nolan Carroll, Josh Huff and Sproles.

Chargers cut Javontee Herndon. Donald Brown is probably the kick returner then, but I'm not sure who his backup is going to be. Looks like Grice made the team but news about him as a returner died out. So any of the receivers who have done returns before are possible... Allen, Royal, etc.

The Rams cut Justin Veltung, and Pead is on IR which means their current depth chart at returner is pretty much Tavon Austin, Benny Cunningham, and some guys who are not going to be playing this season. I'm not sure who the backup punt returner will be, I'm not finding any info on the web. if anyone hears anything please post it.

The Bucs cut... everyone. Pretty much. Solomon Patton gone. Jeff Demps gone. Eric Page was already cut. Bobby Rainey and Mike James would be the remaining candidates, but I won't be surprised if they sign someone.

Washington cut Chris Thompson. Andre Roberts has both return jobs. DJax and Santana Moss are listed as his backups on punts, and DB Bashaud Breeland on kickoffs.

On the NYGiants website, it lists Rueben Randle as Punt Returner and Quintin Demps as Kickoff Returner. Demps is also their backup free safety, so that's a bonus for IDP leagues who also add return yards.

Spiller is listed as the #1 Kick Returner on the Bills official site. Is that true? ESPN still shows Goodwin but they are late on a lot of the guys.

I'm not sure how to interpret it. Like a lot of the returner stuff, we end up going off guesswork since there isn't a lot of hard info, and it's tough to tell how current or accurate a team is being with the depth chart.

Goodwin has been dealing with a hamstring and has carried a Questionable injury status, and Sammy Watkins is dealing with the ribs. So on one hand this could just be that due to their health, Spiller may be handling returns in the first game.

Or it could mean they just prefer Spiller there and are ok with the injury risk. I don't know that we'll find out for sure until Goodwin's injury status clears away and we see who they go with when both are healthy. We might find out more this week as injury status gets updated.

The returner projections are in the week 1 content already. An update for Buffalo should be showing up soon. Checking for a link where you guys can see the return projections. But right now if you have return scoring set up in your leagues, and use that as the scoring system to view projections or rankings with, the Dodds projections will include returner fantasy points.

I see nothing firm for Patterson other than the depth charts.

This is the most recent article that has a positive tone to it, that I found.

During the seven-game stretch in 2013 where Patterson averaged 42.5 snaps on offense, he was held out on kick returns for two games. Of the five games he returned kickoffs and played an integral role on offense, Patterson compiled 548 yards on 19 returns for a 29-yard average that still would've been good enough for third among all kick returners in the NFL last season.

The Vikings are trying to be proactive with a budding superstar, which is smart. But unless they can strike gold with another rookie returner in McKinnon, there should be little doubt that Patterson, who has played in all 28 games his college and NFL team have asked of him since 2012, can handle the few extra plays on his plate.

As Priefer has probably told the Vikings coaching staff: Don't overthink this, just give him the ball.

"I hope to not back him off at all," Priefer said. "That would be my plan but of course it's not just me. That's up to Coach Zimmer and how we use him on offense...To me it's the first play of the offensive series, that's the way I look at it."
I'll take a look at Slater, later, but hard to decipher the Emperor's plans.

On mobile so being brief. Zimmer said early in preseason he wanted to keep Patterson on returns. Have not seen any quotes since. My guess is he does the returns to start. An injury could cause cause Zimmer to reevaluate so it can change. John Fox and Mike McCarthy have both already gone a full 360 degrees just in preseason on this with Welker, Cobb and Hyde.

Patriots I tend to trust about punt returns, they have a history of using WR even when they are prominent on offense. But kick return was more of a guessing game last year as I did weekly projections. IIRC, it changed nearly every week for first half of season until they settled on Blount. But then it takes another 3 or 4 weeks to trust they are sticking with him.

thanks!

Thanks for that cheif, very helpful.

Giants moved Preston Parker ahead of Reuben Randle for punts on the depth chart.

Damaris Johnson is the backup for both return types in Houston.

Mike Brown moved ahead of Will Blackmon on punts in Jacksonville's depth chart.

Bears have Senorise Perry as the primary kick returner and Santonio Holmes as the backup punt returner behind Spurlock.

Dolphins have gone with Jarvis Landry for both types of returns. They are one of the teams who have generally used a single returner for all returns.

Bucs added Chris Owusu atop the depth chart at kick returner.

The 49ers have Bruce Ellington ahead of LaMichael James as both punt and kick returner. Which is a good point to reiterate just how much of a crap shoot it can be predicting returners and trusting the information the teams put out there. Harbaugh said last year that the depth charts are largely meaningless and the team's PR director (Bob Lange) fills out the team's depth chart and that "Nothing against Bob, I wouldn’t read too much into it.” That quote was last year, so not in reference to Ellington and James as returners specifically. But it points out that a lot of times the depth chart may not reflect the coach's reality.

I just kind of use my best judgment on what to believe. It's a mix of coach's quotes, depth charts, media reports, the track record for all of those, and a sprinkling of my own opinion if it looks like someone has earned more opportunities but there's no word from the team on it either way. Some teams are going to alternate returns and go with the hot hand. In the case of Ellington and James that's my best guess and for this week I'm pretty much splitting the returns evenly between them after having seen the depth chart change. Though I could see Ellington beating out James, I don't think it's something we should count on until we see some regular season games played.

The page with the Week 1 returner projections is up at: http://subscribers.footballguys.com/apps/weekly-return-projections.php

The URL will probably change over the weeks... so the best way to get to the current set is go to that Week's content list from the front page (top left, "Click Here for Week 1 Content") and then use the link on that page that should become available as the projections are available.

Of course the projections will be used automatically in your MyFBG content if you set up your league's return scoring system, and use Dodds projections as the basis.

oh, and I'm reminded that the pats signed former dolphin kr, marcus thigpen, to the ps just recently, ahead of the week 1 miami game.

so, there's that, although he obviously hasn't practiced with the unit.

By the way, since there isn't a last week to recap, the usual article is just going to be in the next day or so here, with just any late breaking changes.
