Steve Smith's agent says he's "not going to play for the Panthers next year."
"I know that," Smith's rep said. "I just don't know when that transaction is going to take place." By admitting the obvious, Smith's camp is putting the public onus on the Panthers to resolve the situation. The Panthers are trying to find a trade partner, but there aren't going to be any takers for a 35-year-old (in May) wideout who's due $7 million in 2014. It's time for both sides to move on.

Sources tell the Baltimore Sun that Steve Smith would have the Ravens near the top if his list if he gets cut by the Panthers.
The Sun had previously reported interest on the Ravens side. So we have what looks like a match here, and a very nice fit on the field as well. Smith is no longer a burner as he enters his age-35 season, but Joe Flacco desperately needs a playmaker after the catch and a reliable third-down option opposite Torrey Smith.

The Broncos are reportedly showing "huge interest" in free agent WR Brandon LaFell.
LaFell is in New England Wednesday visiting the Patriots. He couldn't take advantage of every-down single coverage in Carolina, but operating as the No. 3 receiver in Denver would be a whole other story. Even the stone-handed, blocking-minded LaFell would put up numbers.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent Jared Allen is threatening to retire if no team meets his contract demands.
As Sporting News' Ross Tucker quipped, "When your leverage is a 'won't play' media leak, it's fair to say your market is very disappointing." Per RapSheet, Allen "wants his market value, his fair salary," and "if he does not get it, Jared Allen is very much at peace." It's possible that threatening to retire will further sink Allen's market. Rapoport also reported Allen has a "ton of admiration for Barry Sanders," who retired at age 30. Allen turns 32 in April.

Signing free agents isn’t evil; stupidly signing undeserving ones is. At the combine last month, I asked Cardinals GM Steve Keim if all the stopgap deals he used last spring, Dansby’s in particular, were part of his team-building strategy, a way to fill needs while maintaining flexibility in the future. His answer made it sound simpler than that. For Arizona, free agency, like the draft, he explained, revolves around a board. A player is assigned a value, and if the market outpaces that value, that player falls off the board. The deals Arizona eventually made — for Dansby, Matt Shaughnessy, and John Abraham — lined up with its board. They were available for the right price.
Free agent Owen Daniels is visiting the Packers.
With Jermichael Finley likely moving on in free agency and Andrew Quarless possibly following him, the "depth" is missing from the Packers' tight end depth chart. Now 31, Daniels is in the twilight of his career, but would be a reliable chain mover for Aaron Rodgers if he could stay healthy. Daniels missed 11 games with a broken leg last season.

Giants re-signed MLB Jon Beason.
The Giants' 2013 in-season trade for Beason from Carolina was largely laughed at, but proved a smooth move by oft-savvy GM Jerry Reese. Beason stabilized the Giants' defense as an every-down Mike 'backer, finishing the season with 104 tackles and an interception across 11 starts. Beason remains a plus run defender at age 29, but struggles versus the pass. Still, this was a quality move by Reese to retain Beason, keeping him away from aggressive Denver.

Is Denver using the same salary cap as the rest of the league?Ware signs with Broncos for 3/30 and 20 mill guaranteed.
Across from Von Miller. Wow.
The NFC is tough, but they have to be the favorites in the AFC (which doesn't really discount what you just said).Give the Broncos some credit for taking their shot. Odds are still against them, but at least they're trying to jump through the window while it's open.
Just curious why you think the "odds are still against" the Broncos? Maybe still an underdog vs. Hawks/Niners but really don't see how they're not the favorite again in the AFC.Give the Broncos some credit for taking their shot. what a moron Allen isIan Rapaport was saying that Jared Allen was offered same deal Broncos gave Ware, but was made to wait by Denver.
If that is true, Allen may sit for a while, because I cannot imagine a 10 mill/year deal elsewhere.

They are? Where else should they have spent that money to make their pass rush better? Lamarr Woodley? Shaun Phillips? The Broncos are like that guy in your dynasty league who keeps trading away his future 1st round rookie picks for Frank Gore and Reggie Wayne.

Quarterback Josh McCown has signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.McCown will make $4.75 million in 2014-15 and $5.25 million in 2015-16, sources told Schefter. McCown's agent, Michael McCartney, confirmed the two-year deal.
McCown can also earn $5 million more in incentives -- $1 million each year for playing time and another $3 million for reaching the playoffs, sources told Schefter.
But are they? I'm really not trying to be combative just to prove a point.I didn't say it was bad. They're just putting all their chips in the "let's win the Super Bowl right now" basket.
Not a bad strategy when you're on the cusp and your QB is ancient.
Bucs agreed to terms with QB Josh McCown, formerly of the Bears, on a two-year, $10 million deal.
McCown is leaving quarterback whisperer Marc Trestman behind for a chance to compete for a starting job. New Bucs coach Lovie Smith has never been one for young players, and will likely give McCown every opportunity to unseat Mike Glennon. McCown's play as a 34-year-old journeyman was one of the best stories of the 2013 season, but a feat he's going to have major trouble repeating without Trestman's guiding hand. New Bucs OC Jeff Tedford is a quarterback guru in his own right, but has never coached at the NFL level. McCown is worth rooting for, but there's major bust potential here.

Sources tell the New York Daily News that the Jets have "real interest" in free agent WR James Jones.
No visit has been scheduled yet as the Jets are hosting Eric Decker Wednesday. If Decker gets away or proves too expensive, John Idzik could very well turn his attention to Jones. The ex-Packer will turn 30 years old later this month and was saddled with a drop-prone label early in his career, but would be a nice complement to one of the stud wideouts the Jets are sure to look at early in May's draft. He's certainly an upgrade on Jeremy Kerley, David Nelson and Stephen Hill.

The Charlotte Observer reports Oakland and Tampa Bay will be potential landing spots if/when Steve Smith is released, in addition to Baltimore.
We'd have to imagine Baltimore would be Smith's preference, though joining a veteran-laden Bucs squad that gets two shots a year at Carolina would likely have some appeal. The Raiders have no veteran talent at receiver, but would almost certainly have to overpay to lure Smith west. It wouldn't be a setup for either side.

I don't know. The way I see it, the guys is old and he might have lost a step, but he's also got more moves than a rookie. Knows the ins and outs better. Knows the tendencies of many linemen. Also, training camp and a full season are much harder on a 32 year old than a 22 year old. So he might think, "If I don't get X, I might just retire rather than submit to that abuse for one more year."Rotoworld:
