2014 NFL Free Agents (1 Viewer)

The MJD disrespect is ridiculous. He might not be a hall of famer but it's similar to the wrong response common around here when players get old. Not sure what it is-the love for the FF scoring and grrr that it will be gone?
I guess it's the age, but if he does well it won't be the first time someone was underrated after underperforming coming back from injury. On the other hand, if he lands with the Raiders, not great.
True. Look what happened to poor Rashad Jennings when he signed here.
Good point. I mean, McFadden could get hurt and MJD could have the backfield all to himself. It could happen.

Actually, the line must be getting better. There's also Murray, not sure where or if he would come in.

If they sign MJD, think he would be #2 to DMC, and Murray is JAG. Murray hasn't shown anything yet, the best thing one can say about him is we know nothing about him.

CSN Bay Area reports the Raiders are "very close" to a deal with free agent Maurice Jones-Drew.
Per reporter Scott Bair, "all signs" are pointing toward a deal. That was the expectation after MJD arrived in Oakland Thursday afternoon. If you ignore the fact that a 29-year-old running back is one of the last things a rebuilding team needs, MJD fills the Raiders' need for a competent bookend to fragile No. 1 Darren McFadden. Jones-Drew is on the downslope, but didn't embarrass himself in 2013. He did, however, average a career-worst 3.4 yards per carry.

Rotoworld:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Raiders are "expected to agree later today" on a three-year contract with free agent Maurice Jones-Drew.
Schefter cautions that a deal is "still not final," but this story has since been confirmed by CSN Bay Area's Scott Bair and NFL Network's Albert Breer. Although it'll be a "three-year" contract on the surface, the Raiders have been structuring deals to essentially make them one-year commitments. Jones-Drew turned 29 last weekend, and may not have three years left in the tank.

Steelers agreed to terms with RB LeGarrette Blount on a two-year contract.
Blount, 27, rushed 153 times for 772 yards (5.0 YPC) and seven touchdowns in New England last season, operating as the Patriots' lead back down the stretch. His departure is excellent news for Stevan Ridley's fantasy bounce-back chances in Foxboro. In Pittsburgh, Blount will serve as a battering-ram change-of-pace back behind Le'Veon Bell, but won't threaten Bell's workhorse status or firm place atop the depth chart. Blount will be no more than a 2014 fantasy handcuff. He doesn't play in the passing game and has a history of fumbling.

Pretty sure this is the most significant news to show the complete demise of MJD.
:lmao:

He must have nailed the off tackle reaction drill on his "visit".
Hey, if you don't think every team that MJD has visited hasn't had him run, then by all means believe that. A guy like Bart Scott doesn't go for a FA workout when the Jets show up at his doorstep at midnight, but MJD is being worked out at every location he has visited. Nobody is going to write the guy a multi million dollar check on MJD's word he can revert to his pre 2013 form.

Rotoworld:

Knowshon Moreno's one-year contract with the Dolphins has a base value of $3 million, including a $500,000 signing bonus.
It's a backup or committee back-type deal. Moreno's base salary is $1.975 million, with another $500,000 roster bonus, and $300,000 more in per-game roster bonuses. Moreno projects as a competitor for playing time, along with Lamar Miller. We also wouldn't be shocked if Miami drafted a tailback in May.

I'll give you credit, at least you're all in, even if you're dead wrong.

Maurice Jones-Drew said he picked the Raiders because they offered him an opportunity to "compete and play."
Darren McFadden may have the upper hand as the incumbent, but Jones-Drew has a real shot to open the season as the starter. With both Jones-Drew and McFadden's injury histories, is it also not out of the question that Latavius Murray gets a starting opportunity at some point in 2014. The Oakland backfield is shaping up to be a fantasy quagmire.

Rotoworld:

Maurice Jones-Drew's three-year contract with Oakland has a base value of $7.5 million with $1.2 million guaranteed.
The only guaranteed portion is Jones-Drew's 2014 base salary of $1.2 million. There was no signing bonus, and MJD could be released next offseason with no ramification on the Raiders' cap. It's telling that Jones-Drew couldn't do better than this on the market. Oakland now has him "locked up" through age 31.

I like Damian Williams. I would really like to see him sign somewhere he can get an amount of playing time he can count on. He's got sure hands and uses his body like a hoops player in the post. These qualities don't often stand out til a guy gets some time and even still there's usually a player with more excitement that gets the opportunity.

Catching the ball has become of less value than potentially going the distance.

That franchise is just weird. A few years ago they paid DeAngelo and Stewart and signed Tolbert to a decent contract but now they don't want to spend any money on the WR position. Just a strange franchise. I'm guessing they will be the team to sign Chris Johnson when he gets cut because they certainly need to spend more at RB.

Rotoworld:

Free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey will visit the Steelers on Wednesday.
It's Heyward-Bey's first-known visit after his career bottomed out with the Colts last season. Given an opportunity to start, DHB proved as stone handed as ever, catching only 29 passes while committing nine drops. He was one of the league's worst receivers before being relegated to special teams in December. DHB is an adequate blocker and special teamer, but the Steelers will be in major trouble if they're hoping he can contribute on offense.

Jets agreed to terms with WR/KR Jacoby Ford, formerly of the Raiders.
Former Raiders owner Al Davis made Ford the No. 108 overall pick of the 2010 draft after he ran a 4.28 40-yard dash, but Ford has proven to be amongst the most injury-prone players in the league. A would-be slot receiver, the 5-foot-9, 190-pound wideout has just 57 career catches, and missed 28 games over the past three seasons. Ford has as many lifetime lost fumbles (three) as receiving scores, and was barely utilized on returns in 2013. Still only 27 (in July), Ford is worth a flier, but is far from a guarantee to crack the 53-man roster.

Teams in need can find bargains in next phase of free agencyJason La Canfora

The second wave of NFL free agency passed in an instant. Did you miss it?

It's that group of visits veteran free agents take right after the league meetings -- which were last week in Orlando -- and include some bigger names getting lesser deals. In some cases there is still $2 million or so on the line, and not just all veteran-minimum contracts being offered around.

Well, that's mostly wrapped up by now as well, a week after the meetings broke.

It's real bargain shopping time in the NFL, with teams approaching it like they don't want to be caught peering into the window at the dollar store and unwilling to pull any big bills out of their wallet.

We are only three weeks into free agency, but, unlike baseball, where well-known free agents are often still signing significant contracts with new teams deep into free agency, the quality in the NFL tends to get hopped on right away, budgets get set and locked in rather quickly and times can quickly become tough for free agents.

Teams' focus has shifted deep into draft mode, and overall depth of this draft is doing no favors for older free agents. Thus free-agency turns into a slow bog now, and with the mini-run on running backs coming last week, there are few remaining headlines to be made in free agency, other than DeSean Jackson's sweepstakes after his release, the possibility of a Jimmy Graham grievance case this month and the possibility that perhaps someone still signs Browns center Alex Mack, sitting on the transition tag, to an offer sheet.

But there is still plenty of starting talent out there on the street, waiting for a suitor, and a handful of guys who will still get more than veteran minimum contracts as they play the waiting game.

In many cases those players are often still working to come back from late-season or after-the-season procedures, that by their very nature cause a delay about when they will be able to pass a physical and actually put pen to paper on a new contract. Many of them are still rehabbing and awaiting final clearance, and while they may be overlooked right now, they won't be forgotten by the teams still monitoring their progress.

TE Jermichael Finley: He has game-changing ability, a unique skill set and he did some pretty special stuff at times for the Packers, though he also undermined himself at times by things he said and with some of the inconsistencies in his game. But on his day he helps make an offense go and helps you win football games, and I still believe as I have all along that a short-term deal with the Seahawks makes all the sense in the world. He fits that offense, can give the Seahawks some dynamism at a position where they have lacked it and Seahawks GM John Schneider knows all about Finley from his time in the Green Bay organization.

Finley visited Seattle early in free agency and teams knew all along they would have to wait a little bit with Finley coming off serious neck surgery. Schneider is plenty patient and still has a budget to play around with and this is a need he could fill with a value signing and perhaps take away the need to draft a tight end high. I like the fit here, but as I noted there is no rush by either party given the health situation at play.

WR Danario Alexander: We've all seen the flashes. We've seen those plays where he pulls away from everyone and looks like the biggest guy on the field, using that 6-foot-5 frame to get open. And, well, we've all seen the litany of injuries that continues to dog him. There are no shortage of personnel guys who, the moment Alexander's name is brought up, start bemoaning the condition of his knees and wondering whether he could ever pass a physical. Alexander is doing what he has to do so often -- rehab from another major injury, this an ACL tear he suffered in August that negated his entire 2013 season. He went undrafted in 2010 primarily because he was trying to work back from knee surgery at that time.

Still, he is just 25 years old, he had seven touchdowns and 658 yards receiving in 10 games in 2012. I can't help but wonder whether a team like the Ravens, Panthers or Giants don't load up with pass catchers in the draft and take a flier on Alexander, which would hardly be the worst gamble in the world. Could be you only get half a season out of him and injuries occur again, but if he can provide a few explosive plays and help balance out an offense while he is healthy, I say give it a shot.

DT Johnny Jolly: Few players have as much off the field baggage, with his arrests and time away from football due to drug suspensions and the like. And he's no longer a spring chicken at age 31 and he plays such a physically demanding spot in the trenches and -- did I mention his indefinite suspension at one point and his six-year criminal sentence (and his eventual early release in May 2012 that came with a 10-year probation)? -- so, yeah, there is a lot to digest there.

Jolly also had neck surgery in January that still has Jolly getting close to being able to sign with a team, but that has naturally caused some delays in the process as well. Bottom line is few thought he might be able to play as well, again, as he did for the Packers in 2013, and given all he went through in Green Bay and the odds he overcame even to get back in the game, I still feel like there is enough sentimentality in Green Bay to get him back (especially given the lack of financial commitment it required to retain defensive lineman BJ Raji). But once fully healthy, I expect other teams to be sniffing around more heavily as well.

TE Owen Daniels: A year ago guys like Dallas Clark were still getting a shot late in the free-agent process and into training camp, and there are definitely options for Clark. Yes, Daniels is 31 and yes he played in only five games last season due to a broken leg, which is obviously a significant injury. So at this point, however, waiting until deep into camp and seeing if injuries or lack of development from youngsters results in an acute need for a potential playoff team. That might make plenty of sense. Daniels has strong ties to the Ravens' offensive coaching staff through their time together in Houston, but Baltimore isn't desperate at tight end with Dennis Pitta back in the fold. Might he help a team like the Giants? He visited Green Bay and could replace Jermichael Finley there. He caught 63 balls for over 700 yards and six touchdowns in 2013, and no doubt he could be an asset to a ballclub when the time is right.

C Brian de la Puente: A self-made player, de la Puente willed himself into a solid starter at center after having been undrafted and bouncing around the practice squad and waivers circuit. He has done multiple stints with the 49ers and Seahawks and reached a point, with the Saints, where he became a regular contributor. He's 28, so not over the hill yet, and since getting the opportunity to really play in 2011 when Olin Kreutz suddenly retired, he started all 16 games each of the past two seasons.

I can understand if the Saints want to upgrade or go in a different direction, but there is definitely a chance to start looming somewhere. The Colts, for one, have a need, and de la Puente visited the Redskins earlier in free agency. Maybe a return to the Saints, in the end, makes some sense as well. But he is certainly someone who I expect to have a team as soon as all sides can agree to the right fit.

DL Brett Keisel: The man still wants to play football, he is dedicated to playing and is in great shape. He has been through the wars in the AFC North playing some very physical football over the years and becoming the kind of teammate and leader everyone wants in their locker room. While many assumed he'd never leave the Steelers, he has, at least for now, and he brings so much with him beyond just an ability to all the dirty work and ugly things and help set the edge in a 3-4 scheme.

I'd take him on my team on a one-year deal for sure, and I can't help but wonder if a return to Pittsburgh is in the cards. Either way, he'd be welcome in any defensive line room and I'd be intrigued to see him in a rotation with Rex Ryan's young bucks with the Jets.

Steelers signed WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, formerly of the Colts, to a one-year contract.
Heyward-Bey, the former No. 7 overall pick of the Raiders, is a case of a player whose name is far bigger than his game. DHB started the first ten games of the season for the Colts in 2013 but was finally benched and played a total of 32 offensive snaps the final four games. He caught 29 passes for 309 yards and one score in 2013 but dropped nine passes. DHB will compete for a spot.

They really need that running firepower stacked on top of a QB who had nearly 30 rushing TDs in his first three years. :)

For the first time since he came out of college, I will be steadfastly refusing to draft this bum in 2014 under any circumstances, no matter how "compelling" a value he seems to represent.

In other words, he's going to go off for 80/1,200/10 this year. Fair warning.

According to NFL Network, free agent WR Nate Burleson will visit the Dolphins.
The Dolphins continue to poke around at the dregs of free agent receivers. If Brandon Gibson (knee) is healthy, Burleson would not be an upgrade in the slot. The 33-year-old (in August) managed just 39-461-1 in nine games for the Lions' pass-happy offense last season.

ESPN's John Clayton says it's still possible the Seahawks will re-sign free agent WR Sidney Rice.
Teams are taking their time with Rice as he comes off an October ACL tear. He'd at least be a fit on paper in Seattle as an outside receiver capable of helping to fill Golden Tate's shoes. The Jets and Saints have also been linked to the oft-injured 27-year-old.

Free agent Nate Burleson will visit the Browns on Saturday.
Burleson has met/is meeting with the Dolphins, but will head to Cleveland next. The Dolphins haven't been letting free-agent visitors get away without a deal this offseason, but Burleson can afford to take his time. The money should be roughly the same wherever he ends up. The Browns are looking for a slot receiver after Davone Bess tanked last season, but there's no guarantee Burleson would be an upgrade on in-house option Josh Cooper. Burleson appeared to have very little left in 2013.

Ravens agreed to terms with TE Owen Daniels, formerly of the Texans, on a one-year contract.
Daniels is reuniting with Ravens OC Gary Kubiak, who was his head coach his entire Texans career. Going on 32, Daniels has been in slow decline, but should be an excellent complement to Dennis Pitta in the middle of the field. Kubiak loves two-tight end sets, and Daniels has caught at least 54 passes in each of his past five healthy seasons. A broken leg limited him to just five games and 24 grabs in 2013, but he's now 100 percent. Daniels' days as a fantasy TE1 are long gone, but he'll be a reliable pair of hands for a team that lacked them last season. In theory, Daniels' history with Kubiak is a concern for Pitta, but Pitta will unquestionably open the year as the Ravens' starter.

Didn't they sign Hawkins?

Champ Bailey's agent confirms he's reached agreement on a two-year deal with the Saints, as @MikeTriplett reported.
This makes for an interesting backfield for NOLA. Lots of flexibility in match-up. If Champ can stay healthy, he's a solid addition. It still makes sense to me to get CB in the early rounds of the draft but it is not a R1 priority. I think C, DT and maybe WR are near the top of list now.

Evan Silva ‏@evansilva 1m

Free agent WRs left 1. Santonio Holmes 2. Sid Rice 3. Miles Austin 4. Damian Williams 5. Danario Alexander 6. Robert Meachem 7. Earl Bennett
still better than the Carolina depth chart.
Good point.

I think Carolina is a fun situation to watch and I really don't care who they draft, I am going to be looking there for value. Cam is a beast. Olsen can't catch 150 balls. They have nobody else. It's a situation where a guy like Miles Austin or Earl Bennett could really thrive. Imagine how the stock of Lee, Beckham or Benjamin would skyrocket if they went there. I'd have to take a look at about 1.05 if that happened. Their fantasy stock would skyrocket. Even a lesser player like Landry or Moncrief could see a big jump.

Texans agreed to terms with RB Andre Brown, formerly of the Giants, on a one-year contract.
The Texans have their Ben Tate replacement. Older than Tate and even more injury prone, Brown is not an upgrade behind Arian Foster, but was easily the second-best back left on the market behind Chris Johnson. Brown started the final eight games for the Giants last season, but averaged only 3.53 yards per carry. For his career, the 27-year-old Brown owns a 4.09 YPC. He gets what's blocked, but not much else. Brown will begin training camp as the clear No. 2 on the depth chart, but won't be miles ahead of Dennis Johnson and Jonathan Grimes.

Panthers signed Jason Avant, formerly of the Eagles, to a one-year deal.
Avant will pair with the newly acquired Jerricho Cotchery to form one of the most underwhelming starting wideout duos in the league. With every impact free agent wide receiver signed, the Panthers are simply looking for cheap veterans to complement the playmakers they will likely draft this May. Avant caught 38 passes for 447 yards and two touchdowns with the Eagles last season.

Vikings signed WR Lestar Jean, formerly of the Texans.
Jean (6-foot-3, 202) was a training camp and preseason star in 2011 before landing on injured reserve. He then caught six passes for 151 yards (25.2 YPR) and one score on 193 offensive snaps in 2012 before reeling in just four passes last season. Jean has been hyped before but it just doesn't appear to be there. He'll compete for a roster spot and perhaps contribute on special teams.

Bengals re-signed restricted free agent WR Dane Sanzenbacher to a one-year, $1.431 million contract.
Sanzenbacher was tendered at the lowest level. The former undrafted free agent out of Ohio State caught six passes for 61 yards in ten games last season. He has just seven grabs the past two seasons after reeling in 27 passes as a rookie for the Bears in 2011. Sanzenbacher will compete for a roster spot.

Holmes likely will wait until after draft to pick next teamPosted by Mike Florio on April 8, 2014, 7:40 PM EDT

Of all the receivers available in 2014, only one owns a Super Bowl MVP trophy. And he’s still not employed.

Per a league source, receiver Santonio Holmes likely will wait until after the draft to pick his next team. With a deep class of receivers in the draft, it makes sense to see where the needs are after needs are addressed via the seven-round selection process.

A first-round pick of the Steelers in 2006, Holmes was traded by Pittsburgh little more than a year after making a catch for the ages to deliver a victory in Super Bowl XLIII — and in the aftermath of a four-game suspension for violation of the substance-abuse policy.

Holmes spent four years with the Jets, but had lackluster numbers amid injury issues and attitude concerns.
