2014 NHL Offseason Thread - Free Agency Starts July 1st (1 Viewer)

The leafs talking about trading Kadri and offering 4+ million to keep Bolland. I hope this is all the usual Toronto speculation to sell papers and attract viewers but given Nonis/Carlyle's history, nothing would shock me.

I would let Bolland walk, trade Franson, buy out Gleason and from there you have about $15M in cap space to throw a bunch at a Stastny type. Similar to what Mirtle suggests here, though he has Franson on the books still http://www.capgeek.com/armchair-gm/roster/25406
After the last month of the season who wants Cody Franson? Guy was a pylon.
There's a reason he's the one I hope they move. That said, there is still a market for 6'5" defenceman coming off 30+ point, 20+ min/game seasons, he'll get a nice contract from someone.

The rumored asking price for Spezza seems too high. It's something I'd do if I really thought Spezza puts the Blues over the top, but I just don't see it.

Kinda surprised the Panthers went with Gerald Gallant over Disco Dan as the new HC.

I guess Disco now awaits the first coach to be fired next season.

Disco is making a pretty penny to do nothing for two more seasons, if they don't meet his contract demands why bother, especially for a team like Florida.

Yes I know he will get paid but I thought for sure he would get hired by some team before the season started.I guess the Pens making him wait to get fired set back that plan though.

Question about NTC's. A players waives his NTC and gets traded. Is the NTC gone forever or kick in again with new team? I can't find an answer anywhere, anyone know?

Scott Hartnell traded to Columbus for Umberger and a 4th round pick (in 2015)

What's that about? Hartnell's contract looks pretty good. Umberger seems a bit overpaid.

Umberger Traded To Flyers For HartnellPosted Jun 23, 2014 by Aaron Portzline | 0 comments
The Blue Jackets have traded forward R.J. Umberger and a fourth-round pick in 2015 to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for power forward Scott Hartnell, The Dispatch has learned.

The acquisition of Hartnell makes the Blue Jackets faster and more physical, and the trading of Umberger comes as a huge relief for Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen. Umberger had requested a trade at his end-of-season meeting with management following a late-season spat with coach Todd Richards over a series of healthy scratches.

Hartnell is signed through the 2018-19 season at $4.75 million per season. He also has a no-movement clause in his contract.

Umberger carried a $4.6 million cap hit through 2016-17. Earlier this month, he supplied the Blue Jackets with a list of 10 teams to which he would not approve a trade. The Flyers, where Umberger began his NHL career before a trade to Columbus in 2008-09, were clearly an approved destination.

The Blue Jackets will face Umberger -- and Hartnell will face the Flyers -- five times this coming season. The Flyers also boast former Blue Jackets Jake Voracek and goaltender Steve Mason.

More to follow.

Hartnell has 2 more years on his deal but it looks like their cap hits are almost identical. Seems like a disaster trade for the Flyers. With Giroux, Schenn, Courturier, LeCavalier up the middle, do they really need another C?

Closer to their dream of icing 18 centers every night. Don't know wtf is going on down there on South Broad St.

Umberger brings a little more speed and less penalties, doesn't fall down for no reason too. That's all I got.

strange that Portzline says in his post "The acquisition of Hartnell makes the Blue Jackets faster". I assumed that was a strength of Umberger.

Everybody wants speed!

They need to shut down operations on June 23rd. They go full stupid it seems on this day every year.

Richards, Carter, JvR and now Hartsy.

Thought it was a joke when I got a text saying it. It seems like their goal is to get rid of anyone that the fans really like. Surprised Giroux isn't wearing a Kings jersey yet.

Columbus re-signs McElhiney, which is significant only that there are more goalies than jobs, including backup jobs to go around this offseason.

Matt Greene reportedly about to sign an extension with the Kings. Good player and great fit there so makes sense.

Hey, any time you can trade a team leader for a guy who was a healthy scratch for Columbus several times, you have to do it. /Simmons

In 2011, 2012, and 2014.

I envision the alarm not going off last year like what happened to Jean-Paul Jean-Paul. "Why separate knob?! Why separate knob?!"

 Good one RUSF.

Dreger: Looks like Matt Greene is staying in LA. Work finishing up on a 4 year deal.

1:25pm - 23 Jun 14

Markov re-signs with Les Habs, reportedly 3 years @ 5.75 per.

It's now coming out that Hartnell had requested a trade. He had a full NTC so options were probably very limited. Takes a bit of the sting out of the return I guess.

Congrats to the 2014 HOF nominees:

Rob Blake

Dominic Hasek

Peter Forsberg

Mike Modano

Pat Burns

What's that about? Hartnell's contract looks pretty good. Umberger seems a bit overpaid.
Umberger is a step down offensively from Hartnell, but he is better defensively, can kill penalties and is more versatile with his position (can play wing or center). Plus, he gets about 100 minutes less in penalties a year so the Flyers won't be on the PK so much. IMO, a small step back this year for a big step forward in a few when Hartnell is playing out the last two years of his contract at 36/37 and has regressed to a 4th liner while Umberger will be off the books.

Agreed. I don't think it is great but certainly not that bad either. And if those last 2 years keep Cooter and Voracek on the team, then it might actually be worth it. Of course would have been nice to not take on Umberger's contract but Hartnell's contract is pretty bad. He didn't really fit with Berube's system and he looked a bit lost/slow in the playoffs.

Talk is that he requested the trade but they are trying to paint it as a winning thing. While I don't think the Flyers are necessarily built to win the cup, don't see the Blue Jackets as much better contenders. Also thinking that this opens up the wing for a younger player.

Still have no idea what they do with Vinny.

A couple of my buddies I've talked with who are huge Flyers fans seemed to be happy with the trade. I was surprised.

Just listened to his presser with CBJ. That rumor about him requesting a trade was total nonsense. Hextall approached his agent 4 or 5 days ago and asked him to waive his NTC, saying he wasn't a part the teams plans going forward.

Terrific class - it's like a mid '90s All-Star team plus an all-time great ref.

Hate to say it, but while Burns was a very good coach, he undoubtedly got the Kirby Puckett treatment of the highest honor after his tragic passing.

I agree, tremendous class. Only bummer is that I was out of college before any of them hit their primes, so things like this remind me of how old I really am.
