2014 NHL Offseason Thread - Free Agency Starts July 1st (1 Viewer)

So. before tomorrow night's draft and all the fun starting, I vote we all play fantasy GM for our favourite team. What would you do, if you were in charge???

Here's what I do with the Leafs.

Let Bolland walk, no chance I'm paying him 4+ million a season.

KEEP GARDINER AND KADRI. Gardiner is an RFA, rumour is he'll take a 2 yr/5 million dollar contract (ideally, I'm offering him 8/32 and daring him to turn it down, but I don't see that happening).

Buyout Tim Gleason. Admit that Liles for Gleason was an awful trade and move on. Leafs have used their amnesties, so it would be a typical buy out where he still counts a bit (but much less) on this year's cap.

Look at trading Franson. I don't need a huge return, I just don't think he will get paid more by someone else than I'm willing to offer.

Trade Reimer for best return you can get. (This wouldn't be my choice. I would keep him, but things between Reimer and Carlyle are toxic and being realistic in this scenario, going back in time and firing Carlyle isn't an option). Sign a backup cheap. The market is against goalies this offseason, there are way more goalies than open spots.

The above moves open up a fair bit of cap space. I throw 6.5/7 million at a 1st line centre (Stastny, maybe?). There is also money left over to add a mid range winger at 3-4 million and a 3-4 million dollar defenceman (hopefully get a borderline top 4 guy for that - Gilbert?).

In order to accommodate the salary cap, in addition to letting Bolland/Kulemin walk and buying out Gleason, you also need to fill the 4th line with low $$ guys -- but the Marlies (AHL) were strong and there are guys capable of playing a 4th line role, particularly Peter Holland, Jerry D'Amigo and Carter Ashton. a 4th line of these guys is light years ahead of last years McClement/Orr/McLaren.

Draft choice, pick 8 - I would love to see them get Nick Ritchie because I think his upside rivals the forwards who go 1/2 overall. Realistically, I think he'll be gone, so take a skilled guy (Ehlers? Nylander?) not a face puncher.

You can put together a roster like this http://www.capgeek.com/armchair-gm/roster/28814 (this one includes Franson, but you can also trade him, put TJ Brennan in his place, and allocate that money where needed for forward positions, depending on FA market). For those who don't want to click the link:

JVR-1st line C @ $6.5M-Winger @$4M

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel

Winger @ $2M-Kadri-Clarkson

D'Amigo-Holland-Ashton

Abbott

Gardiner-Phaneuf

Top 4 D @ $4Million-Rielly

Gunarsson-Franson

Brennan

Bernier

Backup @ $1Million

This roster comes in at 69,087,500, salary cap will be in the neighbourhood of $70 million

Again, I don't expect the Leafs to do this. I expect them to trade Gardiner or Kadri for peanuts, give Bolland 5 million and take a hard run at an awful player like Brooks Orpik... but this is what I would do.

As bad as Franson looked down the stretch, I am willing to see what happens.

Yes, let Bolland go.

Trade Phaneuf to Edm for whatever....Gagner?

Trade Reimer, and sign Hiller

bummer

The league, according to a Buffalo News source with knowledge of the situation, would like to:

1) Increase the number of selections determined by the lottery system.

2) Give all 14 non-playoff teams a more even chance of winning the first overall pick.
Of course this takes place next year. Can't have McDavid land in Buffalo. Bet on it now, no way Buffalo gets a top 2 pick.

Only if Pittsburgh threatens to move.

@JeffMarek 6m
I expect Nicholas Ritchie to be a big mover up tonight. Told the most interested teams who pick high tonight are Calgary and Florida.

First trade down:

Pagnotta: Deal is: VAN trades Kesler, 3rd RD pick to ANA for Bonino, Sbisa, 1st RD pick & 3rd RD pick

1:51pm - 27 Jun 14

:X

Bonino, 26 years old, 22-27-49 last season, 3 years left @ 1.9 mil/season

Sbisa, 24 years old, still an upside guy, 1 year left @ 2.2mil/season

Pick 24 will be a solid prospect,

Kesler, 29 years old, 25-18-43 last season, 2 years left @ 5mil/season

@coreypronman 8m
Sbisa is mostly meaningless in the deal. It's Bonino and the 24th for Kesler. Nick emerged as a 2L fwd, and is on a great deal for 3 yrs.

@coreypronman 5m
Even if Bonino is a 3L fwd (more likely), it's a cheap deal. Kesler's last 3 years haven't been elite either. Mostly fair deal, lean to ANA.

Kesler has been hurt or recovering from injury for much of the last 3 years.

ummmm,.... no Sbisa sucked. He never makes a play when you need it the most. Bonino developed big time last year. Don't think he'll get much better from here though.

He's 24 years old, a lot of big promising defencemen have broken out long after that. Even If all Bonino ever is, is a 3rd line centre making 1.9/season, Sbisa is only ever a bottom pairing guy, and if Kesler still is a strong 2nd line centre at $5 million per season, it's still not a bad deal for Vancouver.

Just called my son on the trade... "So we trade Bonino and a bag of chit for Kesler?" :lmao:

I really don't think he's smart enough to ever break out. He makes some real horrible decisions with the puck. Really never got better at all with the Ducks.

I like the Canucks side of this :oldunsure:
Yea it's not bad, probably used the wrong little face. After hearing some of the names a an was rumored to be asking for, seems a bit underwhelming.
:goodposting:

Basically everyone mentioned before was younger and had first line upside. Definitely underwhelming since we already had lots of cap space anyway.

Really hope they don't throw a tonne of money at a goalie like Miller or Hiller.

:shrug: Time will tell. Like I say, I like what the Canucks did here. Two decent pieces (in my opinion) with good contracts and a 1st round pick, for a malcontent who's play doesn't match his contract/reputation.

Duhatschek's take (he thinks it was even trade, as most "experts" seem to as well: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/vancouver-canucks-trade-ryan-kesler-to-anaheim/article19369772/#dashboard/follows/

Scary thing is you guys have plenty of bullets in the chamber to load up some more, could be an epic day for you Duck fans. :thumbup:

gets it

Sbisa might be 24 but he broke in with the Flyers when he was 18. He's played a good chunk of 5 different seasons.

His career arc basically plateaued with the lockout.

This discussion perfectly illustrates why you don't take Ekblad #1 overall. Defencemen take time. Sbisa was drafted a year before Hedman who was "a bust" according to many fans until this past season. He was drafted the same year as Bogosian, Del Zotto, Myers, Schenn, Gardiner and Teubert who are all still finding their way to varying degrees. To say he's never going to get better at 24 is completely insane.

#Canucks acquire 50th overall pick from Tampa Bay for Jason Garrison, the rights to Jeff Costello and Van's 7th round pick in 2015.

Bonino is not a top 6 guy
Kesler barely is these days...
:lmao:
He's not 2011 Kesler, and I'll say he never will be again.
???

He was one of USA's best player at Sochi. Bylsma had him on the #1 line with Kane. I have watched Kesler for 10 years now and when he's on he is a game changer. He does everything, PP, PK . He can play up and down the line up. 1st line wing, 2nd line center or he can play 3rd line and shut down roll. He basically made Toews disappear every time the Canucks played Hawks.

You're seriously going to say you think Kesler's play the last 3 years has matched his level of play in the 3 years before that? Come on. He's 29 and had two shoulder surgeries and a hip surgery. The style he plays means even when he is in the lineup, half the time he's playing hurt. He has been and can be a game changer but to say he has been that consistently the past three seasons is a stretch.

If Van doesn't trade up, they have cleared some cap space to be players in free agent market.

Great trade from them for a broken down ex-power forward.

I think Kesler is worth more than that and like the deal for the Ducks a lot. Bonino had a nice year but not sure I view him as a key building block. Plus Ducks have plenty of young talent already.

Kesler faded last year but he was playing big minutes leading up to the Olympics.

@mattsekeres 4m
NBC's Pierre McGuire says #Canucks might have cleared cap space to try & acquire #Sabres D Tyler Myers. $5.5M cap hit, 5 yrs remaining.
